Good evening, and we have several developing stories tonight, and we begin with the simmering tension across this country. Those for and against President Trumps immigration crackdown. And today, the president called it a military operation at the border. After we offered those words during a meeting at the white house, his own Homeland Security secretary had very different words about the operation. So which is it . Abcs matt gutman on the crackdown and how its being enforced. He is not far from the border in arizona tonight. Reporter at the white house today, President Trump declaring his new immigration crackdown a mooring success. Were getting really bad dudes out of this country, and at a rate that nobodys ever seen before, and they are the bad ones, and its a military operation. Reporter a military operation . Not according to Homeland Security secretary john kelly. No. Repeat, no use of military force in immigration operations. None. Reporter White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer later asked to clarify what the president meant by military operation. The president was using that as an adjective. Its happening with precision. Reporter the department of Homeland Security telling us it doesnt have the Data Available to support the president s claim. John kelly with rex tillerson. A diplomatic mission. Ahead of their visit, a replica of the border wall burned in vera cruz. Mexico furious with the administrations new plan to deport some undocumented immigrants to mexico even if they are not mexican. Let me be very, very clear. There will be no, repeat, no, mass deportations. [ chanting ] reporter but concerns over the new trump immigration policy now spilling into those contentious congressional town halls. You work for us. [ cheers and applause ] reporter and tonight, in arizona, fewer than 50 miles from the border so its about an hour and a half before this town hall is set so start. There are at least a couple of hundred people here. The line snaking around the church here. All waiting to see, and perhaps grill congresswoman martha mcsally. No. Matt, you spoke to people lining up to get in right will the. Its not just immigration. What else are they telling you . Reporter david, its also about health care and about womens rights. But what you may be able to hear are the chants of dozens of people who arent able to get inside, and the questions here, almost exclusively have focused on donald trump, david. There was Something Else that made news today. The president saying, when it comes to nuclear weapons, our nuclear arsenal, quote, we are going to be at the top of the pack. What does this signal . Heres jonathan karl. Reporter today, President Trump declared he wants the United States to be the worlds dominant nuclear power. It would be wonderful. A dream would be that no country would have nukes, but if countries are going to have nukes, were going to be at the top of the pack. Reporter currently, russia has slightly more Nuclear Warheads than the United States. But both countries have enough to destroy all of human civilization. Before taking office, trump tweeted, quote, the United States must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability, and he spoke with david muir about the moment he received the nuclear codes. Trump vowed to bring that up when he meets with putin, telling reuters, to me, its a big deal, and today, rare Public Comments from the president s chief strategic, steve bannon. Today, he told a group of conservatives the president wont moderate his views and wont back down from an allout battle with his opponents. Bannon and chief of staff, Reince Priebus pointed to the courts, and not just kneel gorsuch, but the fact that the president may be able to nominate more than 100 judges to lower courts. There is also reaction this evening to the administrations reversal on policy involving transgender students and the bathrooms they can use. Saying Public Schools no longer must allow transgender students to use the bathroom of their choice. President secretary shawn spicer saying today, its not a matter for the federal government to decide. I think its not a question of whether its a civil right. Its where its appropriately addressed. And as i noted, its addressed at the state level. Education secretary, betsy devos said schools have a responsibility to ensure that all student ks learn in a safe and trusted environment. We turn to a developing headline coming in from kansas city tonight where a suspect is facing a murder charge after he opened fire at a packed sports bar, killing one and injuring two, and tonight, questions about whether race was behind the deadly shooting. There are reports of what the gunman might have said before firing. Heres pierre thomas. Reporter tonight, the fbi is at the scene of austins bar and grill outside of kansas city, investigating what could turn out to be a vicious hate crime. Last night, just after 7 00 p. M. , three men were shot. One fatally, in a barrage of gunfire. Two for of indian descent. According to press reports, the gunman reportedly yelled, get out of my country, before shooting. Our role in this investigation is to work jointly with Law Enforcement to determine if an individuals civil rights were violated. The suspect was caught 80 miles away at another establishment. Reporter he told a bartender he needed a place to hide out, and the police were called. Next tot protests erupting after an offduty officer fired his gun, and young people running for cover. There is new video emerging, and does it offer more to the story . Kayna whitworth. Reporter outrage in california. Hundreds of protesters demonstrating. Some, smashing windows and vandalizing homes, demanding the firing of an lapd officer who pulled a gun on a group of teens. Tonight, new video showing more of that heated altercation between the offduty Police Officer and this 13yearold boy. Let go of me. Reporter the los angeles Police Officer was reportly upset this group of teens had walked across his lawn. The boy claims the officer insulted a female friend. And the officer believes he heard a threat from the 13yearold. You said you were going to shoot me. I didnt say that. Reporter the fight es ka it laing, and another teen pushes the officer over a hedge. As the officer struggles with the group, he reaches for his gun and fires a shot. The 13yearold spoke to telemun telemundo. I thought i was going to die right there because i thought he was going to shoot me because he was mad. Reporter police arriving minutes later, questioning the officers but only rirs arresting two teens who were released. There was insufficient evidence at the time to prove the actions rose. Reporter that officer remains on administrative leave during the investigation. Parents are suing the lapd and Police Department saying that officer shot his gun dangerously close to teenagers. David. Thank you. From indiana tonight, the reward is growing in the hunt for the murderer of two teenage girls. Police have given out this photo and an audio recording of the suspect.
