An Early MorningFire Destroys a local hotel. I wi guests at this hotel in Northern Virginia heard several loud booms in the middle of the night and thought they were under attack. A few minutes later, the building was engulfed in heavy smoke and flames. In fact firefighters were still trying to put the fire out hours after those initial explosions. This happened at the quality inn in the alexandria section of fairfax county. News4s Darcy Spencer is live on richmond highway. And darcy, this seems like it could have been a lot worse. Reporter it certainly could, if you think about it. This happened at the worst possible time 2 30 in the morning, with the hotel filled with 200 guests. There was a possibility for massive loss of life. Fortunately that did not happen. As it turns out, there were some air force cadets staying here from new york city and im told they went door to door inside here and told everyone to get out. Now, there were some reports of some explosions here inside the hotel. What i can tell you is the Fire Department says that there is nothing suspicious about this fire. It is electrical in nature, started on the first floor in the electrical room and that it was accidental in cause. As we said, this could have had the potential for a lot of loss of life and fortunately, there was only one injury. Three little small explosions and then there was a real real big explosion and thats when they started telling people to get out. I thought that maybe we were under attack or something, so of course we all went back into our rooms. Then decided for everybody to come out. So we just we just ran. Reporter now, the Fire Department also tells me that the fire got into some of the airspaces within the building. Thats very dangerous. Theres a potential for flairups so they are going to keep a fire engine right here on the scene in the overnight hours just in case there are any of those flare ups. Back to you, chris. Thanks darcy.
