Years. They were awakened in the middle of the night and saw the flames. They were nearly in tears as they spoke about the fire. We heard two shots, the shot of flame shooting high in the sky and we thought, my god, whats that. Probably cant be replaced. Im sure theyre insured but people with can not be replaced so theres a lot of heartbreak. It makes you wonder how quick things can change our lives. Reporter the fire quickly went to a fourth alarm, although firefighters got here fast they say that heat and flames were too intense to go in. They were alerted to the blaze at about 3 30 in the morning by an alarm company, and that was quickly followed by a 911 call from a neighbor. I dont get why a Smoke Detector or something wouldnt have woken them up or got them, you know i dont get it. I dont think this needed to happen. Reporter the multimilliondollar home is owned by don pile an i. T. Executive and fiphilanthropist. Neighbors say its a nice family. Theyre just hoping everyone is okay. Really really nice people. Today neighbors helped a family had to scrub hateful graffiti off their garage door. This happened in a secluded part of chevy chase along glen mor drive. The victim a family a family that just moved into that house five days ago. Its happened in the community of north chevy chase. Its horrible. I cant when you see it you think its shock because you dont think it really happens that much anymore. Reporter it happened in the dark hours of the morning on glenmoor drive. Im horrified that it could possibly be somebody in the neighborhood. Reporter it happened on the day set aside to honor the work of reverend dr. Martin luther king. I am shocked at this. So shock. In my neighborhood . Reporter a couple doors down. Oh my god. Reporter a message of hate spray painted on a garage of a home in this fashionable Montgomery County neighborhood. The home occupied by an africanamerican family that just moved into the house five days ago. The Family Called Police to report the crime, but they didnt want to go on camera to talk about the incident. Neighbors came out to help remove those hateful words from the garage and reassure the family that they were most welcome in the community of north chevy chase. Obviously we do still have discrimination, you know we still have these problems in our country. But we havent seen them here. We have this is an integrated neighborhood and we like it that way. Also developing tonight, virginias Governor Terry mcauliffe is in the hospital recovering from an injury that occurred over the christmas holiday. The governors spokesperson says he was thrown from a horse while vacationing in africa broke seven ribs. Doctors expected that injury to heal on its own, and mccauliffe has been working as usual even delivering the state of the commonwealth address last week. But today he started to feel uncomfortable. A trip to the hospital found increased fluid around his lungs. Governor is expected to spend the night at the hospital and should be back at work within the next couple of days. Jool because. How much and what it means for students. Zwrud family and friends gathered in washington, d. C. For a memorial in honor of carol glover. She was riding in a metro train that filled with smoke outside Lenphant Plaza. Outside the church one of glovers two two sons said his mother was not just another passenger on the train. He said she was one of his best friends. My mother led a great life and everything she did was for others and was very happy and pleased with how the situation has been handled thus far and were going to proceed and just try to continue to get stronger as we go along. Anthony glover said he has talked to some of the passengers on that smoky train and said all of them feel like family now. Whilitis been a week since the tragedy, investigation is far from over and today news4 as learned of new concerns with communication between d. C. Fire and metro. Transportation reporter adam tuss joins us live from Lenphant Plaza with more on that part of the story. Reporter obviously we still have a long way to go in this entire investigation, but sources ive been talking to are telling me that a recent change the d. C. Fire agency made with its Communication Systems may have contributed to the communication breakdown here at Lenphant Plaza. The d. C. Fire department recently made a switch to en meaning only agencies that know how to properly tap into those encrypted channels can communicate with d. C. Fire. Three sources with direct knowledge of how the d. C. Fire system meshes with the metro Systems Communications tell news4 the metro system and the d. C. Fire Communications System may not have been synced up during the Lenphant Plaza episode last monday. Thats important because if metro couldnt actively communicate with the Fire Department during the episode, then time could have been ticking away while action should have been taken. Its an issue d. C. Mayor Muriel Bowser down played at a recent news conference. The communication is of course very important. I dont have any reason to think that the encryption has anything to do with it. Weve heard reports that some of our First Responders switched channels and were able to hear more clearly. Reporter the d. C. Firefighters association priestly has spoken against any sort of encryption saying it could lead to a major breakdown in communication during an emergency. And behind the scenes behind all the questions, now some bad blood brewing. The National Transportation safety board put out a statement after d. C. Fire released its preliminary report this past saturday basically saying all the facts havent come in yet. Coming up in my next report at 6 00, a congressional hearing scheduled for wednesday. And we are learning some new information about a toddler found wandering by himself in the middle of the night just a few blocks away from the Anacostia Metro station. Police are telling us someone flagged down an officer after they saw the child alone in the 1300 block of morris road in southeast. About 12 53 in the morning. The child didnt have on any shoes. Were told the boy walk out of the house when the babysitter fell asleep. The child has since been reunited with his parents. All right. Nice weather for this holiday. Our threeday weekend. And it will continue into the day tomorrow too. I think today pretty nice temperatures got up to near 50 degrees in some locations and will be there once again during our tuesday. Well watch a system that will make its way towards our area early on wednesday. High temperatures tomorrow out ahead of that storm system nice once again and mild 50 degrees in d. C. 52 down towards fredericksburg, charlottesville coming in at 52 degrees, luray around 47 winchester at 46 degrees. So looking pretty good for our day on tuesday. As we move on through the rest of the afternoon, the impact for tomorrows forecast really going to be on the low side. Youll see some clouds some sunshine micked in from time to time as we are expecting more cloud covers as the storm passes to our north but it wont gives any big impacts from the weather. Those impacts come on wednesday. First off future weather 9 00 a. M. Tomorrow theres the clouds. As we move on through the day, more cloud cover during the afternoon. So i mention the cloud but here comes the storm on wednesday morning. 9 00 a. M. Though after rush hour this is key starting to see some rain down towards the towards the west. As we move on through the day heres where the snow comes in. This is the biggest burst of snow right around noon from d. C. Up to the north gaithersburg leesburg frederick, baltimore, down to the south, this is a mix then down towards farther south this is mostly a rain event. Then its really out of here off and on. Notice gaithersburg and Frederick May switch over the rain so were not expecting bigtime problems as far as rush hour is concerned, but of course its something well continue to watch. Down to the south, just rain and not much of a storm at all. A new sans storm, liu wei, warrenton, washington up to the north and west could be disruptive around winchester leesburg frederick, martinsburg martinsburg, could be disruptive for your morning 8 00 10 00, 11 00 in the morning. Drug Overdose Deaths in virginia are surging, affecting families across the rrow virginias attorney general will be detailing his plan of action to save lives and to crack down on deadly dealers. Just looking at heroin death they jumped 164 in a twoyear time period. So i like the public to understand that this recent surge in Prescription Drug abuse and heroin abuse is something that can affect all of us. Reporter tomorrow flanery will join attorney general mark herring to urge the General Assembly to make immediate changes, a socalled Good Samaritan bill would allow those in fear of overdose to call for help without fear of arrest. It would encourage them to pick up the phone and call for help. The goal of these bills is to save lives. Reporter another bill would expand a Pilot Program to allow Law Enforcement officers to give naloxone to those suffering from an overdose. The antidote counters the potential deadly effects. Some states have shown by providing first responder, Law Enforcement, and others with that drug theyre able to save lives. In fairfax, virginia julie carey, news4. Five pit bulls are safe warm and fed tonight after being rescued from a glen burnie home. Anne Arundel County Police were serving a search warrant over the weekend when they found the dogs chained to a post. They were freezing and starving and unfortunately a sixth pit bull was found dead froze on the ground. Theyve been named hurricane, blizzard, whirlwind, tsunami, and tornado. Right now theyre not up for adoption but the Department Hopes to find them new homes. A warning for dog owners in arlington. Someone may be trying to poison your pet. These signs were put up today. Grading scale was adopted back in 2013 but it was never really implemented. Now theres a bipartisan effort to get rid of it for good and the effort passed a key hurd until the state senate today. Contributes of the grading scale say f grades could stigmatize students and make it harder for schools to recruit teachers. Governor Terry Mcauliffe supports thecm repeal. Education at the university of maryland just got a wee bit more expensive. Tuition is going to go up just as the Spring Semester gets set to begin. Reporter the university of maryland is gaining National Attention as it lead the big ten in basketball, but the University System suffered a financial setback when the state of maryland recently slashed 40 million in aid to universities as it makes deep cuts caused by the states budget deficit. As a result the university of maryland is imposing an immediate 2 tuition hike. The first midyear increase in 12 years. How are you going to pay for it . I have no idea right now. Im a fulltime student at maryland i already work two jobs so i have no idea where im going to scrounge up the money to make um for that money. Reporter the tuition for outofstate students increase is 279. Instate students pay 76 more. Similar increases are being imposed at towson Salisbury University after a 3 tuition increase in the fall. Do you know how youre going to pay for it . Have you budgeted it for it . No. Hopefully find a job around the area. Reporter the College Park Campus also decided to furlough University Employees for up to three days. The furloughs will account for about 3 million in savings. The tuition increases will add 4 million in revenue. Have you been notified of the tuition increase . I havent, but im sure my parents have and, you know, makes it difficult for us to budget for our family. Reporter the university of maryland is on winter break. The new semester begins january 26th. She delivered them via csection but died hours later. Even in tragedy this family grows because those four babies in arizona and we cant wait to see them and hold them. Cases are now reported in utah colorado washington state. That airborne virus is so contagious it can stick around after the infected person has left the room.
