Other Business Owners say the best defense is power in numbers, which is why they are working hard to police the neighborhood with their own eyes and ears. As a neighborhood, w if we see any suspicious, you know, activity, just definitely call the police or, you know, let somebody in the store know. Now, the manager at the common market, which is another local business right here in the south end, told me over the phone that over the past two months, they have had two overnight breakins. Caroline fountain is joining us live in fort mills to explain why. As you can tell, in back of me, traffic keeps getting worse. Property taxes keep going up. And construction is practically everywhere. And thats why county officials are looking to possibly pull the plug on new homes in the area. No matter where you look, in fort mill, construction seems to be happening everywhere. The cost of living is getting too high. Taxes are going up. Just need to chill out for a little bit. And all of that brings a lot of this. A lot more traffic, a lot more accidents. It is taking longer to get places. It used to take just a few minutes to get to the other side of town. Now it is taking almost half hour. To curb the growth, York City Council is considering freezing housing construction. To shut it down, i disagree with. But long time developer who also happens to be a state representative says that would i hate to see a freeze going in. I hate government dictating that. I think thats for the private sector, thats for the customer to decide. Norman adds saying no to new housing would also have a Chilling Effect on the economy. On a Single Family house, you affect over 200 different trades from carpenters, landscapers, architects, furniture, carpet. To put a freeze, you put a lot of people out of work. Now, the details on this potential housing freeze are still in the works. County staff are putting together a proposal that county officials will be potentially voting on april 1st. A mining developer that was practically run out of town appears to be back at it again. This after neighbors in harrisburg fought back against a proposed mine and won, so they thought. Now the company has come back with another plan. Robin is joining us live in the newsroom to tell us what has neighbors so upset. Hi, robin. Hi, kayla. The neighbors were worried that a rock quarry would ruin the air quality, do environmental damage, and destroy their are experiencing the same fears all over again. Its a pretty quiet town. And it is clear neighbors want it to stay that way. Theres already some industry on mulberry road in harrisburg but there are also a lot of houses nearby, and the kind of industry thats been planned in the past neighbors. I think were seeing two things. The first is we dont want to buy what youre selling. And the second is truthfully we may live in small town but were a lot smarter than you give us credit for this past fall an Engineering Company put together plans to site. People living here blasted the company for wanting to bring in explosives for the mining and also for their attempt to put an asphalt plant. The developer pulled the plans after the public outcry. But guess what . That same company is back at it again, now trying to rezone this same pasture land to industrial. It is very scary. Were right back to worrying can anybody be outside . Children, pets, elderly people . The planning director for the town of harrisburg says they would be willing to put a condition on the agreement that would not allow for mining or blasting, but the developer tells me he doesnt have plans to do that anyway. Develop an Industrial Park or, you know, basically to create jobs. Jerry says he wants to grade this land and prepare it for resale as an Industrial Park. He also wants to haul out the soil to offset the cost of grading. But neighbors think its a back door way to bring back mining. A lot of things can happen when were not looking, and that is what is scary for us. They will continue to fight, fearing an unwanted neighbor may move in. Now there will be a neighborhood meeting tomorrow night at 7 30. It is at the harrisburg town hall. The developer plans to meet with neighbors then to talk about the project. Live in the newsroom, robin thank you, robin. Tomorrow is just a neighborhood meeting. They would have to have a public hearing before any rezoning could or would be able to take place.
