Former Virginia Governor Bob Mcdonnell and his wife are facing federal charges in a richmond courtroom later today. The couple was indicted earlier this week accused of accepting illegal gifts. Its a 14 count indictment stemming from their relationship with a rich virginia businessman and it alleges fraud of a public official, false statements and obstruction. Mcdonnell says he and his wife are innocent of the charges and also says the federal prosecutors stretched to law in order to bring the indictment and he says hes no different than any other governor. But attorney general eric holder is fighting back against the claims by governor mcdonnell. He said yesterday its not true. Its not a question of overreaching. What we did that would bring the charge bring charges that i think are commensurate with the conduct that is alleged. Ultimately therell be a trial. And we will present you know more fulsome way what we think the defendants did in that matter. But i really reject the notion that this is overreaching on the part of the government. The mcdonnells are accused of accepting illegal gifts including designer clothes, a rolex watch, golf clubs and iphones. The governor admits accepting those gifts but denies doing any political favors in exchange for them. A frightening flashback at Columbine High School in colorado yesterday. Reporter starting this fall, two of these blimps will bloat at 10,000 float at 10,000 feet over the armys Aberdeen Proving Ground in maryland in an attempt to develop defense against Cruise Missiles. Essentially low flying unmanned aircraft. And other countries like iran are developing them. As it stands today we have practically zero capability to detects it much less defend against it one military officer said of the Cruise Missile threat. They carry radars that can search for hundreds of miles to detect the launch of a Cruise Missile and relay the data to interceptor missiles. But those same blimps can also be outfitted with radars capable of tracking vehicles on the ground. And with cameras that can watch people. Much like blimps already do at u. S. Bases in afghanistan and along the border with mexico. That would give government the ability to follow american citizens as they go about their daily lives. Officials insist they have no plans to put cameras on the blimps but the aclu points out theres no law against it. Right now, there are no rules. Theres nothing that bars us from having high powered cameras monitoring our every public movement. Now the blimps are Old Fashioned technology but this is a modern day dilemma much like the controversy over nsa eavesdropping. Government efforts to make americans safer also have the potential to invade their privacy.
