Yeah a disturbing sense of danger virginia view. Heres what we know day two of the search operation is now over with. No major breakthroughs unfortunately. Dozens of ships and planes from at least four countries are helping to look for any sign of the missing jet and the search area expanding overnight now broken up into seven different zones. With the grim prediction today this jetliner and all on board are lost. This morning, a first full day of searching for airasia flight 8501 with an indonesiaen official saying they quote, currently suspect the plane is located on the ocean floor. Today the search area grew. Yesterday what was described as four sections today seven with more asset as riving. Indonesians joined by other countries and more on the way. It was just after 5 30 sunday morning that the nearly full airbus a320 jetliner took off from surabaya airport heading northwest to singapore but over the sea it encounters bad weather and the pilot saying he wants to turn to go around the weather and climb significantly from 32,000 feet to 38,000 feet. That is his last contact. Five minutes later, the jetliner disappears off indon radar screens. On board 162 mostly indonesians. This low cost carrier has been around for more than a decade. The pilot was experienced. This incident just nine months after the malaysian flight 370 disappeared over the indian ocean but there is a notable difference. If flight 8501 did go down it likely would have fallen into the java sea, a smaller area than the indian ocean and much shallower body of water. The prospects of finding the black box black boxes is very good. Its close to land there are a lot of ships that can be brought to bear on it and only 30day life in the battery i think they can find it within that time. Reporter you need to get close to the debris an earlier today an oil slick was spotted and debris. Theyll both be picked up and tested. There was word of pings but the indonesians have dispelled those and say theyre not connected. Singapore is the best equipped country and offered listening devices now accepted so those will be put in the water and listen for the pingers of the black boxes. A lot more work to be done. We dont know whats going to happen. Reporter more than 36 hours have passed since the last contact from the airasia flight since so many souls simply vanished over those storm tossed seas. A young woman expecting her fiance and five members of his family joining her for a vacation. He was supposed to be their la vacation before us got married. It was supposed to be his last vacation with his family. Reporter airasia officials, they were struggling with the horror of it too. The founder of the airline which has a good Safety Record tweeted this is my Worst Nightmare and he later pledged his support. A deep sense of depression here but well stay strong and we our First Priority is to look after the families and do whatever we can. Reporter those families they can only wait and pray. There were the lucky ones. 23 people were scheduled to be on this flight but missed it including a family of ten who arrived at the airport in indonesia too late and were saved. Steve, this is the second missing plane near malaysia. Many are duping it the pacific bermuda triangle. What do you think could have happened . Its it you have to say, amy. One of the things the biggest mystery is that the radar data itself showed that at 32,000 feet the aircraft just disappeared. So you would think that if the crew had lost control maybe as theyd come down it would have been some additional radar hits there to say, hey the aircraft is descending but it just disappeared at 32,000 feet. Very few things that could do that and it could be weather related but highly unlikely or a bomb but it doesnt make sense that it would disappear at 32,000 feet. Many are pointing to the Stormy Weather in the area. In fact the pilots last communication with the tower was asking to go above 32,000 feet. He was denied that request because of another aircraft. You dont believe weather was a factor. Why . I think weather will be a factor amy. I think at the end it may have been a contributing factor. Maybe it led to a loss of control, maybe it led to some other catastrophic event but i think everything is open. We have to keep every possibility open. We have to think about everything that could have happened to this jet and cant just focus on weather and that means finding the wreckage finding that black box, reading the tapes and figuring out what really happened. And it sounds as though the Recovery Efforts might be a little easier than what we saw wi370 because of the java sea, correct . Yes, just because its surrounded by land, its not the vast open ocean we know to the west of australia where theyre looking for the other missing airplane. Its also fairly shallow so if its shallower it will be easier to get listening devices and those things down into the water. Once we get a general area but certainly as david reported not encouraging that the box theyre looking in is expanding rather than contracting. You would hope theyd be narrowing that but thats not the case and we have another day and another day towards the end of the life of that battery so again, just like 370, the clock is ticking and weve got 28 days left to find that airplane. So far more than half of almost 500 people on board have been evacuated including this pregnant woman and her two small children.
