And with those killers still on the loose, tensions remain high. We believe that this was an isolated incident. But even given that, we are stepping up our security just to make sure that our students feel that they are in a safe environment. Im very concerned. Because if it can happen to him, it can happen to anybody else. You know . If the person who took his life wasnt scared to do it, they could do it to anybody. Reporter this murder will be the focus of a special campus wide meeting tomorrow. In fact, the school has canceled classes for one hour so that all students, fac cult faculty and staff can attend. At umes, derek val court, wjz Eyewitness News. Now, Maryland State Police are offering a 2,000 reward for information that helps lead to an arrest. A Johns Hopkins doctor is dead tonight, amid an investigation into disturbing behavior involving patients. Mary is live in the newsroom with the latest on the case. Reporter police were investigating 53yearold dr. Nikita levy, for secretly photographing patients with personal camera equipment. Dr. Levys body was found here in his Baltimore County home. It happened earlier today. He lived in a house, up this road in towson. The doctor, who is a gynecologist, was fired from the hospital earlier this month, after another employee alerted security to his actions. Wjz just received a statement from Johns Hopkins hospital. It reads in part, any invasion of patient privacy is intolerable. Dr. Levys behavior violates Johns Hopkins code of conduct and privacy policies and is against everything we stand for. It goes on to say that they are working closely with police in assisting them any way possible. Police say it appears levy committed suicide. Changes in leadership. There is a major shakeup in the Baltimore PoliceDepartment Training program. It follows a devastating incident. Wjz has been investigating where a trainee was shot in the head. Were staying on the story, live at the training academy. Investigator Mike Hellgren reports on the new training director. Mike . Reporter and denise, six people have already been suspended in connection with this. Tomorrow morning, the Police Commissioner will be here. He will address the recruits and also the training staff. And talk about safety as well as welcoming the new director of the Police Academy. The fallout is growing, after a Police Officer was shot in the head during a Training Exercise last week. Wjz investigations have already revealed procedures were not followed. And the exercise was not properly supervised. Now, the Police Commissioner has chosen a new director of training, major joseph smith. This is a decision the commissioner made. I support the commissioners work there. And his actions subsequent to the incident. Reporter major smiths past jobs included Police Academy commander, Firearms Training instructor, and internal affairs commander. Reporter major smith was valedictorian of his Police Academy class. Hes been with the department now more than 25 years. Reporter he has a tough job ahead, restoring confidence and performing a sweeping safety review. As part of our investigation, wjz has reported Training OfficerWilliam Scott kern was frustrated his trainee kept raising his head, when he should have remained hidden. So kern put his weapon up to a glass window and fired. He thought he was using ray fake weapon, with simulator bullets. Instead, it was his real service weapon. The key is to learn from your mistakes. There was a breakdown in communication bigtime. We all agree with that. It was a cloud over city hall and in the police department. Reporter the commissioner explained the shakeup in training leadership, saying, as we investigate the facts of this horrific tragedy, its imperative that we put our best leaders in front to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again. The trainee is still in the hospital right now. He has undergone several surgeries and was in Critical Condition at last check. President obama is facing criticism after a draft of his immigration plan is leaked. Republicans are accusing the president of playing politics for quietly putting together an immigration plan behind lawmakers backs. It would allow them to become permanent residents within eight years. However, the president s chief of staff says it is only a draft. The white house is hoping democrats and republicans can come up with their own plan that satisfies both sides. Baltimores most famous doctor is taking on president obama. Worldrenowned neurosurgeon, dr. Ben carson, is in the National Spotlight after speaking out against the president s policy, with the president just sitting feet away. Reporter i just spoke to dr. Ben carson on the phone. He said he is very surprised by all of the attention his speech is getting. Conservatives, like rush limbaugh, lining up behind this baltimore doctor. Reporter Johns Hopkins neurosurgeon, dr. Ben carson, highly critical of president obamas healthcare and economic policies during the National Prayer breakfast. Moral decay. Fiscal irresponsibility. Amazing speech. Move over president obama, the doctor is in the house. Reporter a wall street journal editorial even calls on carson to run for president. What do you think about the attention that dr. Carson is getting on this issue . Running for president requires more than making a good speech. Reporter dr. Lester spence, who specializes in black politics at Johns Hopkins has a theory about the republican embrace of dr. Carson. The real simple reading, i dont think its right, but the real simple reading is, like, wow, if we could find somebody black and intelligent that thinks like us, we can easily put ourselves back on the path to political success. Reporter carson tells abc news, hes unsure about a political future. As i always say in every part of my life, ill leave that up to god. Reporter i asked dr. Carson the same question. He said politically, he is an independent. But he has been approached about running as a republican in highprofile maryland races before. He has no plans at this time. Baltimore county police crack down on counterfeiters at a flea market in dundalk. Wjz is live. Monique griego has more on this growing problem. Monique . Reporter police say counterfeit items hurt the economy and consumers still some shoppers dont see a problem with it. Reporter saturday morning, Baltimore County police shut down all shopping at the flea market in dundalk. Detectivesdetectives served warrants search warrants on 16 vendors. I thought it was a waste of time, when they can be out catching real criminals. And nobody really cares. Reporter rita baycoat says most flea market shoppers know theyre buying knockoffs. But are only interested in finding a deal. Everybody dont have the money to buy the authentic paraphernalia that they got out of here. Especially for the teams. Reporter vendors are accused of selling everything from fake purses to Electronics Electronics and clothes. With bogus names like nike, apple and uggs. Its a huge industry. A multibilliondollar industry. Reporter last year, they raided the patapsco flea market in baltimore. They uncovered a massive counterfeiting ring with ties to new york city. Reporter Homeland Security says in recent years, counterfeiters have gotten so good, their items are making it into main stream marketplaces. And they can make it easy for them to pass off the price. Consumers cant even tell a legitimate product from a counterfeit product. And you know, the consumers are being duped. Reporter but legitimate vendors also say theyre being hurt. Because consumers no longer have trust in flea market products. Its a shame that everybody has to suffer for what some people do. But thats the american way. It happened on a flight from minneapolis earlier this month. Now, that man is facing federal charges. Jessica kartalija has the story. Reporter when jessica bennett, and her 2yearold adopted son jonah took their seats next to joseph hundley, their flight got off to a rocky flight. I said, oh, were sitting next to you. And he just basically rolled his eyes and growled at us. Reporter hundley allegedly began complaining that jonah was too big to sit on his mothers lap, becoming more outspoken as the flight continued. He was aflied annoyed with his comments. And he was turning my light back on after i would turn it off and constantly saying he was the staff in in regards to my son. So i took us out of the situation. And we stood back by the bathroom. Reporter jessica stood with jonah for 90 minutes when they returned for the landing. Jonah began to cry, and hundley became irate. He looked at me in a really hateful way. And he said, fing [ bleep ] reporter shocked, jessica questioned hundley. And i said, what did you say . Reporter hundley then pushed up against her face and repeated himself. When she pushed bag back, he slapped jonah across the face. Hundley is now charged with assault, punishable with up to a year in jail. And while jonah suffered only a minor scrape, his mother worries about longterm damage. He has suffered effects from this for sure. Reporter now, hundley was president of a division of agc aerospace and airplane parts manufacturer. The Company Issued a statementa calling his behavior offersive and said he is no longer employed there 32 days in a row. Gas prices are up at the pump. And drivers are certainly noticing. The National Average for a gallon of regular is now 3. 73. Its hitting wallets right in the middle of winter, when people are already looking at large home heating bills. Rising crude oil prices, production cuts and refinery closings are to blame. Heres a look at prices here in maryland, according to triple a, were paying an average of 3. 74. Thats up dramatically from 3. 39 just last month. Well, making baltimore a greener city one tree at a time. Mary joins us now with more on the new effort. Mary . Reporter and denise, a plan to bring more trees to federal hill is taking root with a pledge to plant dozens of trees. Everyone look at me. Ready . Reporter a ceremonial Tree Planting along light street in federal hill, the backdrop for a more concrete plan to bring more leeches and shade to this neighborhood. A green neighborhood is a beautiful neighborhood and thriving neighborhood. Reporter there are challenges to growing trees in the city, though. Most only live seven years because of wear, tear and neglect. But richard pollen, known as the tree guy, tells me a new partnership with the city and parks and people, federal hill will plant 30 new trees this spring and 15plus in the fall. They beautify the area. They give a place for wildlife to live. They help cool down buildings in the summer. They protect us from the sun. They help with irrigation. And they give us a sense of pride. They give us a sense of place to be among them. Reporter the new trees are being paid for through local and federal funds, along with donations. Denise . Thank you, mary. The nonprofit parks and people will help plant the trees. Well, we like to see green. Yes. Yes, we do. Trees in the city have a tough time with people walking all around the roots. Behind it, well get much colder air again for really wednesday, thursday. It will be sunny. 48 hours from now, well be back in the chilly air. But for tomorrow, another mild day across the region. Temperaturewise, above normal. To the west, shower activity pumping up across mississippi valley. Now its moving into the indiana ohio region. Thats going to move into our region. But it may get into western maryland early enough. After that, the cold air coming from across the great lakes. May still see snow shower activity tomorrow night. We do not expect any of that in the baltimore region. There is a rain to the west of us. Temperatures there in the 40s. Heres that warm front out to the west. Eventually, we get into milder air.
