WPVI Action News At 1230 PM April 28, 2017

Today, of course. And that includes one very dedicated eagles fan. We told you about her yesterday. Her name is gail waymeyer. And shes been a season Ticket Holder since 1961. Last night she walked out with Derek Barnetts first eagles jersey and handed it to commissioner roger goodell. How cool is that. We are joined by gail and her daughter to talk about that event. Thank you for being with us. What was that like . You knew it was going to be barnett before anyone because they handed you the jersey with his name on it. You gave it to goodell, he gives it to barnett. What was that like for you . Electric. It was just awesome. Reporter and you were chosen because youve been a season Ticket Holder since 1961. That was the year i was born of course. And its such a wonderful accomplishment. What keeps you being an eagles fan . Why all these years such an eagles fan . An avid eagles fan . I think the mean reason is it keeps my dad alive in me because my dad started me going to the game and now my girls go with me and its kept up as a family and eventually we hope to take the grandchildren. Reporter you were there as well and you had your camera phone up recording everything. What was that like for you . Absolutely amazing seeing her up there doing that. A dream come true. Who ever thought anybody in our family or anyone we know would get to do that. My facebook was going crazy. It was absolutely amazing. It was crying watching her up there. Reporter what has been the best part of that experience, of course besides the jersey and of course meeting me of course. What else has been you were telling me you got to meet some of the other fans throughout the nfl as well . Yes. Each team sent two people and we spent the whole day with them yesterday and they were the most gracious. We had a great time talking to them, we got along with them. And they whats the word i want . We cheered each other on last night. It was great. Reporter did you get a chance to meet barnett at all . No. Reporter what do you think of him as a pick . I think it will be good. Reporter thats an eagles fan for you. So today is day 2 of the nfl draft experience, you guys are just going to hang out and take part. You dont have to work it today. Just enjoy it. Gail, laura, thank you very much. Continue to be great eagles fan. Hopefully well see a super bowl and we can all cheer on that as well. Just before the eagles big pick last night the Arizona Cardinals scored. Hell play under the coach who coached the owls in the 80s. It was very special and it meant a lot. Especially to hear the uproar from the crowd when my name got called. I mean, that was beautiful. I didnt know that it was going to be that loud. It was way louder than i expected. And like i said, for all of this to happen in philadelphia, it was great. Reporter all right. So two more rounds of the draft take place this evening. If you want to get a behindofscenes look of all the action, head over to the franklin institute. Selection square is where all the picks are officially submitted. Its free to the public and open all night even during the draft. Just one more thing you can do, the festival spans the size of 25 football fields. So if youre going, you better wear comfortable shoes. Gray hall is right there in the middle of it all. The gates are open and there are so many more fans as far as yesterday and today. Reporter youre absolutely right, rick. Were at one of the gates, its kind of slow here right now. Dont let that fool you. As you said gates opened at noon. This is just one of several gates that people can go through. But just like yesterday, thousands and thousands of fans are expected to stand on the parkway and have a really good time. It is the largest attendance for a draft ever. Reporter day one was a huge success and we began day two of the nfl draft, vendors are preparing for the crowds. Its more fun in the sun along the Benjamin Franklin parkway. Day 1 shattered expectations. Philadelphia is on a roll, were having a series of moments as we should. Here we are with yet another large blockbuster sporting event. Reporter if you were not part of the excitement on day 1, there is still time to attend this outdoor football festival and perhaps one of the best things, it is free. The event spans the size of 20 football fields, so even with all the people there is still plenty of room to take in the draft experience and take part in all the activities. You really want to come down and experience the footprint. Go over in combine corner, do the 40yard dash. You also want to go through and see all the items in the museum. You want to spend time in the pro shop and you want to enjoy the moment. Reporter day 1 is already in the books and day 2 is expected to be just as successful and attract thousands more to the parkway. The fans are ready. I think its really cool for the city and all the people to come down and see what its like down here and get other people from other states come down and get the experience down here. Reporter all right. Back out live as we mentioned gates opened up at noon. You can see the folks have started to trickle in. Thousands expected to show up. If you missed out on yesterday, guess what you still have today and tomorrow and as weve been mentioning, it is free. So get out and have some fun. Rick . Reporter all right gray. Thank you. And if you havent noticed it is picture perfect on the parkway for your friday. Blue skies, plenty of sunshine and of course the summerlike conditions are continuing here as well. Lets check back in with david murphy with the details from accuweather and these are unseasonable like temperatures . We said it yesterday had the draft started a couple of days sooner, we would have had cold, cloudy and miserable conditions but the weather has cooperated. You can see earlier this morning we had clouds, radar with a couple of showers that came through. Thats well off the coast and we have bright blue skies. Just a couple little clouds and later we may transition to partly sunny skies. But generally speaking its going to be bright and obviously warm. Already in philadelphia were already up to 80 degrees with a flow coming up from the south and that will encourage of maybe a bump up of 3 or 4 degrees. Everybody along the east coast enjoying a nice warmup this afternoon. The winds arent that strong but they are coming from the west an the southwest today. 10 mile per hour wind inful, 6 down in washington. We expect the winds to remain fairly light today. In the meantime enjoy yourself down there. It does look like its a good time. Reporter it is. Its a lot of fun and as we mentioned the draft does continue tonlt rounds 2 and 3. In just a matter of hours the nfl remember a philly native who lost his life defending our country. He was killed in afghanistan back in 2011. Nearly six years later his wife and son christopher are at the nfl draft to honor his memory and his love for the philadelphia eagles. He was a humble man. He loved his country. He loved his men, he loved his son most of all, most importantly. And he said if anything was ever going to happen over there, it would definitely happen to him and not his guys because he felt like it was his personal responsibility to make sure that he sent every one of them home. He cared about so many people, so much more oftentimes than himself. He felt like he could protect the world. Like he was a real super hero. Reporter we were waiting to catch up with them after speaking with carson wentz when this moment happened. Wentz came over to spend some quality time with the family. By the way, wentz is christophers favorite eagle. How special is that. Well have continuing Coverage Later this afternoon beginning at 4 00. We also want to mention 4 15 today the eagles will officially introduce Derek Barnett at the nova care complex. Until then well send it back to you and well have much more from the parkway throughout the afternoon. Alicia . For the latest on the draft be sure to check out our special on the website. Winds west southwest at 10 Miles Per Hour and were probably adding a few more degrees to this before were done. And for the penn relays this afternoon, 81 degrees in a little bit as we head down for the afternoon session of racing, 82 by 2 00 and theres that high of 83. Might even hit 84 in here. By 10 00 if youre on the parkway for the latter portion of the draft tonight, still comfortable. 71 degrees and humidity not too bad today.
