Council officially confirmed Peter Newsham as the new police chief, 121. Newsham has been on the force for 30 years and his tenure hasnt been without controversy. Officer Michael Slager entered the plea this afternoon, more than two years after he shot walter scott in north charleston. The officer pulled him over for a broken brake light and cell phone video appears to show slager shooting him five times in the back as scott was running away. Now scotts family is calling it vindication for their son. Today is a day of victory for walter. We got justice. He told the truth. He said he did it. And thats our victory. And the healing starts today. In exchange for entering that guilty plea, the state is going to drop murder charges against slager, but he could still receive a life sentence on the federal charges. Trump ordered a Cruise Missile strike in syria after the chemical attack on civilians. Reporter but these two from maryland got a surprise as they left the telegraph road store. We bought cigarettes and we came out and all of a sudden the police started rolling in, about ten of them, plain reporter this search warrant reveals what the raid was about. And why the owner of both stores was arrested. Starting last summer, police were watching as a confidential informant took stolen property into the tobacco mart. A female employee gave him 270 and put the item behind the counter. Its happened several times since here and at the other store. As recently at last week, stolen property brought in for cash. When police raided the place, they always found marijuana. The store owner is charged with receiving stolen property and drug distribution. Very surprised. Because just surprised. Reporter that was the reaction of most regular customers today to word of the charges. I thought he was clean as a whistle. Thats why i come in here. I enjoyed coming in here. Theyve been very friendly, very cooperative. No issues, always been fair. So it seems like a nice place to come. Im julie carey, news4. Five former metro track inspectors are suing the agency. Theyre challenging metros claims that workers falsified track inspection reports. Our news4 partners at wtop radio were first to report this lawsuit. The inspectors called metros findings fraudulent. The workers say many times they reported the track problems, but maintenance was never scheduled. More than a dozen track inspectors were fired in the wake of a derailment last july. There was a rally today for the planned purple line in maryland. Leaders from all across our region gathered to try to kickstart the transit project thats been stalled. Now reporter this group gathered at the Silver Spring library, a planned stop for the purple line, but the project is delayed by a federal lawsuit questioning how many people would ride this light rail system, which would connect bethesda and new carrollton. Well, the crowd is thick in silver thing. Supporters of the planned purple line, remember, its a light rail system that would run between bethesda and new carrollton. Representatives from both montgomery and prince georges county. The workers who would help build the purple line are in attendance as job, but the benefit that would come from building the purple line and all of this is held up by a judges ruling, saying that metros woes could impact the purple line. Even with the purple line in limbo its impacting people. Some jobs and businesses have relocated to make way for the route. Thats why some say maryland taxpayers are losing money because of the delays. Weve moved well beyond almost a year from the time that we thought wed be moving for the project. That costs money. This happened last july. Alton b. Sterling was pinned to the ground by the officers who were arresting him. There was the detective says that he observed the butt of a gun in the front of his pants pocket. There was an issue in the investigation on whether sterling was reaching for the weapon when he was shot and killed. This was one of the first cases that the Justice Department has reviewed under new attorney general jeff sessions. Theyve decided not to bring charges against those Law Enforcement officers.
