Both sides agreed to the terms of a vote audit. The audit was started after concerns about the legitimacy of the election results. The results of this election will ultimately determine who succeeds current President Hamid karzai. Back to that breaking news out of iraq now. The u. S. Military conducted a targeted air strike against islamic militants in iraq. For more on the air strikes, we are joined by carrie dan from nbcs Political Team. Good morning. Good morning. And we say and cant say enough that this was not an attack against the country of iraq, this is against those militants, is that right . Right. This is a group called isis. A group of islamic militants. They have been advancing all summer throughout the country of iraq. Now, what this air strike is in response to is that these forces were pressuring Kurdish Military forces in northern iraq. Those are both the kurds are a great ally of the Obama Administration and they are also known as very fierce fighters, so it set off alarm bells at the pentagon when isis was able to overtake some of the kurdic military positions. And the president warned yesterday. Why now . Well, what happened was over the weekend and the last couple of days the isis forces, which washington thought that these Kurdish Forces would be able to hold back those attacks, that proved wrong. Isis has been able to advance. And there are some u. S. Military interests in the city of erbil, which is in that kurdish region. The pentagon got concerned if these isis forces continue rolling forward, thats what set off the alarm bells that prompted these strikes. The president has said hes very much against a fullscale military action in iraq. Lets take a listen. As commander in chief i will not allow the United States to be dragged into fighting another war in iraq. How does the Iraqi Government feel about whats happened . Well, we have heard from Kurdish Forces saying thank you to the United States for intervening for their support. They have been asking for u. S. Support and humanitarian aid. Now, dont forget theres also a humanitarian situation going on in that region. There are ethnic and religious minorities that have been driven into the northern iraqi mountainous region by these isis forces and theres starvation. Theyre unable to get food. That was another part of what the president announced yesterday was humanitarian drops in that region as well. Now, how do our european allies feel about what weve done . So far weve seen a lot at least within the United States weve seen support from across the partisan spectrum. Weve seen democrats and republicans saying something needs to be done. But there is concern globally and especially among lawmakers in the United States. Okay, this is what were doing in the short term. Whats the longterm strategy. Obviously the iraq war had slipped in popularity. In june 71 of americans said the iraq war was not a good idea so obviously the country does not want to be drawn into a prolonged conflict. A lot of people are asking the question what comes next. How can we prevent this sliding into a larger scale conflict. Well be watching for that over the next days, im sure. Thanks so much, carrie.
