Two of their own were killed and four others injured battling a house fire early this morning. Many, many people in line the street this morning, soluting as the procession carrying their bodies, passed by. Saturday night, im walter perez. Big story on action news is death of the the two wilmington fire fight hours lost their lives in the line of duty they were battling a house fire on lakeview street when the floor collapsed. Fallen Fire Fighters have been identified as 511 yearold jerry fickes and 41 yearold christopher leach. Action News Reporter jeff chirico has the latest from the scene. Reporter overcome by grief, misty napper could not bear to talk about fire fight hours lost their lives in the overnight fire. It is affecting her hard. Reporter heavy smoke and flames began, pouring from her home on the 1900 block, of lake view road before 3 00 a. M. It is so hot. Not just the fire but the smoke was burning your face. Reporter there were early reports of children trapped, but her mother says that everyone had gotten out before fire crew is a arrived. The chief says that Fire Fighters entered the home, and started up the steps. The floors, became very soft, brittle, and began starting to collapse. Four Fire Fighters fell down, and into the collapse of the the floor. Two of those Fire Fighters have passed away. Reporter crews pulled three from the basement but raging fire hade it difficult for them to reach the fourth. After an agonizing hour, a body was carried away with an hearn flag dropped over it. They were replaced in 2005 with led that promised to be brighter, lasting longer, more Energy Efficient and even operated through a state of the art computer system. But the years took a toll on the lights and they soon needed to be completely replaced. The city had no fund for the costly refurbish. And a private donor stepped up to cover the costs. Philadelphia parks and recreation along with the Fairmount Park conservancy organized todays ceremony, and celebrations, with a street festival at mlk drive and a brilliant display of the new lighting system at dusk.
