Out to be a butcher knife. The University Goes on lock down. Its scary. It was really scary. We barricaded ourselves in our rooms like we were taught, turned off our lights. And just hunk erred down. Reporter the suspect was shot and killed. Our officer was on scene in less than a minute and ended this situation in less than a minute. And in those minutes, 11 people were injured from being cut or hit by the car. We have a team of reporters on and well begin with russ mitchell. Russ, what a day of confusion, tension and fear for those on campus. And parents here and home. Reporter good evening to you. I can tell you all is calm here in columbus at this hour on what is a rainy night at Ohio State University. I look behind me here. This is a complex where it all that lock down was ended, students were able to go out and about on campus as they pleased. Things got back to normal fairly quickly. Andrew breaks down what happened today and tells us more about the suspect. Reporter police say todays attacker 18 year old abdul artan used two weapons a car and a butcher knife. No evidence ever pointed to him students and faculty had been outside an Engineering Building due to a fire alarm when a car came barreling into the courtyard. This student was just feet away. He looked pretty determined. He exited the car pretty fast. At first i thought it was a freak accident, maybe he had a seizure or something. After he pulled out the knife, you notice its not just an accident. Reporter for nearly an hour nearly 60,000 students was on lock down as many students barricaded themselves and posted to social media. Artan was 18 years old, an osu student of somali origin, living in the u. S. As a permanent resident. Reporter earlier this semester, we can show you the campus newspaper here did a feature on him as part of the humans of ohio state series what was interesting about that is he talks about his heritage, switching from a Public University a Community College to come here. And by all reads, it seems like an optimistic young man who had high hopes for his future here at ohio state. What we may not know anytime soon is what his motive was. Although officials are not ruling out the possibility that this could be an act of terror. Apparently moved to dallas in 2014. At some point spent time in pakistan. His parents. Reporter his parents. Thanks a lot. As we heard, the 11 people injured were taken to several hospitals here. Youve probably heard various numbers throughout the day. 8 people injured, 9 people injured. We now know the number is 11. When this first happened, 8 people were taken to the hospital right aw hospital later. Several hospitals have been involved in this all day. One of them is wexner medical center. Thats why Jasmine Monroe is right now. Reporter some victims are still inside of the hospital as we speak. We now know it wasnt just students that were somehow targeted, but students and faculty as well. Day. Altogether, there were 11 victims. Some suffered injuries when they were hit by the car. There was one individual who was a faculty member. There were two individuals who were graduate students. Two of the individuals were undergrad students and two were grad students and i do not know the third person who arrived at grant. Reporter there could have been a lot more injuries there was amazing coordination and the speed at which these folks were able to come together. Think about what this incident, what it tragedy could have meant. Reporter some of those who are still inside the hospital or representatives of the hospital tell us they are inside. They spoke with their family members. Right now, Governor John Kasich added this has only made this campus stronger than they were before. Reporter i want to clarify something. When i said things turned to normal, i want to say that in fact classes were canceled today. Theyre scheduled to resume tomorrow. There are several vigils taking place tonight. More on that on channel 3 news jimmy, i know youre going to talk about this. As a parent, as someone who has had a child in college, you can only imagine how parents felt knowing their child was here. Well check back with you 11 00 tonight. Students were just back from thanksgiving break today and Manny Abraham talks to many of them to gauge what their that youre not as safe as you think you are. I never see a crime on this campus generally. Its a very safe campus. This is scary knowing that this is happening and i dont know whats going to happen next. I would never think this would happen at ohio state. Its just such a good school and i never thought something so bad would happen so close to me. As russ pointed out, while classes were canceled today, the campus itself did remain open. Almost all of the information that came out came through the universitys social media accounts including twitter. Thats also how people communicated with each other or expressed their feelings. What is he doing right now . And very luckily, i sent a text to him right away and he was able to text me back his location and what was happening with him. That was a very happy text to get. Laura found out about the situation at osu from a buckeye alert. She says it seems updates were co i minutes. As we said, an alert went out to all ohio state students immediately after the attack happened. Next at 7 00, were going to talk to an expert about its message and directions for students. Thats what Ohio State University told its students to do in the face of the violent attack on campus today. Would you know what tow do if you heard run, hide, fight . Matt shaffer joins us tonight. When you first get the information yourself, as just a person living up here, and you hear of a situation down at ohio state and youre in this kind of business, what goes through your mind . Right off the bat, you feel for the victims. Law enforcement responding to it. The tragedies that happen more and more nowadays, its enter into this kind of training. In simple form, run, hide, fight is a platform Homeland Security put together. If you can avoid the situation, run from it. Be a good witness, avoid the conflict. If you cant get away from it, you hide or shelter in. You saw some of the footage where they were barricaded in the room. Hiding out of the shr view, hiding under cover, something that will stop bullets. And the last resort, if you cant get away and you have no place to hide, fight. What about that aspect. Thats the last resort as you said. What would be your recommendations to presented with that situation, the running hasnt worked, the hiding hasnt worked, its time to fight. All of this starts with preplanning. Its talked about all the time on campus. Of your surroundings, knowing where your exits are. Im a very big fan of mace products. For the fact that its allowed on college campuses. Its a less lethal alternative. Were talking about your lifes at stake. Can you imagine that over the weekend, that campus down in columbus was the epicenter of the United States over the weekend with a massive football game, over a hundred thousand at thousands outside of the stadium. And what could have happened if this arose then. Absolutely. The Quick Response by Law Enforcement today the officers actions within a minute is absolutely fantastic. A hero to say the least. If you are a parent getting ready to send your kids off to college, do you include run them on your way . You have to. Is there any other thing you can advise people. You can put those three words in your mind, but you dont know how youre going to react as far as keeping your accommodate. The only way is to train on it.
