Today Matthews Town Council could vote on a resolution to split from the Charlotte Mecklenburg school district. The move comes as the School Board Considers changes to Student Assignment. Mint hill is also considering a similar resolution. Town leaders want to make sure opportunity to stay in neighborhood schools they say that would create stability and predictability for parents. Leaders in huntersville, cornelius and davidson all voted and passed a resolution for Student Assignment just last week those three resolutions ask cms leaders to make sure every student has a seat in their schools. More than 27,000 people responded to a Student Assignment survey. Last week the results outlined the top three concerns. 80 said School Staffing is most important, 75 said school environment, 67 said location and how close schools were to home. Today people in Cleveland County could hear about the coal ash risk for the Rogers Energy complex. The state department of Environmental Quality ranked the coal ash basins at that plan as low priority. That means they have to be closed by the year 2029. It is part of precautions after the spill in the dan river two years ago. Tonights meeting is at 6 00 at Boiling Springs town hall. The state is Holding Public meetings in each county where duke has a coal ash pond. Last month was Gaston County. The steam plant has been classify as a high priority site, which means the coal ash has to be removed by 2019. Today the new unc system president will visit unc charlotte. Right now winthrop undergraduates pay the third highest in state costs for a Public University in South Carolina and more than 27,000. Union county Law Enforcement is trying to deal with rising heroin abuse and overdoses in the county. Our partners at the enquirer journal report an uptick of heroin abuse in the area started two years ago. Last week the Sheriffs Office was called to five heroin overdoses. One was deadly. Health and Human Services announced North Carolina will get nearly 2. 5 million in grants to help treat prescription abuse and the it will go to seven Health Centers in the state in hopes of improving and expanding Substance Abuse services. Last week the government announced it is holding a cant test to create a mobile app for patients hooked on opioids and heroin. 30,000 will be awarded in prizes for the winning app prototypes. Officials hope the apps can quickly connect patients to counseling and treatment options. Eyewitness News ReporterBritney Johnson is on scene for us live. What are investigators telling you now . Reporter i just spoke with investigators within the last 30 seconds. They are telling me this scene behind us at tryon square is one of multiple scenes that may be connected to a shooting here. We have learned there is a club here, a social club they tell us is open late into the evening and people are saying this parking lot was packed with people who were at a party in this area when that shooting happened. Officers tell us this started with a call for an Armed Robbery, but then they learned there was a shooting victim who away from here. He asked people to call 911 for him, he had been shot in the legs. That is the person who has gone to the loss. Hospital. And then police are focusing a lot of attention here in the centers. There are markings for shell casings, also shattered glass glass. Someone else showed up with their car that had been shot into. Those people took their car to Police Headquarters to get help with that shooting investigation. So again, multiple pieces, multiple factors, all leading police back to this area here at tryon square. They believe it was full of people, and so far they know of one person who has been taken to the hospital with the gunshot wounds to the legs. Multiple police cars have showed up since we have been here, so this investigation has continued to expand. We are going to work to get they are working to get the very basic facts together right now, lots going on right now at tryon square, well continue bringing updates as they develop. In the last 15 minutes the mother of one passenger told our sister station in wichita her daughter, a College Student was helping out of a window going 75 Miles Per Hour. It derailed in cimarron. You can look at the map to give you an idea, it was halfway on its trip near wichita. The passengers who were not hurt were taken it a nearby rec center. As folks are gathering there and telegot alternate transportation to get to their final destination. Because this happened so far from a major see it is taking quite awhile to get video. We will be calling attorney nick mackey today, after a judge threw out a mans 30year prison sentence and conviction because he says mackey slept during the trial. The appellate judge in virginia overturned the case friday, one 30 minutes at least. Mackey ran for Mecklenburg County sheriff in 2007, he won the race but the decision was overturned. He pleaded guilty to a contempt of court charge after failing to show up for a clients trial in 2007. We have called the number list today mackeys law office but have not heard back. We have dense fog advisories for the mountains the foothills along the i40 corridor. It is tough to see on some of those roads, so take it slow and make sure to use your low beams. Not dealing with any showers right now, fog is the only problem. But going through the day, we are going to keep the threat for storms. Im tracking the large system out to the west. More than 300 miles west of the charlotte area. That is going to make a run our direction later today. Not going to get here until tonight though. But still you want to make sure to time it all out for you on futurecast, clouds, fog early on will start to lift by 9 00 or 10 00. Seeing a mix of sun and clouds, that is going to warm us up quickly again it had. Toward 5 00, still could be dealing with wet roads for the evening drive. Toward 8 00, 9 00 tracking downpours that will be pushing through, some of these will be strong, possibly severe storms, so keep an eye on the skies later tonight. That clears out quickly though and heading through the overnight hours, more of a clearing could see lingering showers in the mountains. So taking a look at our threat tracker for this evening, our main concerns some of these isolated storms will contain very heavy rainfall, making it tough to drive on the roads.
