Fire department doesnt recognize it as a line of duty illness. Larry has like what were seeing people coming off the 9 11 that worked that pile. Congress recently passed legislation so that the 9 11 First Responders could collect full benefits, but d. C. Firefighters who get cancer or other illnesses are forced to retire with only limited benefits. Theyre put in the position where they can no longer do their job because they wouldnt be eligible for retirement. Were not being supported. Councilmember kenyan mcduffy who oversees the Fire Departments budget declined to answer our questions about why the bill he voted for isnt funded.
