A deadly gun battle. A massive manhunt ends in a lengthy shoot out with the suspect. Why arent officers ready to close the case on Christopher Dorner . Good afternoon. Im don scott. Im Jessica Kartalija. Heres what people are talking about today. Police in Southern California saying the manhunt for an excop who went on a weeklong killing spree is over. This noon, were being told it is the body of Christopher Dorner inside a burned out cabin the scene of a shoot out late yesterday. Heres the latest for wjz. Police have not yet confirmed that Christopher Dorner was the man they found inside a charred cabin. Now it will depend on the condition of the body thats recovered. It will depend on the forensics that are available and the laboratories that are available. The weeklong search for dorner ended with an intense shoot out at the cabin. Cbs reporter carter evans was in the middle of it. We are right in the center of the action here. We are right where this is happening. Then with a single gunshot the final confrontation was over. Police say the former Los Angeles Police officer and Navy Reservist took his own life as the cabin went up in flames. John miller headed up to lapds mayor crimes unit. He said theres much evidence to help investigators confirm that the remains are dorners. Because he has a military background and lapd background they have fingerprints and dna. After dorn er surfaced yesterday he was hiding out in an empty condo. Tourists and residents are relieved the manhunt is over. Dorner is suspected of shooting and killing four people and injuring at least two others since last week. He posted a manifesto online saying it was revenge for being fired by the lapd in 2008. Thousands of Police Officers were hunting for dorner trying to stop him from killing again. Even with all this taking place the lapd says it will continue to provide around the clock protection for the 50 families of officers targeted by dorner. Back here the Investigation Continues after a Police Trainee is shot in the head by an instructor. That trainee is now fighting for his life. Mike schuh has new reaction from the mayor this afternoon. Mike. Reporter well jessica that 40yearold had joined the university of maryland this summer. He was in an Academy Class with the city. That class was in an area of abandoned buildings when his instructor accidentally shot him in the head. Chopper 13 shows the University Officer as hes put in a helicopter after being shot in his forehead. It happened in a state owned former Mental Health facility. His instructor used a loaded gun. The mayor addressed the issue this morning. Theres no acceptable explanation for why live rounds were at a training exercise. I was almost speechless to think of Something Like this could happen. The victim was taken to shock trauma downtown. He is currently in the operating room with our chief of neuro trauma. He is stable. Any thoughts or pre dictions about long term neurologic outcome at this point are way way too early. What led to the shooting is unclear. Finding out how a live round made it into the chamber of the gun used by the instructor during training exercises is a top priority. Certainly our prayers and support are with our trainee and his family at the stuff time. The Police Commissioner left the hospital, pausing to be clear and exercise his power as the top cop. I immediately suspended all Police Academy operations and training through out the entire organization until we do an assessment and an evaluation for safety. The mayor promised the victims family the city will find answers. Her bottom line it shouldnt have happened. Reporter the commissioner has also suspended some stuff. A university of Maryland College park student shot and wounded in yesterdays murder suicide there is expected to recover. Ron matz is in the news room with more on what his family is saying today. The stepfather of 2 2yearold kneel oa says his stepson is making Good Progress and will return to school. 23yearold devon green a college park undergraduate student inside a home shot them. Green fatally shot himself then. Detectives say green suffered from a Mental Illness for at least a year. Some areas of the state could see the return of Winter Weather in the coming hours. Taking a live look outside where its been over cast all day. Things are expected to get worse in a few hours. Wjz is live with first warning weather coverage. Out of west look how much more there is. This is all the same storm system thats going to move through this evening when it changes over to snow and get out of here during the Early Morning hours. There are Winter Weather advisory in effect for western parts of the state starting at noon until 1 00 a. M. The very borderline event for us. Its 40 degrees right now. Across this entire map we are above freezing, thats why this is coming in the form of rain. Its going to take time for accumulation when it snows if it gets started. Now out to marty. Reporter no problems through the evening commute. However, if youre on the road at 6 00 you will see it mixing with wet snow. The roads are going to get sloppy, not problematic. Lets take a look at a graphic. Right along the Mason Dixon Line and cecil county and up the 95 corridor we could be looking at a 1 to 2 inch accumulation primarily on lawns and parked cars. The roads will get slushy. A coating to maybe an inch of slush. As bernadette said, this is a borderline event. You folks in cecil county, youre kind of main players in this when it comes to Winter Weather though. You may have a little bit more than accumulation some problems on your roads and around the 95 corridor moving into delaware. President obama traveled to North Carolina this morning to visit an auto parts factory. Hes focusing on creating more manufacturing jobs. After proposing a 1 billion to Manufacturing Research in his state of the union address. Our manufacturers have only had 500,000 jobs. He also wants to raise the minimum wage. Nothing im proposing tonight should increase our deficit by a single dime. It is not a bigger government we need, but a smarter government that sets priorities and invests in broad base growth. Republicans here on capitol hill are already rejecting many of the president s proposals. The gop says his plan would mean more Government Spending and tax increases. In california a terrifying drop through the air all caught on camera as the sky diver realizes hes in serious trouble seconds after he jumps out the plane. His parachute released too early sending him into a tail spin until he went unconscious. He survived but spent 2 weeks into the hospital. An faa investigation found the parachute was flawed and should never have been used. The 2013 Westminster Kennel Club dog show is over and theres a new top dog in town. Upper 40s in ocean city. Now, oakland is in the 30s so is cumberland. As we head through the afternoon the center of this stormer is going to pass south of us. Thats going to draw in colder air and change whats across the northern part of the state over no snow. Since weve been so warm and temperatures are way above freezing its not going to stick initially. Its trying to tap into colder air but theres not a huge source of cold air. For the most part the roads are just going to be wet this evening. As we head through the over night areas slushing is possible. This is not a huge storm for us. Heres the back edge of this storm. It will pull out of here tomorrow morning and sunshine returns and were right back up in the 40s. Our forecast comes together like this. Heres the storm system making its way through. We have a mix across the south, maybe the west. A slushing coating to an inch for most of us. 44 for our high today. Tonight down to 30 degrees. By tomorrow, sunshine is back out we are up to 48 degrees. As we head towards the weekend we have a new round of even colder air coming our way and again maybe the chance for a little be it of mixed rain and snow but not a huge storm system.
