A major winter storm is bearing down on the Delaware Valley and now crews are working hard to get ready. Blizzard and winter storm warnings go into effect in about three hours from now. A potentially dangerous march noreaster wont be too far behind. It is monday night and the big story on action news is the snowstorm looming off to our west. The city of philadelphia could see a foot of snow and that is prompting the City School District to close all Public Schools tomorrow. The same goes for archdiocesan and parochial schools in the city of philadelphia. Of course we have School Closures for you running at the bottom of your screen continuously. Those are also available on our web site 6abc. Com. Live to Philadelphia City hall where officials are expected to give an update on snow preparations. Were streaming this for you on our web site 6abc. Com as soon as it gets under way. In the meantime we have Live Team Coverage tonight from the suburbs to the shore and the impact this noreaster will have on our region but first lets get the latest from accuweather. Meteorologist cecily tynan at the big board tonight. Cecily. Hi, rick and double scan live showing a major snowstorm that is beginning to gel, to come together. Weve got a few pieces that will Work Together to create this storm. Weve got low pressure surface low over the gulf of mexico. What in will do is head over to the carolinas. At the same time this piece of energy from the Northern Branch of the jet stream will dive down, they come together, they fade, they bomb out intensify and then that storm system will hug the east coast as it moves up to the north and that will pull in a lot of moisture and some cold air. Now, the a blizzard warning has been posted to are areas north and west of philadelphia. All the counties in orange. These areas can expect 35 miles an hour winds reducing visibility to less than a quarter mile for three consecutive hours so its not just the snow piling up, its the snow blowing down creating near whiteout conditions. Most of our viewing area in the pink under the winter storm warnings. Those go in effect 8 oclock until 6 oclock tuesday but really the snow should be holding back until about 10 oclock and 1 oclock moving in from the southwest to the northeast. It will start light but its in the middle of the night its cold out there, it will be sticking on untreated roads immediately. The height of the storm between 3 oclock in the morning and noon. This is when were looking at the heaviest precipitation, the strongest wind. When that storm system is really intensifying and closest to us. By mid to Late Afternoon it will be ending as light snow, winding down and what you get is all based on your location. North and west of philadelphia, this is going to be a snow event. Near philadelphia and areas to the south and east, snow changing over to a bit of mix ending as snow and southern delaware extreme southern new jersey this is just mainly rain but the precipitation isnt the only concern. For more details on that lets head over to adam joseph. Adam. Exactly cecily. A lot of snow to the north and west and a lot of rain along the shore and in addition to that coastal flood warnings going into effect mainly for high tide tomorrow morning between 9 00 and 10 oclock in the morning on average for moderate coastal flooding, breakers of six to 9 feet along the coastline. This also goes into the delaware bay and major erosion is also expected. Winds, thats another powerful part of a noreaster. Right along the shore 50 to 60 miles an hour. You have no friction meaning that wind comes directly off of the water, has nothing to stop it but once it hits land it hits that friction and it slows down so 45 to 50 miles an hour from philadelphia through trenton and dover and then 40 to 45 miles an hour to the north and west where that that wind will combine with the snow creating blizzard conditions. The biggest concerns with this particular storm will be that heavy wet snow, the consistency of it weighing down on everything. Well see rates of one to 3 inches per hour especially philadelphia to the north and west creating low visibility, snow packed roads. You do not want to venture out in the height of the storm tomorrow morning. Also with the weight of that snow, do prepare for possible Power Outages first thing tomorrow morning throughout the afternoon. Also when you take a look at our latest snowfall map theres going to be a sharp cutoff where theres snow versus no snow for between roxborough and millville, this is an example, theres going to be a 12inch difference over just 45 miles. Its all about location and where this is exactly going to set up. Well throw numbers on this for you in that full accuweather forecast coming up in just a little bit, guys. Thank you so much adam. System headed our way has already left a wintry mess here across the midwest. This is video from rochester, minnesota. Areas in the region and got between six and 9inches of snow making for slick conditions on highways and side streets. Well, now cities across the east coast are preparing for whats next. From the d. C. Area all the way up to boston, everyone getting ready for what could be the worst taste of winter theyve gotten all season long. Of course preparations are well under way in our philadelphia area. Theyre going to drop to 45 miles an hour, the speed limits on a you can in of highways including i76, i95, 476, u. S. One, u. S. 30 and 202. As they said here, they are. Expecting two to 3 inches of snow an hour at certain periods in the morning. That plus the wind will make for very poor visibility. They are asking people to avoid unnecessary travel. In other words, sit this one out at least during the morning hours. The way it looks right now during the a. M. Hours, anywhere from 10 to 4 oclock, even even before that, as early as 2 00 a. M. To 3 a. M. Youre looking at two to 3 inches an hour and that can be blinding conditions. Reporter across the region, workers getsing trucks ready to go p mechanics connecting how wide drawing lick lines. Elsewhere other crew members loaded trucks with salt to combat tuesdays predicted noreaster and snow. Steve oversees the citys fleet. It was more of a mild winter so we really didnt exercise the trucks as a typical winter so today were testing the spreaders make sure theyre working the truck scales making sure theyre up to speed and the plows as the day goes on. Reporter the brining of roads was done yesterday and early this morning. The city of philadelphia has more than 2,000 lane miles to clear. Tomorrow it hopes to have about 400 vehicles to salt and plow. Big trucks will be used for the main roads and at least 100 smaller four by four pickups like this one will be ready to use on the narrower residential streets. Thats our goal to make every street in the city passable. May take a little longer on some streets than others because of the tightness of the streets, the way folks are parked but we will make an attempt to get down every street. Reporter back to that briefing by pen do. Theyre asking people to avoid unnecessary travel tomorrow. Should you venture out theyre stressing you should have an emergency kit in your car that are would include food water warm clothes or blankets, a cell phone and charger as well as a shovel.
