We begin this saturday night with every beachgoers worst fear turning very real on this fourth of july holiday weekend. A young man bitten by a great white shark while swimming off the shores of california. Lifeguards rushing to his rescue as authorities scrambled to clear swimmers out of harms way, and left behind in the aftermath, a chilling reminder of the dangers in those waters right off the coast of Manhattan Beach. Abcs nick watt is there with the latest. Reporter 9 30 a. M. And a fisherman here on Manhattan Beach pier hooked a monster. A young great white shark. Eight feet long. The fisherman fought for 30, 40 minutes until a group of Long Distance swimmers unwittingly swam right into this battle of man versus shark. Oh, look at him, right reporter and the shark attacked. He got bit. Oh, he got bit. Reporter eric martin saw the injured swimmer brought ashore on this bloody surfboard. His hand came up and around, got the line caught in his hand, brought the shark close to him, right here and theres the story. Reporter the man was rushed to the hospital, bleeding but conscious. Swimmers were ordered out of the water. Hey get out of the water shark get out of the water shark reporter a scene eerily reminiscent of the film that felt our fear mrs. Than anything. Jaws. Also set, yep, july 4th weekend. Sightings of juvenile great whites here are becoming increasingly common. Regularly filmed by paddle borders. No one knows for sure while theyre here. Maybe the warm water, plentiful fish, the birthing grounds are here offshore perhaps. But one thing is for certain. We are known to have baby great white capital of the world. Right here. And as long as people behave themselves, you know, the shark reporter it should be fine. It should be fine. Reporter this on the second reported instance of a juvenile great white attacking a human. The shark was mad, it was fighting for its life. It had a hook in its mouth and the swimmer was in the worst possible place at the worst possible time. My goodness. And it sounds like that swimmer tonight is lucky to be alive. Reporter he is. It could have been worse. Now, this shark, believe it or not, great whites have baby teeth and this shark was young enough to have baby teeth. Latest we hear from the hospital, the swimmer is in fair condition. Glad it was a baby. We wish him a speedy recovery. Nick, thank you. And this is just the latest in a string of great white shark attacks and sightings on both coasts. If it seems like weve been seeing more and more of them, you are right. The great white population is by many accounts on the rise. Heres abcs mike boettcher. Reporter spinetingling images just last week of a great white shark. This time, off of cape cod, massachusetts. A 12footer dubbed ping by researchers stalking the waters off the poplar vacation destination. That is a huge white shark, dude. Reporter days earlier, tuna fishermen spotting another great white. This one, 18 feet, just a few miles away. Got the chum bag reporter watch this great white tear into the bait bag on the side of a boat off the coast of new jersey last month. If it seems like youre seeing much more of this lately, you are. Since 1997, the white shark population has increased by an estimated 42 . The great white, which can reach 21 feet long and weigh 3 1 2 tons, also occurring in larger numbers on the west coast, according to one study. This one spotted under paddleborders here in southern california. Scientists crediting the resurgence to a federal ban on hunting great whites. And conservationist efforts to change their image. And its not just great whites. A shark swarm closed alabama beaches last month. And a bull shark bite put a scare on bathers in florida, the countrys shark bite capital. The whole world needs sharks to keep our oceans healthy. Reporter great whites are typically found along coastlines than offshore. Beachgoers we spoke to here are keeping a wary eye out to sea, due to the more recent sightings. Rebecca . A smart move. Abcs mike beoettcher, thank yo. Meantime, up and down the east coast, millions are cleaning up in the aftermath of hurricane arthur, which brought heavy rains and flooding to new england. This car sitting on a flooded highway in new bedford, massachusetts. And in nags head, north carolina, near where arthur first made landfall late thursday, this man trying to cross a highway thats been turned into a river. Arthur is now a posttropical storm and moving off the coast, and were tracking its latest movements, but first, abcs alex perez on the new threat to beachgoers this holiday weekend. Reporter tonight, the cleanup is just beginning. In new bedford, massachusetts, arthur inundating entire neighborhoods with water, dumping up to eight inches of rain. Most of it in just six hours. Many here salvaging what they can after the storm left basements under water. Water was right up to here. Reporter flooded streets stranding drivers. Look at it, past the curb. Water is unbelievable here. Reporter arthur, now a posttropical cyclone, today whipped through maine and canada. In north carolina, the storm spawned a tornado with 100mileanhour winds that tore through homes. This man raced with his kids to seek shelter in their bathroom. The ceiling was collapsing behind us. Reporter arthur tossing these travel trailers and boats like toys. With crowds now packing beaches, the storm creating another big concern dangerous rip tides. A maryland surfer and three life guards trying to help, all had to be rescued after they got caught in the current friday. Rip currents can form when strong waves break at the shore as the water moves back to sea, taking swimmers with it. Experts say, in a rip current, its best to swim parallel to the shore. And experts say, remember, you should never try to swim against a rip current. It could tire you out and possibly make matters worse. The key, again, they say, is to swim parallel to the shore and, of course, remain calm and try not to panic. Rebecca . Good advice. Alex perez, thank you. We turn now to Jason Nicholas of our cleveland affiliate, wews. Hes been tracking the storm. Nice to have you with us tonight. And arthur looks like the worst of it is behind us. No doubt about it. In fact, arthur is moving out, away from the u. S. Very quickly. In fact, as it moves out, colder waters will really weaken it. Behind arthur, though, interesting. Cooler weather, drier weather. In fact, baltimore set a record low this morning. 55 degrees. Severe weather out to the west. Still this evening from bismarck to duluth, across northern minnesota. The chances there for large hail, strong winds, even a brief tornado. Tomorrow, the issue is for the bigger cities south and east. Green bay, milwaukee, chicago. The chances there, hail, winds. And also the potential, because of saturated grounds, for flash flooding. Meantime, the problem out west is not enough rain. Firefighters in california are having trouble keeping on top of at least eight wildfires, including this fire just outside San Francisco that destroyed eight homes and damaged three others. Jason, when are firefighters going to catch a break . Yeah, unfortunately, no real relief in sight. Take a look here. The heat expands, especially out into california. Going to stay dry and breezy. Now, there will be some rain across the four corners. We do have fires in those states. But sometimes with the monsoon rains, we just get the lightning, and that could actually lead to more wildfires without the rain. Jason nicholas of our cleveland affiliate, thank you. And turning now to a tragic story out of philadelphia. A house fire that killed four Young Children and charred an entire row of homes. Some 42 people have been left homeless. The cause of the fire is still under investigation as an entire neighborhood comes together tonight, Holding Hands in a show of prayer and solidarity. And overseas tonight, are at a flash point in the middle east since the abduction and murder of three israeli teens last month. More palestinian rockets are being fired into israel and now, the controversy erupts over the baegt baegt beating of a 15yearold florida boy who his parents say was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Abcs Alex Marquardt is in jerusalem tonight with a report that we must warn is contains some graphic images. Reporter a ruthless beating, as one israeli policeman sits on the teen, another repeatedly stomps and then punches the boys head. Even when he hangs motionless, another kick. This, his family says, is the victim. 15yearold tariq abu khdeir, born and raised in tampa, florida. This is what he looks like now. Today, we met tariqs parents, in jerusalem visiting family. The palestinians live like this every day. They kind of say, okay, well deal with it. But us, as americans, its just its not human. Reporter it was tariqs cousin, 16yearold muhammad, who was killed on wednesday, his wildly believed to have been set on fire and killed by israelis, who were looking for revenge for the murders of three jewish teenagers. Israeli police today told abc news tariq was in the clashes that followed, masked and attacking the police. Today, they called this clip edited and biased. Tariqs parents say he wasnt involved, just enjoying the summer, hanging without cousins and friends. He was just having a great time. Reporter and they knew him as the american kid . Yeah, they knew him as the american boy. Reporter tonight, tariq is being held without charges before his hearing tomorrow in front of an israeli judge. Just a short time ago, washington said it was profoundly troubled by these reports of his beating. The state department calling for a speedy investigation and for calm. Rebecca . Monica lewinsky is breaking her silence in her first televised interview in a decade, with some never before revealed details. Heres abcs Ron Claiborne. Reporter in the new documentary, Monica Lewinsky speaks out for the first time in more than a decade about the scandal that rocked the Clinton Presidency and her life. She recalls being grilled by fbi agents in a washington, d. C. Hotel room. I dont even know how to accurately describe the shock and the trauma and the fear. Reporter president clinton would survive impeachment. Now 15 years later, Hillary Clinton considering her own run for the white house. In her interview with diane sawyer last month, she was asked about lewinsky. She has said she has lived all of these years as a punch line. Is there anything you would say to her about her life . Well, i would wish her well. I hope that she is able to, you know, think about her future and construct a life that she finds meaning and satisfaction in. This time, it was a huge inflatable slide caught by a dust devil, torn loose and flying some 30 stories into the air over a fourth of July Celebration in nevada. At least two people were hospitalized from injuries they suffered from falling debris. And to another frightening sight. This one in montana. A Freight Train derailment in western montana, spilling the bodies of boeing 737s into the clark fork river. Crews worked throughout the day today, trying to recover all the airplane parts. Okay, well, we need to deviate. All right, do what you need to do, sir. Reporter that pilot on delta flight 2443 on approach from salt lake city, taking evasive action. Rapidly descending after the singapore flight came too close. Singapore, you are not authorized to climb. Youre probably going to have to call back to the facility now. I know. Reporter it happened two nights ago. The second near miss in the last six weeks at bush intercontinental airport. In may, two united jets nearly collided while both were taking off. The faa is still investigating, but says the pilot of the singapore jet did not level off as required. Came kind of close, shook everybody up here. Reporter one official familiar with the investigation tells abc news tonight, the planes were less than eight football fields and only a few seconds apart.
