Reporter former police chief cathy lanier told them about the shortage more than a year ago. She said that the departments hiring cant keep up with the rate of retirement and officers leaving. Reporter his emergency bill would use money already being collected for automated Traffic Enforcement fees and fines. The new officers would work in high crime areas. Your arteries are destroyed. Reporter the symptoms had begun a few months earlier and gradually they got worse. It was one leg, the left side. I just noticed again my leg from the knee down, it went from reporter heng pain even tho diabetes runs in joels family, he tested negative for that and other illnesses. The doctors were puzzled. Well, youre so young and youre so active and everything on paper checks out as far as you being healthy. Reporter but after an mri doctors sent him immediately to dr. Rajesh malik. So joel had a relatively rare disorder that you see in young athletic people. He had whats called popliteal artery entrapment system. Reporter theres a main artery that goes from your groin down below the knee. Once it goes below the knee it breaks off into different branches. Paes almost always e worked congenital and can be activated by exercise. And it is rare. This was the first time dr. Matic had seen a case outside of medical school. He had quite advanced ischemia or lack of blood supply to his foot and had he was at risk of imminent loss of that leg. Reporter he treated joel with blood thinners at first to get the leg in better shape for operating. It went very, very well. We were able to see a muscle band constricting the artery and able to release it and get a very good technical result. Reporter joels right leg seemed fine but dr. Malik said its rare for only one leg to be affected. So he operated on joels right leg a few weeks later. Although joel patton says he still questions why this happened to him, he feels grateful it was caught in time. And hes working toward building up his strength and getting his life back joel pattons on the way backto. Knowing how close he came to losing his legs has given him new perspective. Dr. Malik will share what hes learned about this rare disorder at a medical conference in june. Today the national zoo revealed its 3yearold band da cub will be leaving for china in just two weeks. Starting next week the zoo will hold special events to celebrate bao bao before her departure, february 21st. She was the first surviving panda cub born at the zoo since 2005.
