And a good evening to you on this thursday night. We begin with the stunning and wonderful return to life of two americans infected with the deadly ebola virus. Tonight, declared cured. Leaving the hospital in georgia. And these two pictures say it all. Dr. Kent brantly, highfiving his medical team today. It was 20 days after this image. Brantly getting out of the ambulance and walking into that hospital. He and the medical workers, sealed in protective suits. And we are tackling questions of recovery and contagion with our dr. Richard besser. But first, abcs steve osunsami, who has been covering this story from day one, helps live the drama of this day. Reporter for a missionary who nearly died after contracting ebola, there was good reason, today, for the cheers and applause. Today is a miraculous day. I am thrilled to be alive. On wednesday, july 23rd, i woke up feeling under the weather. And then, my life took an unexpected turn as i was diagnosed with ebola virus disease. Reporter a nervous but healthylooking dr. Kent brantly stepped in front of cameras with his wife. And then, he hugged every member of his medical team, who had to work in productive suits and bubbles but werent at all worried today. After nearly three weeks here, the doctors say hes cured. And now, even immune to the virus now responsible for more than 1,300 deaths in west afafrica. God saved my life. A direct answer to thousands and thousands of prayers. Im incredibly thankful to all of those who were involved in my care, from the first day of my illness, all the way up to today. Reporter families were praying for both he and his coworker, nancy writebol, seen here working at his liberian field hospital. It took a rescue mission to fly them stateside when they were sick. And they both received an experimental drug. Writebol was discharged tuesday. There was ongoing testing and ongoing feedback from the results. So, i feel extremely confident that these patients pose no public threat whatsoever. Reporter nancy writebols son tells us he has no concern. His mom is doing better. She is doing well. Shes trying to get the strength back she had before getting the virus. Reporter the missionaries say the focus needs to remain on liberia. Police in riot gear have quarantined 50,000 people in a hardhit shantytown. Late today, we heard from the brantly familys church in ft. Worth, texas. They say dr. Brent live will be overwhelmed with the number o people who want to hug him. Diane . No doubt about that. Thanks so much, steve. We turn to abcs chief medical editor, dr. Rich besser. On the question of contagion. They tested but how are they sure its not contagious anymore . They would not have found any virus in the blood and in the urine. The one recommendation that Health Officials make is to use condoms for about three months after infection. They should be free in the Community Without spreading this disease. That is standard. And the whole news about immunity. Now, they are immune . That means they can go back and help their patients without risk . Theyre immune to this strain of ebola. Thats terrific news about providing care for people. People who have recovered can be caregivers. Is there a vaerdict on the experimental drug they were guinn . Im skeptical, given how fast they say it worked. They need to do a study to find out, does it help . Does it hurt . Does it make any difference . Before rushing to judgment that it was a miracle. Thank you so much, dr. Besser. What a day this has been. We move on to the other big story of this day. The hunt for the brutal killers that took the life of james foley. The three, mysterious figures believed to be behind the brutal killing. One of the men with what seemed to be a british accent. And now, the urgent worry about another american hostage and the details on the mission that failed. Abcs brian ross, with us tonight. Reporter with growing concern about the fate of a second u. S. Officials say the secret, nighttime mission was launched with several dozen special operations troops, fixedwing aircraft and helicopters with Surveillance Drones overhead. Some 15 i. S. I. S. Fighters were believed to be killed. And the United States will not relent on our efforts to bring our citizens home and their captors to justice. Reporter the u. S. Rescue mission was launched after it became clear that no negotiations were possible with the i. S. I. S. Group, which had commanded a ransom of 130 million for the release of james foley. Fbi didnt take it seriously. We didnt take it seriously. Reporter people involved in the process say i. S. I. S. Hostages from france and other European Countries held by i. S. I. S. Were set free after ransom payments of about 2 million each, paid in cash each, delivered by middlemen in turkey. Something the u. S. Has refused to consider. Isil has gotten in the millions of dollars from kidnapping of western citizens. And obviously we believe very strongly that we need to cut off their funding. Reporter as the fbi steps up its investigation, some former hostages identified the man with the knife as one of three british citizens the hostages nicknamed the beatles, who served as jailers, torturers and executioners for the islamic terror group. In a final, chilling email, sent to the parents of james foley and made public tonight, i. S. I. S. Said, you do not spare our weak, elderly, children or women, so we will not spare yours. Thats how jim foleys parents learned he would die. What will work to defeat a force as ruthless and implacable as i. S. I. S. . Martha raddatz is here. What are they talking about today . Well, theyre going to continue these air strikes. And they have really been pounding the i. S. I. S. Targets in iraq. Theyve pounded about 100 targets since these air strikes began. But they said today at the pentagon, they are sure i. S. I. S. Will regroup. And chuck hagel, the secretary of defense, had some really alarming language, calling i. S. I. S. , an imminent threat to every interest we have, whether its in iraq or anywhere else. What about that phrase, imminent threat . Does that mean a target here in the homeland, in the United States . I dont think he meant that. I think he meant the region. But eventually, they could threaten the homeland. I would not rule out air strikes in syria. In syria. Martha raddatz, brian ross, following this story every hour. Thank you so much. And good to have you with us in new york tonight. Reporter one bank executive, former countrywide ceo, angelo mozilo, is facing a federal lawsuit. But there were no charges against highlevel executives. Banks dont commit crimes. Bankers do. And we know not a single banker is being held accountable here. Reporter Justice DepartmentOfficials Say criminal charges could come. But six years after the collapse, many critics are skeptical. For the thousands of homeowners who lost everything, critics are blunt. Diane, they say somebody big needs to go to jail. Thank you, pierre thomas. We turn to a new sports headline tonight. Baseballs greatest hitter with an emotional plea for a new chance. 25 years ago, pete rose was banned for life, accused of betting on baseball. Now, hes saying, its finally time to forgive .
