This all began as you heard just after 7 00 this morning as republicans were actually wrapping up practice ahead of tomorrows congressional softball game. Heres what we know right now. Gunman arrived at the republican softball practice field around 7 00 this morning. Police say he was prepared way lost ammo when he opened fire. Word started leaking out early this morning four people had been shot including congressman Steve Scalise apparently they were all targeted at baseball practice in a washington, d. C. Suburb. [ gunfire ] reporter the shots rang out as republicans were finishing their practice for the annual congressional baseball game. Leaving four people injured. Two Capitol Police officers, a congressional aid and congressman scalise the House Majority whip. Im shaken up. Um, my colleagues were targeted today by somebody that wanted to kill them. Called my wife and my children told them i love you. And dad is okay. Reporter the shooter is also dead. Hes been identified as 66yearold james t. Hodgkinson of bellville, illinois. A self described democratic socialist and former Bernie Sanders campaign volunteer. Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society and i condemn this action in the strongest possible terms. Reporter that zen sent many echoed by President Trump as well calling on lawmakers to put politics aside today. Everyone who serves in our nations capitol is here because above all they love our country. Well the republican congressman represents louisianas first district. That stretches from the outskirts of new orleans to the bayous. He has served in Congress Since 2008. In 2014, he was elected to serve as the republican whip one of the leadership positions in the party. Scalise is married with two children. Congressman fat trick meehan represents pennsylvanias seventh Congressional District thon republican softball team. Meehan actually serves as the teams number one relief pitcher and says one of his colleagues from South Carolina actually spoke to the shooter and congressman meehan joins us live from washington, d. Yeah, thats jeff duncan from South Carolina as he was exiting the field this morning, a guy came up to him and asked him whether this was the congress sean team in which team was it and he said republicans and they moved on to their car only to hear the news report just a few minutes later and jeff told me that he thought he had spoken to the guy who was the shooter and when the news publish the picture he said that was definitely him. Congressman, were thankful that you and your colleagues are as safe as possible tonight. We understand that a lot of times you the pictures do the batting practice by that third base dug out which is where the shooter was today. But today nobody was there. Yeah, thank you for your kind words and sentiments, and what the pitchers, we will throw on a bit of a schedule but being that the game is tomorrow, we sat with the coach yesterday and everybody went through their routine. So that today there was no need to be at practice and i scheduled another breakfast for the morning. A gunman shot four people at a gop baseball practice including a congressman who remains in Critical Condition at this hour. More than 200 firefighters balanced those flames throughout the night. In west land North Kensington district. Dozen of people are injured and family and friends are still trying to find people who are missing. The citys mayor says hes got a lot of questions about the construction. A firm hired to refurbish the building last year says its work met all required codes and regulations but that doesnt make it ease your for those who watched in horror. Charges havcharges have beed against a delaware man in connection to that shooting of a sixyearold wilmington boy last week. Chelsea outlaw was charged with attempted murder recent lated offenses but tonight police say those charges are dismissed after developing some new leads in the case. Sixyearold gentleman sean banner remains in Critical Condition after someone shot him in the head while he sat in car on june 6th. The boys mother was shot in the arm. New information tonight in a center city crash that injured two people walking on sidewalk yesterday. One of them a 76yearold man has died. The second has an injured leg. Just before noon police say a woman driving a van ran into an suv on jfk boulevard, that van also slammed into a newsstand pushing it into those two people who were on the sidewalk. The man in the newsstand is not hurt badly. Both drivers are okay. The woman who crashed her van does not face charges. Philadelphia soda tax isnt going anywhere. At least for now.
