Dc police say it all happened throw minutes when man with a weapon attacked the driver on j street before getting behind the wheel of that bus, and then driving it just a few blocks to a crown steaks where the worker was killed. At the time of the hijacking bus was filled with passengers. Paul wagner joins us live from the scene tonight with the story. Paul . Scary day . Sarah, laura, you can imagine how frightening it must have been for the passengers on board when the man got on to the bus, pulled a weapon, attacked the driver, through the driver off the bus, then got behind the wheel. And drove it just couple of blocks to this crown station here, at the intersection of burrows and minnesota northeast, thats where he hit the worker taking out the trash. The man didnt have a chance, standing near this dumpster when police say the suspect who hijacked the bus drove it across the crown lot and hit him. Horace johnson heard the crash from his auto repa nextdoor. And then saw police try to take the man into custody. See in the driver seat, and the police, them telling put his hands up. And he would put the hands up, so then tell him put the hands up. Drag him out the bus. And then he was resisting. So they handcuffed him and hes gone. Suspect, you know, a periods to me to be very distraut, and violent, and violent and resisting the officers when they took him off the bus. The man who was hit, described as a worker at crown, was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Chief cathy lanier says the suspect hijacked a bus, just a few blocks away, on j street northeast. He remains standing up around the driver of the bus, and does not take a seat. The bus proceeds to the next stop about 90 seconds, when the dust comes to the stop, 800 block of kenilworth, the suspect then driver. All the passengers flea from the bus immediately when they see the attack. Police later say the suspect through the driver off the u6 bus, and then hopped in the drivers seat, steering it underneath 295, kenilworth avenue and into the crown lot. Dc and Metro Transit Police were alerted to the danger after the driver was able to send a message as he was in trouble. It is a bizarre incident, very uncharacteristic for someone to, you know, try and take a bus, attack a bus driver, as we say the whole incident occurred in less than three minutes. The officers did a great job, and bringing the suspect into custody, and not being injured, because he was armed with a weapon. Dc police at this hour have not released the name of the suspect, or the person who was killed. Now, all day long matt ackland, wore working the store which me, and has more on the store. I this has shaken up a lot of people. In fact, i lk office her on patrol here. She said she has seen a lot of crimes, heard a lot of crimes, but this one really surprised her today. We also talked to a man who was right in this area, just moments before this crash happened. He says he had just talked to the victim, walk away, and then the bus came barreling through. I had just spoke to him. Just moments before the bus came through the gas station parking lot, this man, who asked us not to show his face, says he spoke to the victim. The guy that got hit just spoke to me, i told him have a good day, see you later on. Next thing i look up, i seen the bus coming through the gas station. I didnt hear anything, i just heard the bus jam on brakes. This man who works nextdoor didnt see the accident take place, but, saw police rush in to take the suspect into custody. People running, hollering, it was just those who knew him say the victim helped clean up gas stations in the morning, what we were told he was doing before he was hit. Next thing he look up, i see you later on. He went one way, i went the other way. That was it. He was gone. Not too long afterwards we noticed there was some people who apparently new the victim. They were very distraut, many of them crying, but they held up their hands understandably and said that they didnt want to talk at this point. Live in northeast, matt ackland, fox5 local news. One of the disturbing parts of this story is after the bus was hijacked, and the pedestrian was hit, people near the accident scene started pulling out their cell phones instead of helping the victim. Unbelievable. Fox5s jim joins with us that part of the story, jim, i mean, just un believable. Really is amazing, maybe indicative of the times were living, outrage definitely palpable, we talk about this individual joe here. Look, be aware, weve blurred, obscured what happened here. Really, it is a sad situation. But it is really a wake happened. So, again, if you are disturbed turn away for just a moment. This was posted on twitter by woman named lanel. We reached out to get her side of the story. Look that the guy. This guy is going up over that persons body, and taking pictures. Nobodys reaching out to help people. And again, maybe it is indicative of the times were living in, we dont know why this person, think about it, why would a human being what incentive is thereto take a picture of somebody like this and do that . We reached out for her side of the story. She declined the offer. In fact she didnt get back to us, she later pulled this video down, but get a sense of what happened there in northeast today. Once again, we dont know any other circumstances, as to why this picture was taken out there, and every now and then people ask us when we are out in the field as reporters, as journalists, why were taking pictures of certain trust us, we are human beings, too, we see things like this, we dont do this sort of thing, neither should you. Back to you. For sure. Thanks, jim. Tonight a skating report is out on metro f Transportation Safety board on the deadly smoke incident last year that killed an alexandria woman. After more than a year the ntsb has found the cause of the smoke was a prolonged electrical short circuit, which resulted from metros ineffective maintenance. Even moral large willing, ntsb investigators say since metro didnt have enough smoke detectors in the tunnels it, would send trains filled with passengers into tunnels to look for signs of smoke. Foxs Tom Fitzgerald live today and this report, tom, drew real sharp words from the safety board members. Boy, sure did. You know, for six hours this went on today. They talked about maintenance. They talked about trending. They talked about repairs, they talked about policies. But in this hearing they use words you dont normally hear from a ntsb ford member. Words like reprehensible, and disturbing. Now, their finding was the probable cause of the lamb fat plazas an electrical short circuit made worse by an ineffective inspection and Maintenance Program on the part of metro. There were 33 recommendations, and a long list of actions, and inaction cents, that metro took in response to that january 2015 incident, but remember, this was not just a regulatory hearg. In this was life and death. Sixtyone year old carol glover lost her life because of that train incident, on board that train she was sitting on 302 was another woman, a woman named doctor lillian pits. Now, she was listening to all of this today, and finally had to get up and walk out that far hearing room. She said at one point it just became too emotional to listen to. So many people were affected, i can recall it like yesterday, like it was yesterday, fresh in my mind. It is something i would not want anyone to experience, and i hope that we all, all of the victims, all of us, can pull through this ankle continue on with our lives with our family. Well the probable cause of this 2015 incident is one thats by now familiar to metro passengers. An electrical connector like this one became corroded from Constant Water leaks. Ntsb says prolonged electrical shortage filled the last with smoke today for the first time ntsb also released video from the same type of fire, back in february, at the Mcpherson Square station. That led to the one day metro safety shutdown. Again, there was a long list of findings and recommendations here, 33 in all, including malfunctioning smoke v communication problems, massive ones that prevented First Responders from talking to each other, and at one point sending them down the wrong tunnel while they were looking for the train. The Incident Commander we were told today was not properly trained on dc fire protocols in handling the plaza incident. Furthermore, one of the most eyeopening revelations today was a bombshell. Ntsb says metro allowed passenger trains to be used to spot and report smoke in the tunnels to make up for a lack of smoke detectors in the system. After this hearing, an intense ntsb chairman and metro general manager spoke out reassuring passengers that they are now taking safety seriously at metro. Safety oversight, has not changed adequately. As a result, the specific hazards that we will consider today were and persist. Did not adequately mitigate the presence of water in tunnels despite the role that watt kerr play in the type of accident that we will hear about today. It reinforces obviously what ive been trying to do since day one here which is begin to change in the culture, we have to get the infrastructure cracked, we have to get the policies right, and we have to get the meme right. And thats what ive been trying to do since day one, and i will continue to do it. At the ends of this hearing today there was good bit of confusion about that revelation, about passenger trains, being used to spot smoke. Metro tweeted out at one point that it does not use passenger trains to shot smoke. We asked are they refuting the ntsbs finding as a recommendation . We were told later, by a spokesperson here, in fact, it is not metros policy to use passenger trains to spot smoke. We are still waiting right now for a clarification about exactly what that tweet were live tonight, Tom Fitzgerald, fox5 local news. Developing in the district tonight police need your help to track down three men who robbed a mcdonalds, take a look at this video, it happened about 3 15 a. M. Saturday on i street southeast. Police say the suspects drove up to the drivethru window, hopped out of their car with guns, and attacked that worker at the drivethru window. They jumped through the window, robbed the place, and then took off. If you have any information that could help police in this investigation, please do give them a call. Coming up a health alert that may be hard to digest. A new Study Reveals that the most common finger food given to babies are actually choking hazards. And a wakeup call for insomniacs. What new guidelines recommends to help you catch some zs instead of taking those sleeping pills. Hey, mike . Reporter scientists theyve discovered new what exactly have they discovered . Well, well have full details coming up right after the break. Stick with us, well be right back. Knows products tested did not meet the safety guidelines set by the American Academy of pediatrics. Gerber graduates first and veggie pickups played the grade. Cheerios, and gerber graduates plus also got high marks for dissolving quickly. The ideal first finger foods for babies are soft, easy to swallow, and cut into small pieces. New guidelines say therapy not sleeping pills should be your first choice in treating insomnia. Everybody wants that quick fix though, thats a problem. The recommendations come from the American College of physicians, it says Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or cbt can be effective for people who cant sleep and doesnt carry the side effect every medication, group says the cb. It doesnt work, then doctors should consider sleeping pills. The problem is, cb. It is not always covered by insurance and it can be tough to find Health Workers trained to deliver that they are. I i find if you get into a pattern . Im sleeping well, going to bed at the same time at night, it does help. Tough these days, for sure, though. International team of scientists including members from nausea, are making some breathtaking news tonight. Yes, this is really incredible. Members have discovered more planets outside are our solar system. Mike thomas is here now with the details on that, mike, pretty cool. Laura, it is absolutely fascinating. Space is always something thats fascinated me, and i think that this is something that weve all done at the time, asking the question, you know, are we alone out here . Scientists have been fixated when trying to answer that very question for years. And actually, back on january 9th, 1992, scientists discovered the very first pair of ex owe planets, thats planets outside of our own solar system. Since that time, planets have actually been found, and with 100 billion stars, estimated to be in our own any can i way galaxy, nasa estimates that there could be over 100 billion other planets out there, as well. Now, monday brought discovery of three more. But the International Team of scientists that announced this discovery says that these three planet are special, and this is because they fall in whats known as an and recall zone. This is a special zone around a parent star where temperatures are just right enough that liquid water could potentially exist on the surface of these planet. The planets are also believed to be similar in size to both earth and venus, and what you are seeing on your screen right now is actually artist renditions of what these planets could potentially look like, obviously we do not know that just from the great distances involved. Now, before scenes from independence day, the et stars start running through head, just realize that because a planet falls into the habitable zone doesnt necessarily mean life or even water for that matter exists on that planet. The Biggest Issue of course is distance. The planets are located, these new planets, that is, 40 light years away from earth. That means, that if you turned on, say, really bright light, could potentially see there, it would take 40 years before anyone on those planets could see those lights. Given Current Space travel technology, a Space Shuttle traveling from earth to these planets would take over 1. 5 million years to arrive. And one of the things that fascinates me so much, laura, sarah, about space, when you look newspaper it, youre actually looking back into time capsule. Since sound waves travel at the speed of light, if we go back in time, 40 years from now, if the people on these planets had radio dials, were able to tune into what earth was listening to 40 years ago, number one song that year, real love song. Takes you back little bit. So fast naturing. My gosh. I love it. More plan. The very cool discovery. Yes, i love this. Thats great. Thanks, mike.
