We begin with breaking news in the federal corruption trial of Six Federal Police officers. All of them were found not guilty on all s. The officers were members of an elite squad. Prosecutors said they beat suspects and they faced additional charges as well. Now to the amtrak tragedy in Port Richmond and a quest to find out why the train was going so fast. Mayor Michael Nutter is set to give an update. In the meantime the ntsb is back at the crash site and they are combing for evidence and removing the wrecked cars trying to open one of the busiest rail corridors in the country. Katherine scott is live with the latest now. Reporter we have an update abc learned there was an eighth fatality in this crash that should start within the next several minutes, meanwhile work continues today and federal investigators are taking a 3d laser scan of the last two cars so they can virtually walk through them later and take any measurements they need. Its too early to draw any conclusions. Investigators for the National Investigation safety board are back at the crash site today, they know the train was speeding when it derailed but they dont know why. We are looking at the mechanical condition of the train and well always do that, and well look at the Traffic Control signals and the track itself and of course looking at the human. The engineer identified as 32yearold justin bostian, was an engineer for 11 years his lawyer says his client was distraught. He remembers coming to and getting his bag and turning on his cell phone and calling 911. He has not given a formal statement and has not been interviewed by the ntsb. We put a high priority on talking to the engineer, we want to make sure he is mentally and physically able to do that. They moved this morning pieces of cars for an examination the engineer submitted blood for toxicology tests and his cell phone records will be reviewed. Five of the eight People Killed in the derailment are publically identified. Jim gaines is from new jersey and Derek Griffith worked as a dean at a Small College in brooklyn and Rachel Jacobs left behind a husband and 2yearold son, Justin Zemser was just 22 years old. Bob gildersleeve is missing from baltimore, he is married and has two children. We are learning more about the survivors who remain hospitalized today 16 patients are still being treated at Temple University hospital eight of them in Critical Condition most of them suffered broken bones after objects or people fell on top of them during the crash. They range in age from 19 to 80 years old and they were extremely disoriented when they arrived at the hospital. It happened suddenly, they were sitting there and dozing off and they didnt know what was happening and the world was overturned, a lot of confusion and dazed people, when they got here they were dazed and didnt understand what had happened. Doctors expect some of the patients to require additional surgery but they expect all the remaining patients at Temple University hospital to survive. In addition to the 16 at temple, there are 18 being treated at other local hospitals. While also working with those that were injured, some who at times on our side may have been unaccounted for and ultimately seek to bring a sense of healing and closure to this incredible tragedy, that has taken place in our great city. While at the same time acknowledging the near miracle of survival that we experienced with over 200 people here in our city traveling mostly from washington, d. C. To new york city and while passing through the city of philadelphia a great tragedy and trauma took place. This is a massive efforts and its been painful. As we are already reported, there were seven deceased individuals confirmed. We are going to ask fire commissioner derek sawyer to give an update from work of the Fire Department and the Police Department this morning at the site. Commissioner sawyer . Good afternoon this morning around 8 00 this morning, we received a call to bring back our cadaver dog and we worked in conjunction with a dog with the Police Department and do another search of the first car that had a large amount of wreckage. The dog hit on a couple of spots and we were able to find one other passenger in the wreckage. We utilized our Hydraulic Tools to open up the train more and reach the person and we were able to extricate that person and have him transported to the medical Examiners Office, it was a great coordinated effort and the men and women did a great job throughout the whole event and we continue to have an engine and medics unit on scene to make sure everything is done as we go through the wreckage a Great Partnership with the Police Department, Fire Department and ems units getting this last person out. This was such a tragic occurrence and im so sorry on behalf of everyone in pennsylvania, i want to express my condolences to the families and the victims, but i also want to say as a pennsylvanian i am proud of the way this was handled by the folks here in philadelphia as the mayor says, this is an example of cooperation and collaboration we worked together through this tragedy and i condition say enough about the first sponsors that came to this site after the accident and risks their lives to save as many people as they possibly could as a pennsylvanian i want to express my pride and thanks to the mayor and his team for doing such a tremendous job such a terrible terrible tragedy. No derailment, no loss of life, today we are committing to im committing to meeting the requirement of positive train control, that will happen on the northeast corridor by the end of this year. I would like to say i have been a Police Officer for 32 years and this was a catastrophic event, my deepest sympathy for those lost and injured im proud of the response by the Philadelphia Police department that night it was a catastrophic emergency but the actions of the police that not and what i observed that night and after the incident and the manner in which the Philadelphia Police were joined with the Fire Department and worked as a team and rescued the injured in a miraculously short period of time. Im grateful to the office of Emergency Management for the support and amtrak specifically the Amtrak Police they arrived on location and integrated together with those immediately that allowed us to bring this matter to what we now have been well continue to Work Together until everything is returned back to normal. Philadelphia Police Department has an ongoing active criminal investigation into this matter and well continue to Work Together with amtrak and the District Attorneys Office in philadelphia. I just want to summarize things that you heard here this afternoon, they dont just come together and the way we respond to these things is years of planning and coordination and training and exercises we rely on utilities and we partner with public works and all the lighting you see out here, all the things that you dont think about outside of police and fire have to come together and that say testament to this city. Well have a presence here to support amtrak and the families that experienced this tragedy and well do that until we are told that we are no longer needed and we are here for the long haul with this one. And we can always learn from these and its our responsibility as a city and office of Emergency Management to make sure that what went smoothly this time continues to go smoothly next time. And any glitches we have we fix for the next time. Thank you to all the speaker, let me give you one additional piece of information. Commissioner sawyer explained we did recover the remains of one individual this morning. Those remains were taken to the medical Examiners Office as is our protocol. The remains have been identified as a person who was on that train and so if i can take you back to just two days ago at the time we believe based on all Information Available at that time that there were approximately 243 individuals on amtrak train number 188. With the recovery and the identification this morning, as this News Conference was taking place i just received that final confirmation, we believe that we have now accounted for all 243 individuals that we believe were on amtrak number 188 from tuesday night. All of the individuals that we believe that we were looking for or were trying to identify have all now been accounted for. Unfortunately, again we must report that we have confirmed eight deceased from this horrible tragedy. Eight deceased from this horrible tragedy. But all individuals that we had any reason to believe were on that train have now been accounted for and we know their whereabouts completely. Who was the final person . Let me finish. As fire commissioner sawyer indicated as chief specter sullivan indicated we will maintain a support role with amtrak provide any assistance to the ntsb in their investigation process and should any other
