Some of the owners couldnt remember whether or not they locked their doors. Its highly like likely that they were unlocked. Reporter police say it started on chapel street. There was a fire inside a car and it was put out by police. About two hours later, they responded to melbourne street, where a vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. Police received seven more calls in the morning and afternoon, throughout the city. Investigators believe theyre all connected. Out. There are a few downtown. There was a handful on what we consider our south end. They venture out towards the center of the city. Reporter that lack of a particular location makes it difficult for police. Were ramping up our patrols. Its certainly difficult to do pinpointed area of concern. But were doing what we can. Reporter police ask the public to call them if they see any suspicious activity or people. Authorities dont believe there was forced entry on any of the cars. They encourage people to lock their doors. This is a crime of opportunity for the most part. The people that are doing this, theyre going up to the cars. If the car doors are unlocked, its a target. If theyre locked, theyre moving on to the next car. So we urge people to lock your doors, in your vehicles, your garages, your sheds, houses. Reporter in the end, cars were vandalized on eight streets in the city. And if you noticed that someone went through your car, you are asked to call police. Reporting live in portsmouth, mike cronin, news 9. It looks like january. Usually the coldest month of the year will end on a mild note. Temperatures above freezing. Thawing out the big lakes. The warmth will stick around. It does look like thats and were going to get reinforcements coming in. Much milder air surging our way tomorrow and also on monday. Look at the temperatures now. 37 degrees in concord. 34 in laconia. 31, plymouth. We are below freezing in whitefield and the greet north woods as well. There have been a couple of light snow showers this evening. Even some of these snow showers you see in southern New Hampshire havent been hitting the ground. So if you are out and about this evening, or even early tomorrow morning, you may notice a couple of light flakes. Especially when you get out portsmouth. Its so warm there, there might even be a few raindrops. For the most part, this is just going to pass by and some of ground. Tomorrow, temperatures warm up in a big way. Look at that close to 50 in nashua, salem and many of us will hit 50 degrees as we head into the workweek. Ill show you the full forecast, ahead. In commitment 2016, most president ial candidates are in iowa today, campaigning ahead of the Iowa Caucuses on monday. Our political director, josh mcelveen, is in iowa. He explains how the caucus works and what we can expect. Reporter after months of campaigning, the results will start coming in very soon, as in less than two days, iowans will begin their caucuses and the campaigns will move on to New Hampshire, each hoping to have the wind at their backs. What is a caucus anyway . All this is gibber jabber, if reporter while the candidates were using their remaining hours state tossup. Reporter we figured wed bring our question straight to iowans themselves. What is a caucus . A caucus is where you go to. What is a caucus . Um. A caucus is a gathering of neighbors. Basically, youre all in a room. A caucus, they get together at night and have delegates speak on behalf of all the candidates. Its a little bit more of an engaged counties. They go to a big room and people say, im for hillary, im for somebody else. Reporter and for democrats, its a big more complicated than it is for republicans. You have to have 15 of the people there. If you dont, those people have to align themselves until the everybody is in a group thats at least 15 . Yeah, its fun. Is it more fun than the primary . Yeah, because a primary, you just go vote, then youre done. But here you get to talk to your neighbors. Reporter fair enough. But do candidates themselves know the difference . They cant lecture me about this issue. Reporter marco rubio does. A caucus is a bunch of people show up in one place for an hour. They go in, hear different speeches from different candidates. Then they write down a name. And those are counted. The following people that come behind that. Its a unique process to iowa. Its obviously an important part of it. Reporter the outcome can still be very valuable, as the candidates who spend time in this state are hoping for a little cornfield ethanol bump head nothing the primary. In des moines, iowa, josh mcelveen, news 9. Thanks so much. Josh will have much more tomorrow and on monday. Most hopefuls are in iowa. Today, john kasich stumped into the Granite State. He held town halls today. Today, the New York Times endorsed the Ohio Governor for the republican primary. When you get the endorsement like that, that means youre starting to develop wide appeal. And we have to win the election before we can govern with conservative principles. So im thrilled by it. Between now and tuesday, kasich has eight more town hall New Hampshire. Are kicking into high gear. Today, boston mayor marty walsh made a stop in manchester at the montessori school. He told the crowd that Hillary Clinton will improve the lives of middle class families. Thats what the democrat says Granite Staters should vote for her on february 9. Hillary is the most qualified person, number one. Number two, its also about this is a primary and the primary gets you ready for the final. When you look at the final, if youre a strong democrat and youre thinking of signing, if youre stuck here, you want to make sure you vote for somebody you believe in and who can win. And Hillary Clinton can win. Several grassroots events are scheduled for tomorrow as well. And today, former g. O. P. Hopeful George Pataki hit the campaign trail, campaigning for senator marco rubio. The former governor comes to the Granite State after endorsing rubio. He also joined canvassers and nobd on doors for knocked on doors for the florida senator. Time for candidates to focus on politics. But that often doesnt leave time to learn about the candidates themselves. With that in mind, wmur held candidate cafe s, a chance for undecided voters to get to know the person behind the platform. What do you do to relax . Good question. Weve got seven beautiful grandchildren. They are the joy of my life. And theres a little guy. Theres no stopping him. Kid never stops. So we were in an event. We had all the media there. And so somebody from television goes, why would your grandfather be a good president . Four years old. He says, well, he teaches me how to play baseball. [laughter] thats a good reason join us tomorrow at 1 00, in the afternoon, for an encore presentation of candidate cafe right here on wmur.
