Courthouse with an update. Tracee . Reporter if you look behind me you can see they have the command buildings out right now. But employees for the ward wing will not be going back into work today. Let me show you what it looked like earlier. Were talking about 500 people evacuated from that wing of the courthouse. They did this as a safety precaution. Now, they had several dozen folks, about 45 people to 50 who were checked out and some trucks they had set up out here to just make sure people were okay. They set up a triage unit and tested all of these individuals, people who work within the courthouse, and everyone tested just fine. No one was transported to the hospital. This is the crazy thing. Starting at 8 00 a. M. This morning, employees were complaining about coughing. Feeling nauseated, some dizziness and a strange smell in the courthouse that smelled like something was burning. They were evacuated shortly after 1 00 p. M. And a lot of employees who i talked to told me that they were frustrated about waiting so long for the evacuation. But again, when they checked everyone out, folks were fine. Some people still complaining of dizziness. No one sent to the hospital. Everyone sent home for the day. And theyre expecting people to be able to return tomorrow. They did test for everything. From c. O. To whatever gas may be leaking in the building. Did not find any issues. Im tracee wilkins, news 4. News 4 Learned Police are investigating if 19yearold Mary Shelly Goldsmith was killed by a popular new drug in headlines this week. Shelly was a popular sophomore and died over the weekend after collapsing at a club here in the district. News 4s Scott Mcfarland is live at the live desk with more on what were learning. News 4 learning police are investigating if she took the drug molly. According to sources, when paramedics were performing ceo, someone around her said she had taken molly and had come up on a bus from uva. Goldsmith was taken to Providence Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The cause of her autopsy has not been determined. Right now an autopsy is being performed. We will most likely not know the result of the tests for weeks. She was a jefferson scholar at uva. The drug molly has now been linked to several recent deaths. Two at a concert in new york. One in boston just this past week. At the news 4 live desk, im Scott Mcfarland. We have breaking news on the crisis in syria. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee has just approved a resolution authorizing the use of force in syria. Secretary of state john kerry and other cabinet members testified yesterday, and with todays resolution passed, they were on the other side of the capitol testifying for the House Committee on foreign affairs. Meanwhile, president obama is making his case overseas tonight. He stopped in stockhome on the way to this the g20 summit in russia. At a News Conference he rejected suggestions that he set a red line for action against syria. He says it was set by congress when he ratified a treaty, condemning the use of chemical weapons. Meanwhile, russian president Vladimir Putin says he may change the vote if he sees concrete proof that assads regime was responsible for the attack. He announced he would go to congress before taking action in syria. The dow jumping more than 96 points today. The nasdaq gaining 36. And the s p 500 closed 1 points higher on the day. We are tracking the latest developments out of ohio where late last night the body of ariel castro was found hanging in his jail cell. Castro was just beginning to serve a life sentence with no chance of parol for kidnapping and raping three women and holding them for a decade. Jay gray has the latest from cleveland. The man who held three young women hostage for a decade, chained and tortured inside his home. Im just sick. Lasted only 34 days in solitary confinement. Guards say ariel castro hanged himself late last night inside his ohio prison cell. In a written statement, the prosecutor who put castro behind bars called him a coward, saying, quote, this man couldnt take for even a month a small portion of what he had dished out for more than a decade. I think he had to sooner or later. He was given a nonsense penalty. Back in his Old Neighborhood why or how it happened didnt seem to matter. The stabbing occurred around 7 00 at Spring High School. Three people are in custody this afternoon. Its not clear if they all go to the school. Police believe the stabbing began after a fight. The school is closed until further notice. Other schools in the houston region are under increased security at this hour. A lockdown at a Connecticut Elementary School is over after a scare over possible gunshots. Police were called to cranberry elementary in norwalk after a teacher reported hearing shots fired outside. Officers scoured the area but didnt find anything. They believe the noise may have been from a nearby construction site. 26 people were shot and killed last school year. A move to legalize marijuana in the district is gaining momentum. The d. C. Council already considering a law to decriminalize small amounts of pot. But a group of activists wants to legalize it, and it wants d. C. Voters to decide. News 4s Mark Segraves has more. Reporter the majority of d. C. Council members have already signed onto a bill that would make having less than an ounce of marijuana a civil offense that results in a fine, like a speeding ticket. Some activists say thats not enough. They want to be able to grow their own pot, and they dont want police to have an authority over it. People dont want to be harassed anymore. Supporters appeared before the d. C. Board of elections today. They want legalization on the november 2014 ballot for voters to decide. D. C. Council member tommy wells who wrote the legislation says his bill isnt so much about pot as it is about the people who are getting arrested for smoking it. About 90 of those that are arrested in the District Of Columbia for using small amounts of marijuana are africanamerican. We have the issue of social injustice. He says decriminalizing pot will only lead to confusion. People think its legal, although its not. And the black market is just going to have more customers, i think, because no one is growing it for themselves. I dont believe that growing marijuana in your home is really an issue of social justice. Thats more about legalizing the substance. And im not sure our city is ready to do that. The bill to decriminalize marijuana is expected to pass the council and could be law by early 2014. Voters can be asked for smoking pot should be legal in the nations capitol. Mark segraves, news 4. We have new information. Its about what happened in the hours in the hours that led up to the suspicious death of a mcclan teenager. A search warrant was executed on the home of a 20yearold man who is believed to have been with the 16yearold two nights before she was found dead. Her body was discovered on friday, august 23rd. The man tells police she was with him while he was drinking beer and smoking pot on wednesday night. David will have more about the warrant and reaction to the man who is named in it. Police have identified him as 49yearold from northwest d. C. Officers found him at the bank on monday night near beach drive and joyce road.
