With the National Debate over the use of deadly force by police growing some Philadelphia Police officers are wearing body cameras. A small group is trying out the cameras in a test program. Fox 29s Chris Oconnell is live now in north philadelphia. Chris . Reporter iain, if you live in the 22nd district here in north philadelphia, theres a chance you may appear on camera in police show up into your neighborhood. About 30 officers here in the 22nd are now using body cameras. Its part of a Pilot Test Program that police brass say will become a Permanent Program in the coming years here in philadelphia. Take look. These are the models they showed off today for the first time. The department testing out six different cameras in the next six months. Theyll choose one of these technologists. Theyll come up with a policy on how these cameras are used. Now, police say the use of these cameras its a step towards more transparency within the Department Also Building Trust within the community. We talked to some officers usi them now. Theyre volunteering to wear them so far they say the response has been positive. So far so good. We havent had any occurrences where it posed a problem. Its been pretty cut and dry. Its been beneficial. So far okay. Mixed emotions. Some people like it. Other people civilians dont like it. Reporter now Police Commissioner Charles Ramsay a big advocate of body cameras is hoping to have one of these cameras on every officer in the city in the coming years. Cost is going to be big concern. Just how are citizens taking this news . Well talk to some of them at a Community Meeting here in north philadelphia. Investigators at the bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms are at the West Oak Lane home where a philadelphia firefighter died. Joyce craig was battling a fire at the row home tuesday morning. Investigators havent yet figured out how she died or what started that fire. Funeral services for craig are on saturday. A judge has convicted Raphael Jones in the murder of Philadelphia Police officer moses walker. Jones shot and killed walker during a robbery just after the officer got off duty in august of 2012. A codefendant who plead guilty to third degree murder testified against jones. Camera caught both men during the crime. Jones waived his right to a jury trial so he could avoid the Death Penalty his sentencing is in march. New developments in a story we first brought you yesterday. Police released video showing an Armed Robbery in the Oxford Circle section of philadelphia. Cops say the suspects pulled a gun and robbed two guys of thousands of dollars. In a sad twist, police say the robber also stole one of the mens passports right before he planned to travel overseas for his mothers funeral. Victimizing a young man and his friend headed to china for his mothers funeral. Between six and 7,000 United States currency in that bag. And captured on surveillance cameras as the victim came to his friends home to catch ride to the airport as he stood on the front steps the gunmen made their move. They stole cash, chinese currency and ipad and his passport. Unfathomable it could happen right here. Here you are, youre trying to get back home for a funeral and you get robbed and all your money is taken. Gunmen faced both men from the home with guns to their head and hands in the air. Neighbors a woke to find Police Searching the air for the suspects. They consoled the victim and worried about their own safety. Investigators hope the images might click with someone who may know the men. Neighbors on large street are worried this could happen again. Really scary. Police say as he was taking stuff out from the house the homeowner returned so he took off and police are now looking for him. Happening now, the search for shane montgomery. Surveillance video has police concentrating on the Schuylkill River for any sign of the missing college student. Shane disappeared after leaving a bar in manayunk early thanksgiving morning. Reporter he used a long bamboo pole left behind by previous searchers to comb the canal and river near kildares to see if he could turn up anything. Including this woman who claims to psychic abilities. She says she was drawn here to the rivers edge. Police now focusing on the schuylkill after Surveillance Video from november 27th shows shane walking west on main street after leaving kildares just before 2 00 a. M. It captures shane crossing a canal foot bridge into this parking lot along the river and vanishing without a trace. We didnt type anything. We didnt find anything of shanes at all.
