Most of them sented here around hammonton, new jersey, but heard over many hundreds of miles. Well tonight the military saying were sorry. What is this . They were the booms. Like the ground was like shaking like an earthquake. Reporter heard around garden state. Actually rattled the windows. Stripped the lamb shook the lamps. It was bad. It was scary. Like boom, boom. Reporter these kids in brigantine were at school and mom was at the store when she heard the booms. It shook and it made a noise like a quick series of boom, boom, boom. Then it stopped and probably five minutes later another one. Reporter mysterious afternoon tremors were so strong they shattered a glass door at the cape may courthouse home of colleen green. Her threeyearold son leo was inches away. Next thing you know we heard smash and him screaming mommy, mommy and he had a little bit of glass on him. Reporter calls to 911 dispatch centers lit up across the state. Many thinking there was an earthquake. Even the Brigantine Police chief felt it. It was very fast. A couple of seconds. Reporter according to the navy, an f35c super sonic jet from Naval Air Station paw tucks sin river in maryland was on routine test flight when the jet broke the sound barrier cruising more than 760 miles an hour over the skies of new jersey. Spokesman tells us the sonic booms are not normally felt on land. We do try and minimize the possibility for sonic booms to propagate to the shore but occasionally the direction aircraft are traveling or due to weather conditions those noises do end up proper gating farther or differently than we intend. Reporter and the pentagon telling us tonight that the military actually flies this very test pattern up and down the east coast with fighter jets almost every day. Thats pretty interest wagon chris just said when you have colder air, the sound travels a little bit slower so the mains dont have to go as fast to break the sound barrier. So pretty interesting tidbit weather wise. U. S. Geological survey did report about nine sonic booms with this. So thats pretty incredible. When you look at this and you want to consider why was it so intense today, we did have an inversion. That means cold dense air was at the surface with warm air a loft. What that tends to do is the sound gets trapped in that cold dense air near the surface of the earth, and it gets to spread horizontally so that sound gets spread out and kind of smooshed horizontally thats why it traveled so far so many hundreds of miles because of what we call a temperature inversion. The sound was trapped at the surface and traveled pretty far this morning and this afternoon. Right now, were looking at very quite conditions in the atmosphere but still cold. 28 in the poconos. 35 in philadelphia. And 29 degrees in millville. We will have a refreeze overnight as temperatures fall between 21 and 28 degrees. So anything that looks shiny or wet will be ice. So please out watch out fort sidewalks, the steps, the shoulders even the overpasses some are slick much the next thing we have to be concerned with is this.
