Captioning sponsored by cbs this is the cbs evening news with scott pelley. Pelley good evening. The nfl revealed today that the footballs for the a. F. C. Championship were all checked by officials before the game and found to be legal, but after that check, something happened to the balls owned by the new england patriots. In a Statement Today the nfl confirmed that during the game those balls were found to be underinflated, which can make them easier to grip. The patriots crushed the Indianapolis Colts and are headed to the super bowl. Anna werner is following this. Reporter the nfl may not know how those balls got on the field, but they were tossed out at halftime. All secondhalf game balls were checked at the end of the game and remained in compliance. League rules stipulate that each Team Provides 12 footballs before each game. The nfls investigation is squarely focused on the ones the patriots provided. The nfl has hired both a law firm and an Investigative Firm that it said has sophisticated forensic expertise to assist in reviewing electronic and video information. Its very serious. This is a very serious topic. Reporter investigators have conducted 40 interviews but reportedly none with tom brady or any players for that matter. A Players Union representative would have to be present for any interviews. Quarterbacks are finicky. Reporter rick zolak is a former backup quarterback for the patriots in the 90s. He hosts a radio show in boston. As backup he would prepare footballs for the starting quarterback. Wed take that and wed rub it. Wed have like a shoe polish brush or scrub brush. We would deflate it some because you want it more oblong so you could cut the ends and spin it through the air. Reporter the nfl acknowledged that rules may have been violated that would harm the integrity of the game. Its a brand that made 9. 5 billion in 2013 a is charges 4. 5 million for every 30second super bowl commercial. Joe favorito is a sports media consultant. He says so far theres no sign that this seasons bad headlines have had a negative impact on the business of professional football. If youre a big business like that, you have to listen to the fan, and probably more importantly are the brands. How are the brands reacting to what youre doing because at the end of the day brands are a reflection of society and what the fans are doing, as well. Reporter the league says it will conduct additional interviews in the days ahead scott, making it seem increasingly likely that questions about how deflated footballs got into a championship game wont be answered before the biggest game of all next sunday. Pelley and the patriots are cooperating completely. Anna, thank you very much. That Measles Outbreak that started at disneyland last month is spreading. 81 cases in 7 states now. The latest is nebraska. Most are in california where parents are allowed to choose not to have their children vaccinated. Heres ben tracy. Reporter sixmonthold livia simon has been quarantined for three weeks at her home in oakland, california. She was potentially exposed to measles at this nearby hospital by a child whose parents had refused a measles vaccine. More than 30 other children are also in home isolation in the surrounding area many under the age of one too young to be immunized. Jennifer simon is olivias mom. People say its a personal choice not to vaccinate, but its a personal choice with a lot of possibly catastrophic consequences for other people. Reporter california is one of 19 states that allows parents to refuse vaccinations based on their personal beliefs. A recent study shows many of these parents live in affluent neighborhoods. Kaiser permanente analyzed medical records of more than 150,000 children in northern california. They found five clusters of underimmunization, mostly in the San Francisco bay area. About two out of ten kids in these clusters either refused immunizations or were underimmunized. Dr. Tracy lieu is a researcher at kaiser. Some of the clusters were in places that you wouldnt necessarily have predicted. It tends to include a group of highly educated parents who have many questions about vaccines. Reporter with one more week of quarantine, Jennifer Simon hopes her daughter would be okay. Weve been lucky she hasnt contracted measles. And so its been an inconvenience, but its not been a tragedy. I dont want it to be a tragedy for anybody else. Reporter parents who refuse vaccines often do so because they fear rare side effects of vaccine, but california is now trying to make it harder for parents to get those personal belief waivers. Scott, most parents now have to have a doctors signature saying theyve been made aware of the risks of not vaccinating their kids. Pelley ben tracy in the los angeles newsroom. Ben, thank you.
