clearances i haven t been able to get in 30 years. mark, at this point, the air traffic controller and his supervisor have been suspended pending the outcome of an investigation. what do you think should happen to them, mark? well, i think right now the vestigation is going to continue, and depending upon what the ultimate examination of the evidence turns out to be, these people could lose their jobs. this is a serious business. it is not designed to be a childcare center. it is designed to take care of the business of flying and flying safely, and to bring your child in, to turn that microphone over, whether you are instructing him or not, is not the rules and regulations that enable us to fly a very safe air traffic control system. fred, ten seconds. he s not wrong about that and could we see him in soichi in 2014? meredith will get him to commit to that live in just a couple of minutes. he is being cagey about that. all right. inside studio 1a, i m matt lauer along with meredith vieira. and also ahead, more of our special series people i love it secret filth exposed! why did you look at me that way when you said that? our topic is rental cars. we tested cars from six rental companies and our experts called the result shocking. that s just ahead. also, who could forget this heartbreaking image? nick schuyler floating along on top of a capsized boat. this happened last march following an accident that led to the death of three of his friends. coming up, he ll join us for his first live interview to talk about what was an extraordinarily harrowing experience and perhaps set the record straight about what happened. he s the only one who knows what happens. let s begin with new developments in the case of murdered teenager chelsea king. john gardner has been charged with his murder. and we ll talk to the father of another missing teen in the area who feels his daughter may also be a victim of gardner s. first, nbc s janet shamlian is in san diego with the latest. janet, good morning to you. reporter: meredith, good morning. you could barely move in the hallway outside the courtroom where the arraignment was held yesterday. the courtroom seats about 100, but twice as many classmates of chelsea king showed up, they say to look her accused killer in the eye. in shackles with his eyes focused on the floor, john gardner stood before a courtroom filled with chelsea king s family and friends and pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and attempted rape. chelsea s devastated mom and dad were there to face their daughter s alleged killer. the special allegation attached to the murder does make the defendant eligible for the death penalty. reporter: with angry residents holding signs outside the courthouse, the district attorney acknowledged the toll chelsea s death has taken. this has rocked san diego. it has rocked all of us. and as we move forward, we need to move forward and wrap our arms around this family. reporter: the community s simmering anger overflowed with spray-paint. vandals wrote on the garage of gardner s parents, chelsea s ood is on you. move out. they do have chelsea s blood on their hands, to allow this individual in this neighborhood, because that s the house, from what i hear, where it s happened before. reporter: the home is a short distance from the park where chelsea went missing last thursday. when she didn t return home from an after-school job, her father went looking, finding her car but not his daughter. over four days, thousands of volunteers combed the park s foliage-lined trails. the teen s body was found in a shallow grave tuesday. the second charge against gardner, assault with intent to commit rape, relates to a december attack in the same park, and likely means prosecutors will have a witness. the victim in that attk recognized gardner s picture after he was connected to chelsea s case. gardner is not charged in the disappearance of 14-year-old amber dubois, who vanished last year close to where gardner lived with his mother. the fact that that s in place in this case could help prosecutors, could be a major bargaining chip, causing this defendant, gardner to give information as to the whereabouts of amber dubois. he s a monster that we don t want a connection to. so, we re hoping that this extra exposure will help someone out there locate our daughter for us. reporter: for one family, still a glimmer of hope, hile another struggles with its grief. and it s grief beyond the king family. emotions are still very raw out here. people are both sad and angry, as that act of vandalism at the gardner house yesterday so clearly illustrates. meredi, back to you. janet shamlian, thank you very much. maurice dubois s daughter, amber, has been missing since february 13th of last year. mr. dubois, good morning to you and thank you for joining us, on what has to be an extremely emotional time in your life. yes. good morning, meredith. i know that you were at the hearing yesterday for john gardner. why did you feel the need to be there? and what was your reaction when you looked at him? what were you thinking? well, first of all, i d like to express our whole family s condolences out to the king family. and we really wanted to show our support for the entire king family and to be there for chelsea. we also don t know if there is any link between mr. gardner and amber, so, if there is, i want to be there for every moment of his trial. when you first realized that mr. gardner had been arrested in connection with what was then on sunday the disappearance of chelsea king, what was your immediate reaction? had you heard his name before? it didn t strike us right away, but we did do a list of sexual predators in the area of escondido, where amber went missing, at the time that amber went missing, and we did find his name on that list, so yeah, he was one of our initial targets as far as sexual predators in the area to be looked at, but as far as when we first heard it, it was sickening us, you know. yeah. it just brought it all right back to home. yeah. at the time that amber did go missing, do you know if the police followed up on that and actually talked to mr. gardner? they have escondido pd had informed us that they had one officer who s in charge of all of the 290s, or all of the sexual predators in the area, and it was that officer s responsibility to interview all of them. mr. dubois, do you believe that he could have something to do with the disappearance of your daughter? we re hoping not. we re really hoping not. seeing as what this monster is capable of, we don t want any connection to amber, but the eerie similarities of the cases, both girls were 5 5 , both were 130 pounds, both white, both beautiful girls. the locations between the two, less than 7 1/2 miles between the two incidences. so, yeah, in the back of our head, we are kind of concerned that there is a connection. i know that you ve said that you remain hopeful that you will find your daughter. you ve had the support of so many friends and family, many strangers who have looked day after day for her and followed any leads that are possible. what is a typical day like for you since your daughter disappeared? oh, it s a nightmare that you just want to end, you know? you think you thinkhat there s going to be a silver lining at the end of this, but every day just seems to drag on longer and longer. i know you remain hopeful, though, that you will find her. if she is out there, what would you like to say to her, to your daughter, amber? oh, yeah. we re constantly going to remain hopeful, and amber, if you can hear me, sweetheart, please keep in mind that your family loves you so much. stay strong, stay faithful and please believe that we are going to find you one day. we ll have you back home with us. maurice dubois, i can t thank you enough for joining us this morning. i know how difficult this is for you, but you want to keep that message out there in the hopes that anyone with any information will present it to the police. so, thank you again for being here. well, thank you very much, meredith. and again, if you have any information on the disappearance of amber dubois, who was 14 at the time of her disappearance, you can call an anonymous tipline. the number is 760-743-8477. again, that is 760-743-8477. or logon to the website bringamberhome.com. now let s switch gears and get a check of the weather from al. thanks a lot, meredith. and again, chilly contions down through florida. if you re vacationing, spring breaking down there right now, 29 in tallahassee. they ve got freeze warnings up to the north. 47 in ft. myers, 61 key west, miami only 49. temperatures only struggle to get into the 50s and mid-60s throughout much of florida today. rest of the country, we have temperatureseratures that are wp well, there is a feeling of spring in the air this morning with welcome sunshine pouring down on the monument, live picture from ourity camera, even though it s quite chilly in the 30s, with a blustery northwest wind, at least that sunshine should up lift your mood. winds gusting up to 20 miles an hour. occasionally a little bit higher than that overnight tonight and into tomorrow. we may have a few clouds don t forget if you want to keep track of your weather all day long, check out the weather channel on cable or weather.com online. al, thank you. up next, could your next rental car be as dirty as a public restroom? the startling results of our investigation, right after this. in what? imported ice? yeah! i mean, people love imported water. so this is the next logical step. i think i ll stick with following my green line. oh, come on! hey, working with my guy at fidelity could have me retiring in a few years. and besides, couldn t people just freeze their imported water? don t be ridiculous. work with the company that s helping more people reach retirement than anyone else because when it comes to investing, you should never settle. fidelity investments. we call the bunches in honey bunches of oats the prize in the box. well, now there s a prize inside the prize. pecans! pecans! baked into crunchy oat bunches. taste the delicious surprise in every spoonful. honey bunches of oats with pecan bunches. beautiful. but my allergies put me in a fog. so now, i m claritin clear! claritinins the clear choice because it works great on all my allergies whether it s dust, mold, pollen, or pets and it won t make me drowsy, cause i want to be alert when i m working with animals. for me claritin works so well sometimes i even forget i have allergies which helps me focus on what s important. is she going to be okay? yeah. she looks good. in my life, i only live claritin clear. indoors and out. we re back now at 7:42. and this morning on secret filth exposed! we are talking about rental cars. nbc s jeff rossen is here wit what turned out to be the dirty details. jeff? how are you doing, matt? when we travel when you travel, i know when i travel, we think about germs in the airplane, we think about it in our hotel rooms and on the bed sheets, too, but let s not forget about the dirty rental cars that you just mentioned. think about it, hundreds of people use the same rental car every single year, and the bacteria we found inside could leave your family exposed. reporr: we launched our investigation here in miami. a vacation hotspot for families and coeds and one of the busiest rental car markets in the country. at miami international, we rented vehicles from six of the top rental companies, everything from sedans to minivans to suvs. when you rent cars, do you think to yourself, is there bacteria in here? i never thought about it. cars should be very clean, especially with all the money you re paying for them. reporter: but are they? to find out, we broke out the rubber gloves. and drove our cars to a certified lab where a team of microbiologists swooped in, swabbing every surface from the steering wheel to the gear shift, radio knobs, climate controls, window switches, door handles, floor mats, navigation system, even the child safety seats we rented. each sample was bagged and tested for dangerous bacteria. the results that we saw were shocking. reporter: lab director peter kamique says he couldn t believe what we found, obvious filth like leftover food in the cup holders, sticky residue on the dash and in this minivan, vomit on the floor. that s not acceptable. there are no circumstances where a car should go out with this type of residue in it. reporter: even more alarming are the germs you can t see. while two cars tested clean, four of our six came back with sky-high counts of bacteria. dirtiest spots, the steering wheel, door handles, window switches and the gear shift. he says this bacteria is also a market for stomach and flu viruses. as a result, you could be exposing yourself and not realizing it. reporter: and it gets worse. our lab found this minivan and suv teeming with another germ, betahemalytic step cookus. we found it all over the child safety seats. the child can touch the surface and then put his or her hands in their mouth and then become sick. reporter: he says some of our cars were so contaminated, they had as much bacteria as a public restroom. ew, disgusting! reporter: you got that right. that sincerely grosses me out. it makes me not want to rent a car anymore. reporter: it s not just our study. it appears rental cars are dirtier these days. according to a new survey by jd power, customer satisfaction is at a three-year low. insiders tell us in this bad economy, companies are slashing costs by downsizing the cleaning staff, rushing cars back out for rent before they re sanitized. it s like a factory. they just want to get them in and get them out, and they ll take the complaints as they come. reporter: bob minnelli ran a rental car franchise for ten years and wrote a book about the secrets companies don t want you to know. when i return my rental car, i m assuming somebody from the company looks at it before it goes out again. is that happening? not all the time. sometimes they ll look in a window and they ll peek here and there and they ll see, it generally looks decent, so they can get it back on the line. a good cleaning, maybe three out of ten cars get that. reporter: so, 70% of them are going out dirty? in my opinion, that s what i ve seen, yes. reporter: while we found most cleaning operations were bustling, don t be fooled by a quick vacuum job. in our test, some of the cleanest looking cars were the most infested with germs. this is a potential health problem. this could make us ill. so, i think it s renter beware. reporter: the american rental car association would not comment on our findings but told us for the rental companies, cleanliness is a top priority. the experts say all you can basically do is use these handy wipes, wipe down the steering wheel, wipe down all the buttons, places that people mostly touch. and matt, if you see your car is dirty, don t be embarrassed to walk up to the counter and try to get a new one. they want to know about it. is there a law about this, anyone governing this sort of thing? believe it or not, no laws, no agencies oversee it, just the rental car companies themselves. so it s really up to you or me to figure out if it s dirty or not. jeff rossen, thank you very much. sure. you might want to get that overcoat dry-cleaned. taking it off already. when we come back, what s next for apolo ohno? we ll talk to the most decorated winter olympian in u.s. history. . with quaker wild blueberry flavored multigrain fiber crisps. isn t this how whole grains should taste? eating well has never been so craveable with quaker caramel baked rice snacks. with quaker caramel baked rice snacks. by booking my family trip with expedia. first i find the flight i want. then a great hotel my kids will love. yeah. but wait. here s the really cool part. when i book them at the same time. voila! i can save up to 450 bucks. and we all know that can come in pretty handy. book flight and hotel, and save more. where you book matters, expedia. dot com that s why nature s bounty makes. a full line of high-quality vitamins, like fish oil for heart health. go to naturesbounty.com now for a $2.00 coupon. nature s bounty. perfect for every body. so i got my nephew to build a website. i hired someone to make my website. five months ago. we are building a website by ourselves. announcer: there s an easier way. create your own small-business site with intuit websites. just choose a style that fits your business and customize, publish and get found in three easy steps. sweet. all from just $4.99 a month, get a 30-day free trial at intuit.com. i have the medals, the hardware. i asked you how you re feeling and you said you were on cloud nine, well, maybe cloud eight. cloud eight, that s right. how are you feeling right now? i feel really good. i m in a great place. i had the best olympics of my life. it was coming full circle for me. i always thought in my heart there was some type of symbolism for me coming back to vancouver, being from seattle, learning how to skate in vancouver. but it s been amazing. i ve got about three hours sleep since last week. going, going, going, yeah. yeah, yeah. you said to me, it was never about breaking the record, although that s a great thing to do. so, if it wasn t about that right. what wast about for you. well, for me, obviously, winning medals for the united states is an amazing accomplishment, and you know, being a part of, you know, the olympic games in general is amazing, whether you win medals or not. that itself is an honor. but i came into those games, i just wanted to play the best that i could and be the best i could, regardless. if there was a disappointment, it was the 500-meter where you won the gold in torino. is that a race that you have played over and over again in your head since? i have. i have, but not because i m disappointed. just because that s the nature of my personality, you know? short track is a race that, or the 500 meters is a race that you have to be perfect in. and you know, for me, the number one goal was that i come to the games, i leave my heart and soul on the ice and i can walk away with my chin still held high with a smile. and i notice every single time when i got on the ice, before the race even arted, internally i was smiling, you know, because i had prepared the best i could. i had given every single thing that i could on the ice. and there s no greater satisfaction than knowing that you feel proud to be there representing your country and you raced your heart out. so, for me, being a sports athlete, and that being a part of my life was an amazing accomplishment. one of the most touching moments was after the 5000 relay when you went and hugged your every step of the way. he drove you from seattle to vancouver to train all the time. right, right. what did you two say to each other after that final race, that eighth medal? well, for me, i was very emotion emotional. my father there wasn t really many words shared. it was just the feeling, just kind of embracing each other, that you know, we ve come so far, and to be able to finish an olympic games with the eighth medal was amazing, and the first thing i wanted to do was to share that moment with him, you know, regardless of if there was cameras there. i just wanted to be there with my dad, because he sacrificed so much, as i have. and i feel like he has been there every step of the way for me and i ve been very blessed and lucky to have somebody like that in my life. there s a lot of people, a l of kids who maybe don t have someone like that. so i feel lucky and blessed to have such a great day. quickly, is eight enough or will we see you in soichi with your skates on? [ crowd cheering ] back at 8:08. leave it to jerry seinfeld, that wacky guy, to make marital disputes funny. wacky? wacky. in the marriage ref, real couples air their arguments on national television to a panel of celebrities. among tonight s panel, 30 rock s tina fey. if you just give them the schnookie, they shut up and do what you want. so, if you want him to pick up the kids or whatever, you wait for the moment immediately after schnookie. right. then you say, i love you, i need you to drive my cousins to the airport. this sounds very hot and sexy. in between picking up the kids and driving them to the airport. jerry seinfeld is here along with the show s host and actual marriage ref, tom papa. guys, good morning to you. hey, guys. good morning. good morning. i was asking you during the commercial, i said were you looking for a reason to get back into tv? you said no. so, what was the genesis of this? i think the genesis was tom and i have both been married ten years and tom is a stand-up comic, and we tour a lot together, and we talk about our wives and just laugh. and each guy s pain makes the other guy laugh. exactly. so, we figured out that, you know, whatever hell someone else is going through is entertainment for everyone else. but you really had a fight with your wife, jessica, right, that resulted in sure, yeah. a fight. it was one fight, that pivotal moment. that one fight that we had in ten years, yes. if i had a show for every fight i had, i d have my own network by the end. is anything off limits? in terms of, if these couples, when they air a dispute, any subjects you don t think are appropriate for prime time? yeah, if it s not fun. it s a comedy show. it really is the idea of the show is the funny conversations that you have with another couple when you go out to dinner about what a nightmare their respective marriag are, that s what we like to talk about. yeah. we don t want to get into really deep and in trouble. it s a celebration of marriage. you re staying in it, but you have these problems that just drive you completely crazy. right. but you are the ref. i am the ref. and so, at the end of the evening, after a lot of discussion and airing of this dispute, you get to make a decision. is your decision binding? i like to think so, but probably not. but i mean, if let s say it s a fight, one person in the couple wants to keep some old love letters right. and you decide no, they have to go or the photos have to go. right. do they have to burn them live on the air? no, no. no, they don t. we actually we had that one. yeah, we had that one, but we also had this issue with the dog. and the wife hates the dog and we made this call and yeah, his own dog. and the husband actually said, you know, i m not going to listen to this, but the wife said, yeah, but everyone now knows i m right. and i think in marriage, in a fight that you have all the time, just to have that little advantage, that all of america knows that you re right. but the fact that they know that all of america is watching, hopefully, right? i mean, don t you think that affects the way that they re going to fight? we don t care. that s their problem. yeah. no, it s kind of like,e really like the sports model of the show. yeah, yeah. which is you watch a call in baseball and the guy is clearly safe, the ump calls him out. everybody argues, but that s it. that s the call. it s over. it s over. and we get them we go to their homes way beforehand and record their fight. and we found like the greatest thing about married couples, they have had these fights their whole marriage. so, they don t care if cameras are the. they don t care if they re on the street or their family s around. they just go from 0 to 60 they sort of forget about the rest they forget about it. in a second, they are locked in their thunder dome. we ve got some panelists here who weigh in on these arguments, and just a couple of names jump out, jerry and tom. people like madonna, alec baldwin. now you recognize those names? we do. they re big names. when it comes to marriages, they ve had their share of issues. so, does that make them better panelists than someone else? yes. yeah, it does. the more you ve been through, the more you know. the worse, the better, that s our philosophy. give us a little perspective. yeah. people that have not you know, frankly, young people that haven t had this experience, ey really can t do it. you need a married person who says i ve been there, i ve done that, i know what that means. years of experience. yeah, it s good. ten years now, what are you and your wife fighting over now that might require the marriage ref? right this minute. she didn t like my tie this morning. i was just about to walk out. she said that s the tie you re wearing? i go, yes, because that s what s around my neck. and she goes, well, i think it s very dull. so, i changed it you did? and i thought, i could get into a thing about this because i happen to like it. it was a solid tie. she thought it was too quiet for a morning show. do you think he was right to change it, ref? i think he was absolutely right. and i think his wife was right as well. oh, man, what a chicken. diplomat at the same time. we should also mention one of our own is on your program. that s right. natalie morales. fabulous natalie morales. the greatest. just the facts, ma am. she s the greatest. her role is? she s the just the facts, man. because we have all these passionate discussions about these fights, but it s all opinion. so, sometimes to ground it, we need hard data and we go to our just the facts, ma am, natal morales. hard data. that s right, hard data. launching this show, the last time we did something like this was 1989, seinfeld. so, does it feel similar or not in any way. no? no. better, worse? just better because it s different in every single first of all, tom is the host. it s not a narrative, you know. we re not acting or reading scripts. everything about it is different. so, it feels all new and exciting. it s fun, and i ve been on it a couple times. i love being on the show. yeah, i ve noticed that. one of the great things is you have a never-ending supply of material. yes. we can find lots of things to fight about right in this studio. could we be possibly on as a television marriage? no. no? we don t rate? we ll see. we ll see. and for people who don t know tom papa, who may not know you yet, you re so great. everybody is going to fall in love with you for sure. oh, thank you very much. you re really wonderful. yeah, we were on the tonight show together. we were. after that, your career went wa way up. that s it. jerry seinfeld, thank you so much. thank you. tom papa, thank you. good luck. thanks. you can catch the marriage ref tonight at 10:00/9:00 central time on nbc, and natalie morales is on it, too. coming up, fresh flavor fast with the help of martha stewart. absolutely. you know, it s a little bittersweet, obviously, because i m the only one here telling it, but this is a way for me to kind of clear the rumors not just for myself, but for the other three guys in the family. we have a lot of ground to cover and i think we should go right to the moment of truth here. and you re on this fishing boat and the storm approaches and you decide you ve got to get back to shore, but you re anchored. correct. and the anchor gets stuck and a couple of options, one of them being cut the line and leave the anchor out there, but that s not the choice that was made, and i believe that a suggestion came from your best friend, will. and you decided to do what? correct. it was from will, who decided to move the anchor to the back of the boat, and we figured there was two things that would happen. either the rope would rip or, you know it would be freed. or it would be freed and that was not the case, obviously. you gun the engine correct. and what actually happened was the boat dipped down because it was still anchored and it began to take on water. right. and eventually overturned. immediately overturned. and now you re in the water, the four of you. by the way, we should mention it s not warm water. no. roughly a little over 60 degrees. and the weather is getting bad and you manage to get some life jackets, i understand? right. will dove underneath the boat and grabbed some jackets. but it s now four guys clinging to an overturned boat and the weather is getting worse and worse and worse. did you realize at that moment, nick, how dire the situation was? not exactly, you know, not really. you know, four guys, four football players thinking we re invincible. we thought we d be able to flip that boat over, but that was not the case. meanwhile, minutes turned into hours and hours turned into a day, and now it s night. you guys are frozen. i mean, 60 degrees doesn t sound cold, but being in 60-degree water for a long period of time, hypothermia absolutely. starts to set in, and it has a dramatic effect both physically and emotionally on the four of you. what was happening? people s motor functions were shutting down, particularly marquis and corey first it was very frustrating. there wasn t a whole lot to do, you know? we had to fight for one another, but it was definitely the worst thing to actually watch and go through, you know. it s agony, too. it s painful. you re getting numb and your joints are aching, and now, not only physically are you impaired, but in particular, marquis and corey started to have real serious emotional impacts from hypothermia. correct. what types of things were they doing? you know, things that they obviously couldn t control. a lot of slurring and swearing. they were kind of fighting. but once again, like you said, it was the hypothermia. i ve never seen them acting like that. i m not blaming them for it, but at some point, corey became threating physical. and was actually threatening to attack the rest of you. right. and you re trying to hang on to, i believe it was marquis, and corey is threatening to attack you. you have to make a decision. right. and you had to let go marquis. of marltsis. and what happened? at that point, we had only three jackets. will had just a throw cushion he was wearing, so, we had decided at that point, marquis had already passed, it had been some time and i was holding on to him. so, he was dead in the water and you were just clinging to him? at that point, i had positioned myself on top of the boat as i was rescued and i was kind of bear-hugging him, holding on to him for probably some time, little over a half hour, i would say. and corey continu to kind of wrestle, and once again, things he didn t know that he was even doing, and we had to make the decision on either letting him go or we re going to lose both of them. so, i had to let marquis go and we took his jacket. you watched him drift away. then over the next several hours, corey. corey was shortly after, unfortunately. what happened? same thing. motor functions were shutting down. you know, earlier, you know, roughly an hour before, he was very quiet. now the aggression from the hypothermia kind of set in, and unfortunately, he slipped away as well. so, at this point, then, it s just you and will. this is your best friend. right. for many years. you guys talked to each other, you said i love you. right. and at some point, he started to get physically sick. right. it was roughly 12 hours later. we fout all day, and obviously foaming at the mouth, and at some point, you had to watch him i had to watch him pass as well, correct. i mean, at this point, did you have any thought that you would get out of this alive or did you just assume you d be the last one to go under the water? you know, i never gave up hope, obviously, but watching three guys die in my arms, it obviously was in the front of my mind. so, you know, i knew at that point when i was by myself, obviously, i ll have to fend for myself, but you know, it was just a matter of time. i read in the book that you said the thought of your mom having to go to your funeral was something you simply couldn t bear. absolutely. and that s one of the things that kept you pushing on. mm-hmm. i just i couldn t imagine my mother i could see her sitting in front of a casket or not even that, you know, if i was never found, you know, breaking down, and that s what kept me going, really. you were rescued after, what, 46 hours? roughly 43 or so, right. still clinging to the overturned boat. and you know, nick, that over the last year there s been a lot of speculation. people say these guys had to be out there drinking, there had to be some kind of an argument. there have been also rumors and speculation that marquis and corey quit. they just quit and drown themselves. right. how do you respond to all that? since you re the only one who knows the story. you know, i ve heard it all, like you said. that s one of the reasons i did this book, once again, not for me, but for the guys and the families. it was a way to kind of put all the details in there and explain what had happened, but that is the last things that happened. you know, i wouldn t be here today without the three of them. so, i guess read t book, the best thing, and it will clear most of the rumors. you wanted to find a way to just remind yourself of this on a daily basis. you got a tattoo yes. didn t you? can we on my arm here. what s on that tattoo? can we get a shot over here? it s the three guys names, will s, marquis and corey s and i have an anchor at the bottom with a date attached to the rope. and it says in the hour of adversity be not without hope. i know that s the first thing you look at every morning when yowake up. absolutely. absolutely. nick schuyler, we re happy you re okay and are sharing this. thanks for having me. thank you very much. the book is called not without hope. our time right now is 8:26, 37 degrees out there, bright sunshine in the nation s capital. in the news4 day, d.c. now has access to federal aid to recovery from the blizzard of 2009 which dumped two feet of snow. president obama has made declarations for maryland and virginia. it s too early to know whether federal money will be available to help offset costs for back to the right? well, there s a little salt and pepper in there. okay. so you put that there. and you bake it, not fry it. bake it in the oven. so it looks like fried chicken. it s healthier, it s delicious. and this is what it looks like on the plate and you can taste, if you d like. how long did that take, martha, in the oven? it takes approximately, oh, about 20 minutes in the oven. very short time. delicious. what do you thin wonderful. so, all these recipes are in the new book and how many books do you have now, martha? yeah, but it s a wonderful, wonderful book and i hope you all enjoy it. and easy is important for people, right? easy. eight ingredients per recipe, no more. healy. and it takes less than an hour to make a whole meal. this is the kind of food that all of us are looking for. good stuff, martha. as always, thank you. and just ahead, what you can do to find 78 million americans are considered baby boomers, and tonight on cnbc, tom brokaw presents a two-hour look at the generation that vowed to change the world. hey, tom, good morning. nice to see you. good morning, matt. i think when people say baby boomers, they think of one kind of classroom filled with the same kind of people. it is a wide range because it goes from 1946 to 1964, and the landscape is really uneven in terms of what they achieve, what they hope to achieve and how they thought they should achieve it. i want to talk to you on the other side of something, but i want to first show a clip from your documentary. and this concerns two women who really kind of exemplify the dramatic changes that baby boomers have gone through. let s take a look. did either of you in your teenage years, in your wildest dreams imagine that one day you would be sitting side by side with another woman, you d be the chairman, you d be the ceo of an s&p 100 company called xerox? never. never. i didn t even know what a ceo was. i didn t know what xerox was. i didn t know about corporations. reporter: in july 2009, eight years after anne mulcahy was named ceo of xerox, she passed the baton to ursula burns and stayed on as chairman. two women, different races, sharing the leadership of a fortune 500 company. when you came to xerox, it was still pretty much a good old boys network at that time. it was. i think they were unique in the sense that they started to recognize the inherent biases. but the guys that you worked with, they went off and played golf together on saturdays, probably. i didn t go with them. i was a black female engineer in a white, male engineering environment. they knew that when i did arrive that they needed to do something a little different to make me fit in. reporter: american business had to adapt to increasing numbers of women in the workplace. just 40 years ago, women made up a little over a third of all workers. now half the nation s employees are women. one of the things that i m reminded of all the time is that we stand on the shoulders of the people who came before us. it s work-a-day for us now. it s work-a-day. we see women running around and blacks running around, really. i m often grateful to that handful of women who, you know, one generation ahead of us who really have the scars to show stepping out there. reporter: the enhanced role of women in the workplace has affected every aspect of society, from education to family life. it was the boomers who established the working mother as a new institution. what do you say to a young woman who is 38 years old and in your company and is a rising star, somebody you re really counting on, and she comes to you and says, anne, ursula, i want to go home and have a baby, my clock is ticking? we say congratulations. right. and i m not joking on that one. we would. but we d say, you know, don t ever think those things are mutually exclusive. that s right. because if you choose, this is all doable. it s not easy, but doable. and you should never have to make a choice to eliminate kind of that kind of personal fulfillment because you re serious about your career. those days are gone. there are good examples of where baby boomers have come, but how much time in the special do you stop and look at we re not done, we re not throwing in the towel yet as a generation. right. what about looking forward to where we re going? bill clinton is on this documentary tonight at the very end, and he says we ve kind of got to get out of the way of the upcoming generation. they have aard time prying their fingers off the levers of power, and we ought to devote the last part of our life to service. he thinks that could be the unifying theme, left, right and in the middle, and i think there s something to that, probably. as a generation, are the boomers as interesting as the greatest generation? oh, yeah. i think that they re much different because they ve got so many dferent parts. greatest generation went through two great, searing, identifying experiences, the great depression and then world war ii, and they had more in common, i suppose, in terms of what they wanted to achieve and how they were going to achieve it. this one is all over the landscape, as i said the other night. this one has madonna as a baby boomer. so is rick warren. whoopi goldberg is a baby boomer. so is sarah palin. so, you have that wide range. tom brokaw, thanks. appreciate it. the two-hour documentary, tom brokaw reports oh, you guys, i ve been thinking about this. do you have an issue in your marriage that could use the marriage ref ? absolutely. what s yours? the toilet paper roll. when it s done, my husband never replaces it. ew. and we have the toilet paper rolls all the way in the basement, so he never goes down and replaces it. so, i boycotted replacing the toilet paper roll in our bathroom for a while, just to see did he finally replace it? no. so, what happened? it took me 48 hours later. i m like going down to my son s bathroom to use his bathroom. i m like, this is just so not worth it. yeah. wow. i ended up replacing it. what about you guys? you win on that one. ours revolves around that. it s costco. i like to go to costco and i like to buy the big packages of paper towels and toilet tissue. it doesn t go bad. it s like money in the bank. where are you going to put that stuff, though? we have a basement. it goes in the basement. but deborah s feeling is it takes up too much space. i did kind of the same thing, i said you know what, i m not buying anymore. and we ran out. except i had my own stash. there s an ongoing toilet paper theme. what do you mean? oh, my gosh! well, somebody get the times. us is the animals. we have two cats and a dog and i think they should be allowed to sleep on the bed, if they feel like it. no! richard is opposed, tireless. i m with richard. really? why? they re part of the family! yes. you ve got a cat. i don t know, hmm hmm, boop! boop? well, they use the kitty litter. no, i took away their toilet paper, so, not in our house. no. they re animals. they sleep on the floor. not on the bed! good thing richard isn t watching. that s the only good news here. yeah, nobody will tell him. anyway, up next, how to be happy you need a ref. at any age, believe it or not. but first, your local news and weather. and don t forget, the marriage ref tonight at 10:00, nbc. 9:00 central. our time right now is 8:56, let s take a live look out at ronald reagan international airport. sunshining out there this morning. metro is getting ready to name richard sorrels as its new transit authority. he will serve for the next six to 12 months while it s search for a permanent gm takes ace. cherry blossoms and officials will announce when the blossoms will reach their peak bloom this year. this annual cherry blossom festival will reach april 11. we re going to take a break now and come back and look at our weather an good morning, a blue sky with sunshine, that should brighten your mood today, afternoon highs climbing into the mid 40s, so it is going to be chilly and a blustery northwest wind to go along with it. but it is wonderful to have the sun back. we should have more sunshine tomorrow. a bit blustery over the weekend. saturday shoumd be sunny, and maybe a litt milder on sunday. up into the mid 50s with lots of sunshine. we may get some chilly rain on tuesday and should end tuesday night. live look even after this hour, we re back up along i-270 out of german town, no lane issues just vume and sunshine was the problem earlier this morning. joe? we re going to get some insight into that, coming up. then later on, we re going to be talking about beating the blues. no matter who you are or what age you are, life will throw you curveballs. so, how do you deal with them? this morning we ll have great advice on eliminating stress and being happy at any age. that s right. plus, they re driven, they re busy and socially connected. they re the real housewives of new york city, and they re here with their dish on their third season, or the dish on their third season of catfights and drama, and there are actually two new cast members. we ll hear all about that coming up. first, you have a check of the news? in the headlines this morning, the national highway traffic safety administration is reviewing complaints from some toyota owners who say they still have problems with unintended acceleration even after their cars were recalled and repaired. toyota says it will also look into those complaints. today, another powerful earthquake, this one in southern taiwan. it was a magnitude 6.4. it damaged buildings and triggered a fire at a factory. there were some injuries. a strong aftershock jolted central chile on wednesday with a magnitude of 6.1. the death toll from saturday s massive earthquake, meanwhile, has topped 800. chile s president says it will take three or four years to rebuild. in iraq, bombings killed at least 17 people in baghdad. the attacks happened as security forces and others began casting ballots in advance of this weekend s key parliamentary elections. insurgents have repeatedly threatened to use violence to disrupt the election. today, a german court convicted four men in a foiled 2007 plot to attack u.s. targets there. they were sentenced to up to 12 years in prison. a convicted sex offender is being held without bail this morning in san diego. john gardner was charged wednesday with murdering 17-year-old chelsea king. her body was found on tuesday. president obama plans to hit the road to push for passage of health care reform. on wednesday, the president said the time for debating health care legislation is over. he wants an up or down vote in congress within the next few weeks. movie stars aren t the only ones sprucing up for sunday s academy awards ceremony. hollywood boulevard was also shut down wednesday so workers could truck in bleachers and unroll the famous red carpet that will greet the next crop of oscar winners, and al roker s going to be on that carpet there as well. that s right. meredith and i you and meredith. we ll be there bringing you everything you need to know about the oscars. you re traveling an awful lot, putting in those frequent flyer miles. that s right, we are. check of weather now. and you ll see for today, we ve got that pesky storm system in the northeast moving away. that s good news. windy conditions in the northeast. we ve also got snowy conditions through the plain states as another low pressure system moves through.rough. temperatures now climbing into the upper 30s and it s now 39 in washington, we have some sunshine back, but also a wind that s gusting around 20 miles an hour. we will see that wind occasionally throughout the day, overnight tonight and into tomorrow. we may have a few clouds developing this afternoon, tomorrow morning near 30, afternoon highs mid 40s. still a bit blustery friday. saturday should be bright and that s your latistest weather. natalie? al, thank you. now to the latest on tiger woods. people.com is reporting tiger is out of rehab and back home in florida. he s been spotted hitting golf balls in the area after spending a week in counseling with his wife, elin, in arizona. so, what i next for the golf great? jamie hayden is with people magazine and jeff gardere is a clinicalsychologist and today contributor. good morning, guys. good morning. good morning. out of rehab, reportedly. the press conference earlier this month, now he s out hitting golf balls. does it sound, j.d., like in what you re reporting, does it sound like he s tiger woods is back and on the upswing now? well, i think this is a long process. i think clearly, as you saw in that press conference, this is a man who is pretty tormented and trying to work through a lot of stuff. he is hitting golf balls, he is working through his relationship with his wife. who knows where that s going to lead, but they ve been in therapy together. you know, there are now reports that they are moving back in together. as far as we know, that s a real change in the way they ve been relating, if that is true. they certainly have been having a difficult time and have been barely speaking outside of their therapy, so. we have that picture of him there running outside near his florida home. how reunited, though, are they? i mean, they have two homes in the same area. are they living in the same house? well, we re hearing that, but that would be a real change. up until this point, they have had a pretty tense relationship and really haven t spoken a lot. since november, really. yeah. you know, they ve had some therapy sessions together. they ve obviously been doing stuff together to work through this, but when they are at home, they have been living pretty separate lives. and jeff, i mean, tiger reportedly went through that six weeks of rehab, as we know, at the pine grove treatment center in mississippi, known for treating sexual addiction, relationship addiction, other behavior problems. is six weeks, though, really enough to be cured of a sexual addiction? i think when you re talking about addiction, you never talk about cure, you talk about being in recovery. and this is something that you work with for the rest of your life. so, you have to go back to booster sessions, stay in therapy, attend 12-step programs. so, he is in recovery and doing better, but as far as a cure, again, with addictions, we just don t even use that kind of language. mm-hmm. and yo know, i think, j.d., when we talk about their relationship and where it s going from here, a lot of questions, because early on, we saw elin very much split and apart, overseas in europe, skiing, doing her thing. but now, with the reports that she may be reconciling and back, where do we see things going? is there a future there? well, listen, i mean, i think every relationship is complicated, and certainly this one is clearly very complicated and has been complicated by everything that s been, you know, said, and you know, that we know about tiger woods. so, i would expect that there will be many stages, as there would be in any relationship. they have children together, obviously. i think they both i think that they should put those children first. who knows what will happen to them ultimately. clearly, the therapy process that he talked about, he is committed to trying to make this family whole again. so, we ll have to see. what about rumblings that he may be getting back, you know, back to fitness, back to his game, you know, because jack nicklaus actually said yesterday that he believes that he s going to be back on the pga tour and that he s going to be back at the open in augusta, georgia, in april. well, i wouldn t be the masters tournament. surprised at all if that happens. certainly people we talk to say he had every intention of doing that. we ll have to see what happens. the security measures they re taking at the masters this year would seem to indicate that that would happen. it s obviously probably the best, most conducive place for him to get back into golf, and this is a guy who lives and breathes golf. he s the best golfer of all time, so i wouldn t be surprised. absolutely. i agree with j.d., and it s part of the recovery process. let s put him back in his element. it s not just about building back up emotionally, but physically, too. it s part of the holistic treatment, and i m sure that s probably been recommended by the treatment center that he was part of. if he goes back to winning, j.d., what do you perceive the public opinion will be on tiger woods? well, i think it will always be profoundly mixed. i mean, everybody appreciates what he has done as an athlete, but you know, will he come back to being the role model, spokesperson, you know, sort of sterling character that people thought he was? that s a longer process. but i think people understand that he is amazing at what he does, and i think most people having seen that press conference want him to succeed and put his life back together. the question is, is the public willing to forgive, too? well, that s a process. obviously, that s going to take time, just as recovery, as he was saying, takes time. and certainly, the public should forgive. this is a person who s shown us that he s not perfect. he s huma he makes mistakes. we all make mistakes. for the public to say we can t forgive him, it tells me that there may be something wrong with the public that they can t do something like that. all right. j.d. heyman and jeff gardere, thanks, guys, so much. thank you. coming up next, tips for finding happiness in your 30s, 40s and 50s. then later, the real housewives of new york city. they re going to give us a preview of everything from cat fights to the catwalks. but first, these messages. ht a 2010 toyota prius. i am buying a new toyota camry. brand-new 2010 toyota camry. sure, because at different ages, going through different stages of our life, we re dealing with different stresses and there are different ways you can combat it at every age. okay. so, let s start with the 30s. okay. what are the triggers that get us going and then what can you do to combat that? well, this is a time of intense stress because a lot of people are really gearing up in their careers, so they re working very hard. you know, women are often raising young children at this time or getting pregnant, and these can be very stressful times. so, it can be very overwhelming, but there are definitely some things you can do, and the first thing to look at is actually your diet. there are actually some foods that have some feel-good chemicals. tryptophan is one, that can boost serotonin in your brain and really raise your mood. turkey, chicken, salmon, about one portion every day would be a great way to elevate your mood. kind of like clean proteins. exactly. another foods you should avoid that trigger problems? well, sugar, because it can give you that rush, but soon afterwards you get a low sugar crash and that can depress your mood. then for pms, what are some of the things so, pms is one thing where a lot of women suffer it a lot during their 30s because that s when your hormone levels are really raging, and there are definitely things in your diet to avoid there. salty foods you should avoid. it can lead to a lot of bloating. exercise is also great for pms. what about some of the stresses of building a career and raising a family? so, we all are, you know, undergoing a lot of stress, men, women in their 30s. but one thing you really have to learn to do is say no. you know, you can t always please everyone. as women that s my default, no. oh, really? because for most women, their default is yes. we re trained to be sort of pleasing, and you have to choose what you re going to do. a good rule of thumb is if you re looking forward to it, say yes, but if you re dreading it, say no. and delegate. you re not the only person who can do everything. women, mothers especially, think i m the only one who can pick out my kid s dress. you know what, your husband can do it. it might not be the perfect dress, but it s a dress. as long as they re clothed, that s all that matters. exactly. and you say get a massage, too. this is great for pregnant women or women with young children. this is a time when you re not pampering yourself, but getting a massage. i don t mean spending $100 on it, but have your partner do it. it s a great way to reconnect, have some intimacy, which is also lost in the having a newborn kid phase. let s move into the 40s. what are some issues we ll be facing? well, in the 40s, again, you re dealing with a lot of problems with stress, and you know, your hormones are raging again. you want to really exercise, you know, at least 20 minutes, three times a week is very good for sleep. doing cardio. cardio exercise, exactly. it s good for sleep problems because that can also lead to depression as well. and when we hit our 40s, now a lot of women, and men, but women, too, are not only caring for their kids, who are now moving into their preteens, but they re caring for aging parents. right. so, we call this the sandwich generation because you re caring for your parents who may not be able to care for themselves, also dealing with children. it s very important at this time to take time for yourself, some alone time, even if it means getting up half an hour earlier, taking an extra long shower, going for a walk. it can really help you regroup and recenter yourself. when you re in your 40s and, you know, you ve got issues not only with your kids, you ve got your parents, but you also have your spouse. what are some of the issues you can deal with there? well, i think it s very important to focus on your relationship. it s very easy at this point, you re sort of getting in a rut, you do the same old routine. make a date night, do extra activities with your spousand prioritize them. because if y don t take care of that relationship, it s not going to just thrive on itself. right, okay. now we move into our 50s. and when it comes to the 50s, you know, you re kind of set in your ways, your career is where it should be. your kids are probably off and going. you would think this is probably the easy time. what are the stresses? well, just as you said, your kids are off. that s sort of the empty nest syndrome. for some people, that can lead to depression, actually. but you should really embrace that free time and do something new, a new hobby. there s nothing like helping other people that makes you feel good. so, maybe going for a charity or a cause, volunteering. that s a great way to decrease your stress and make you feel better. also when you reach your 50s, exercise is probably even more important than it was in your 40s. right. i mean, you really need to exercise more because your metabolism is slowing down by this point. so, now we re talking about 30 minutes every single day is a great way to keep fit and keep your mood up. what about hormone therapy, replace those hormones? sure. so, during menopause, which is happening usually during this decade, your falling estrogen levels can affect your mood, they can affect dryness in the pelvic area, your sexual pleasure. so hormone therapy is an option. there are some risks to it. you need to talk to your doctor about it. but you can also use topical hormone therapy to deal with some issues related to sex. and the good news is, in your 50s, especially for men and women, you may actually end up having a little more free time because the kids are up and running and doing their own thing. this is where you really focus on yourself. exactly. focus on yourself on exercising, getting sleep, traveling and really just enjoying yourself. and if you re like our director, about to hit 60, just give up. [ laughter ] i would never say that. never too late to give up. only kidding. dr. roshini raj, thank you so much. thank you. coming up next, it s all drama all the time. the real housewives of new york city, they re back right after these ssages. high in vitamins d, e, and b12. a good source of vitamin a and b2. plus omega 3 s. and, 25% less saturated fat than ordinary eggs. but there s one important ingredient that hasn t changed: better taste. better taste. better taste. yum! it s just the quality of the water. hard water? here in new york you have great water, i m from chicago, it s a great source, but in a lot of the country, it s not great coming in. so, it mixes with the air, when you shut the water off, the water sits inside the head here and starts to create that calcify indication, which creates the holes. see that blue tape? what s that? you ll put that around the color to be able to loosen it. i ve loosened it, but when you put a pair of pliers or channel locks here, that way you re not going to damage the finish. okay. throw it in a bucket. that s vinegar and water. you can also use what s the mix? 50/50 mix. when you pull it out, you ll scrub that to try to pull off all the calcium on this head. let it soak in there and really get inside. th that alone should improve. if not, get a new head. moen makes one, kohler makes one. about $50 is all you should spend on a shower head, and it s as simple as loosening and tightening. you said earlier, also, if you like a lot of power, maybe a growe? that s a great one, too, absolutely. now, you are just raving about this. please pay attention. this is going to change your life. put that in coat because that s going to change your life. okay. thank you very much. this is the number one reason your drain is clogged, everybody, because you have hair in there. well, maybe not my drain. okay, maybe not you. hey, he s here all weekend. so, in the tub or vanity, underneath that top, all it is, where are you? this is a wire with a little piece of hook loop othe end. like a velcro. like a velcro. you re going to work it into the drain and work around, go around like this. you re going to grab hair inside the drain, now, we don t have any hair in this drain. no, we don t. and when we pull this out, you re going to be amazed and disgusted at the same time. at the same time! $5 for $5, change your life. right. amazed and disgusted. it s one of those things, why didn t i invent? because it gets all the hair out. it s terrific. now, our granite countertops. yes. now, this is a wonderful feature to have inside your home, but people do a nice job of cleaning them, keeping them clean. make sure you re using the right products for that. but it s very important, al, that these get sealed. in other words, the coating wears off after a while? it does, because remember, all granite, natural stone is a porous material. so you know, things can get inside there, grape juice, wine. if you do any cooking on there, you nee to make sure that once you clean it you re going to caulk any joints. this is a ge product, just so you know. i should mention that ge happens to be the parent company of nbc, for now. for now. so, these are caulk yeah. so, we give them a little prop. maybe the price will go up. anyway, if you take this caulk singles, it s like a juice box of caulk, and what happens is you pull this off and any places you have there, you squeeze it out. right. let that dry overnight. okay. then, a lot of different sealers on the market. you should only spend about $15 on sealer, as we learned. you spray this on. right. and all you do is you spray it and you let it soak in. that s it? that s it. now, what s going to happen is as you work along this, the edges of the countertop are going to dry first. once you see that start to begin, you re going to do another coat. okay. leave for a couple of hours. you ve just sealed your countertops. this should last 18 months. that s great. you won t be amazed and disgusted at the same time. you ll just be amazed. there you go. and you did it all in 15 minutes. in 15 minutes. lou manfredini, thank you so much. coming up, a new take on a latin american classic, empanadas in today s kitchen. fiber one i m looking for some fiber. this bar is an excellent source of fiber. there s no fiber in this. it tastes too good. they have 35% of your daily value. oh, samples. mmm. fiber one. cardboard no. delicious yes. love to see kids spirits shine. superstar and mom, martina mcbride and sunnyd shine on sunny taste. sunny spirit. sunny d. can you believe how fast kids grow these days? of course, i believed of the god of islam and islam as an ideology and jihad as a way to bring humanity justice. and today, i m totally fighting this belief and this ideology. that s right. you repudiated islam at the age of 18. you were arrested by israeli security forces on weapons charges. and while in prison, you write that you became disillusioned with hamas, and thus began this transformation process. what happened while you were there? what changed you? yeah. hamas was torturing hamas members, trying to figure out who s giving information to the israeli intelligence, and many victims were tortured and killed, and this opened many questions in my head, and the transformation process is long. that s why i had to write the son of hamas, but that was the beginning when i started to question. you say while you were in prison, you say you were invited to begin spying for the israeli intelligence organization shimbet. we can t validate that, but others have. why did you say yes, though? yeah, i said yes because i had a plan to infiltrate the shimbet. i wasn t trying to help them. i wasrying to attack them from inside. that was my goal. i end up friends with them and working together to stop killing after i became a christian. what is it you learned from them that changed you, though? about the israeli way and what was different in the conflict, in the way they handled it? everything that i learned about the shimbet and the israeli intelligence from the streets, from my society, was absolutely wrong. this is why my people are shocked and they cannot believe that. it s an organization, yes, they are responsible for killing people, assassinating some terrorists, but most of the time, their main goal is to stop killing and save people s lives. so, as you were a spy for shimbet, as you say, though, you continued at your father s side going to hamas meetings, even taking his notes. you were considered a protege of your father s, very highly trusted within hamas, but yet, you passed these notes along to shinbet. how were you able to get along how were you able to do this, first of all, and how conflicted were you, knowing that you re turning against your own father? i wasn t conflicted. first of all, i saved my father s li. and not only i worked with the shinbet to save israeli lives, we also saved many palestinian lives, many palestinian leaders lives. today they are in prison. they re supposed to be killed. and to me, i wasn t conflicted because i believed in what i was doing. if i had information or access to any type of information to pass this information to the shinbet or the israeli government to be able to stop killing children, women, lots of people who had nothing to . they were going to their works and the suicide bomber is supposed to take the bus and blow everything up. your father is in prison, meanwhile, and this week he disowned you. he, meanwhile, has said in a statement that you were blackmailed by israeli authorities and you had no access to hamas secrets, and hamas has said that your story is a lie. how do you respond to that? and tell me more about what is happening with your relationship with your father, your family. yeah. unfortunately, he disowned me and he had no other option. now i cannot talk to my mother, even, and i cannot talk to my sisters. this is how his god unskin his humanity. it s not my father s heart. i love him and i know that he loves me, but it s his god. now, about access to secrets of hamas, i wasn t a member of hamas, they re right. i agree with them and i didn t have access to their secrets because they didn t know how we got the information, and i m not going to give hamas a free gift how we spied on them, but i say that we went deep to the bones and we got most important information. i know about hamas more than its leaders know about the organization. why put yourself at risk, because putting this book out there has put you at great risk, your life at risk. why do this? my life is at risk all the time. and what i say, this is all this risk and sacrifice, losing my family, this is a small gift to the mothers of the victims of the palestinian/israeli conflict on both sides. all right. well, the book is certainly intriguing. it s called the son of hamas. this morning in today s kitchen, hot chef daisy martinez. she wants us to stuff it. we re making empanadas. daisy is the host of diva daisy on the food network and author of daisy morning, noon and night: bringing your family together with everyday latin dishes. daisy, good morning! good morning, al. thank you for having me back. always glad to have you here. every year your family travels to a different latin american country. where did you go this year? buenos aires. caramelized onions, blue cheese empanada. what can be bad? no problem with me. so, i slow cook these. this is a spanish blue cheese could you use other kind? you can use regular blue crumbs. i want you to try this recipe. so put this in here? go ahead. go in there. we re going toprinkle parsley and a little sherry vinegar. give that a mix. okay. watch the salt because of the blue cheese, you know? right. so, you ve got the sweet of the caramelized onion. pepper. and kind of the tangy of the blue cheese. the salty and the blue cheese, green for freshness, and over here i have some shrimp. want to take this over here? okay, i m taking this over here. meantime, i ll make the second filling. i have rock shrimp. are we coming up on the end of the rock shrimp season? so regular fresh or frozen? absolutely. absolutely. it has a little bit of you know me and my heat. right. i m going to add some blanched tomato that s been seeded and peeled. we ll add that in there for sweetness and scallions for a green punch and some crunch. we like that. right? and then i m going to give you a lesson in empanada making. what isn t better with bacon? everything s better with bacon. everything is better with bacon. so, we re going to go ahead more bacon is better with bacon. so, this is already cooked bacon. i rendered the bacon, made it nice and crisp [ laughter ] come over here. i ll give you a lesson. okay. these are these are already bought. these are premade discs that you can buy. if you re feeling adventurous, you can make your own empanada dough. that s always fine. so, you have your disc and we re going to wet down the edge, right? and to that you re going to add about a nice tablespoon of that filling. okay. i m going to add a tablespoon of this filling. okay. make sure i get e shrimp and bacon in there for al. right. and we re going to put it right in the center. in the center, okay. a little then we re going to fold it over. and just make the ends meet. just and i m going to show you two different ways to make your empanadas. you could do a simple my mom loves to do it like this, just take a fork uh huh, and crimp it? yeah. then i m going to do a little pleat over here. just folding and folding and folding and folding. i olympic your mlike your mo. then we re going to head over and i m going to fry a couple for you. what do you say to that? good idea. you re still going through lding and folding and i m done! i m ready to put it in the hot oil! okay. any time, daisy! tick-tock, baby. we re going to drop them into a bubbling, 375-400 oven. and you ve got a candy thermometer. yeah, because you don t want the oil to be too cold. then it sits and it soaks. you want nice, bubbly, crispy empanadas. you try. this is the shrimp, this is the blue cheese. tell me what you think. they do taste much better. i bake those for a healthier version. you can put the egg yolk on the top. you can brush the egg and bake it. people are afraid of fried. i think once in a while fried is okay. what do you think? and it s nice and flaky, caramelized onion. just like my grandmother used to make them. i love that. daisy martinez, thank you very much. you re welcome. coming up? hoda and kathie lee get the guyso tell all. our time right now is 9:56, look at the forecast coming up on this thursday, march 4, 2010. if you re planning on checking out the cherry ossoms, officials will let you know when the cherry blossoms will be in full bloom. the average peak bloom date is april 4, this year s festival will run from march 27 until april 11. now if you ll look at that forecast for today, here s tom kiron. welcome sunshine may coax those blossoms a little bit today. it is blustery and chilly but there is a feeling of spring out there on this thursday morning. a blustery northwest winds this afternoon, overnight tonight and into tomorrow. the winds diminishes over the weekend and should be a bit warmer too. we ll take a live look on the topside of the beltway, crews should be patching those potholes. if you are planning to travel the belt way south of town, outer loop is fine, but the inner loop at telegraph road, you may see some interrupt. there are some questions real officials would never ask, captions paid for by nbc-universal television hey, everybody. we re so glad you re with us. it s the 4th of march. and around here it s thirst day. how are you doing, honey?
