World in 90 seconds. Welcome to the beginning of the end of obamacare. House republicans claim victory on health care. House republicausns jt launched this giant stink bomb into the United States senate. Theyve been whining for seven years about the Affordable Care act. Now let them defend what they did today. Were seeing the individual exchange under obamacare impl e implode. If we do nothing, people will lose their health care. I want to thank the president of the United States for his steadfast leadership. How am i doing . Am i doingay ok . Im president. Hey, im president. Can you believe it . Right. I dont know. A storm that caused historic flooding in the central United States is now moving east. Theyll be in savannah, georgia, to confirm whether this was a roller coaster fear in oklahoma city. Why doesnt it everet g stuck near the bottom. They pulled a man from a burning townhouse in las vegas. All that he goes after it. Its an all out scrum here at verizon center. The sheep being constantly bullied by the cat. You dont mess with the sheep. And all that matters they have universalea hlth care. I know. I thought you would wait a minute. Wait a minute, chris. The president has just said it. On cbs this morning. Remember, laughter is the best medicine until a jury convicted a woman for laughing at Jeff Sessions. We now live in a world where laughing at Jeff Sessions is a federal offense. So, please, do not laugh how much jeff writer mikes brandnew baby. Youre all going to jail. Announcer this mornings eye opener is presented by toyota. Lets go places. Welcome to cbs this morning. President trump and his republican allies are celebrating a capitol hill breakthrough. The house narrowly passed the gop plan to roll back obamacare, but it still needs a vote in the senate for democrats about to stop it, and republicans are ready to change it a the house vote is the president s first and an important victory in congress and he invited lawmakers to celebrate with him in the white house rose garden. Nancy cordes is on capitol hill with whats neck. Nancy, good morning. Good morning. This was a miraculous resurrection for a bill that was all but debt a month and a half its now headed to the senate to modify it. This is actually a great plan. I think it will get better. President trump celebrated his first legislative victory with the House Republicans who presented it. The bill has passed. The house bill they passed dismantled parts of obamacare and reworks others. We can put this collapsing law behind us, end this failed skpairmt. The gop plan is an experiment itself. It replaces obamacares insurance subsidies with more modest tax credits for low and midde income americans. It dramatically cuts medicaid funding and allows states to opt out of obamacare protections for people with preexisting conditions. Iowa republican do you feel confident . I feel very confident about it. We made sure that nobody can be denied coverage preexisting conditions. They cant be denied but they can be charge more if they let their coverage lapse. Theyll have to set up high risk pools to pay for the premiums. The high risk pools are a sham. Theyre not adequated will funded. Democrats argue that republicans would be punished at the ballot box. But you have every provision of this bill tattooed on your forehead. Youll glow in the dark on this one. When they passed, they sang this on the floor. The bill now goes to the senate where republicans say they wont rush it like the house did. The best government of good government. Lamar alexander is one of 12 republicans who will take the house bill and turn it into something the senate can accept. They will not get any help from senate democrats. We will make sure that trumpcare doesnt pass t senate and cant hurt the american people. It doesnt matter. Theyre going to try to use something in the senate called reconciliation which will allow them to pass the bill without any democratic support. Though, gayle, as we saw in house, getting their own members all on board can be a challenge. Thank you very much, nancy. President trump told John Dickerson on face the nation last week that his plan will protect people with preexisting conditions. They say it will make coverage completely unfordable for people. Forget about unaffordable. Whats unaffordable is obamacare, john. Im not hearing you say we have a clause that guarantees. Under the law bill states it can states can charge higher numbers. They can set up pools to hem people pay for insurance. The pools to be stuck in secondclass Health Care Coverage if theyre able to obtain coverage at all. Dan senor is with us. Welcome. Hi. So whats going to happen . He was in close contact with speaker ryan. Once it became clear the bill was going to pass, he already started to assemble a group who represented all the key committees across the political spectrum within the Political Party with Susan Collins on the left and mike lee on the right. They got it to work. If the House Republicans hope that the Senate Republicans are going to pick up where the House Republicans left off, i think that is not going to happen. I think theyre basically starting from scratch. I think in the end the senate bill will look a lot like the house bill but there are some big differences. I think the senate will pass somethind enormous pressure for the house to pass the senate version. Does the gop have momentum right now and how important is momentum . . Some are describing it as Trumps Mission Accomplished moment. Was mixed on that rose garden celebration, finale yesterday. But i will say when i talked to different members, particularly in the leadership, they said, look, we need to keep this momentum going. For seven years, republicans have been campaigning against the obamacare. It was the centrepiece for 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, theyve been telling the voters, were going to repeal obamacare. They want to keep telling our own members how do you want to look your voters the eye and say when we had the shot to do this, we didnt do that. With each step they think the pressure intensifies. Wace it passes the house, they passed the house. One step, one milestone passed. Its up to you, senate. Thats what yesterdays optics were about. Legislation isnt easy and you have to dole out favors get things passed. Theres a lot in the house bill even though many didnt read it. Of the 22 districts, 14 voed for this repeal and replace. Are they in danger in the Midterm Election . Its too early to tell. I make two points on this. One, what many of them say is, look, ive fwet to worry about democrats, independents rebelling against us here. But i also have to look at the moralizing voters. Our Republican Voters think were incompetent. We cant get anything done when we control the bran p. I think that is a big factor unknown. Dan senor, good to have you here. Happy Cinco De Mayo. Is that your holiday . No, no. But im a full service celebrator. After the event, President Trump flew to new york for his celebration. Protesters were there to greet him. The president came to new york to meet australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. They clashed on the telephone a few months ago. The first facetoface meeting with australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was also a chance to reset their relationship after a tense february phone call. We had a great call. You guys exaggerated that call. It was a big skpaj rate. We had a great call. Were not vaguists. President trump was angered to learn of an obama deal to take in more than 1,200 refugees from australi he called it dumb. Well honor the agreement. It doesnt mean we admire the agreement. Early thursday mr. Trump touted support. We will never, ever stand for religious discrimination, never, ever. But in march the federal court suspended the president s travel ban on six muslim majority nations, saying, quote, the purpose is to separate a religion. The president has chosen saudi arabia, two of the holiest sites as his first stop of his enaugust real foreign trip this month and then its on to israel. Hes responsible for over 11 million member Nonprofit Health care providers and the author of mistreated, why we think were Getting Good Health Care and were usually wrong. Dr. Pearl, good morning. Good morning. Nice to have you here. How do you see this bill out of the house of representatives . Its just the first step as charlie said. It as going to go to the senate where it has significant play. This has a long way to go before its the law of the land. Suppose the senate came to you and said youre involved in this bill, tell us what we need to do, whats not in this bill or should be . Preexisting coverage is key. We need to make sure we provide insurance for those who are the sickest in the nation. We have to make it affordable. If you cant get health care or pay the outofpocket premiums, youre not going to get that care. So finally it has to have adequate coverage. To the last part of it, itsot to be better organized. Excuse me. I think this is important because there are a number of americans who have preexisting conditions who are really worried. My understanding of this house bill is it would allow states to do a waive e. What does that mean for someone who has diabetes or cancer or heart surgery . We dont know yet because no one ees do ones done the waivers. We could have 50 different bills. Each state could handle it differently. It could be different in new york from new jersey and connecticut and california. There seem there could be a lot of coulds in this bill. At some point all of lus be patients. What sit saying we should be most worried about or concerned about . We have to make sure we maintain the coverage for all the people who have it today. You have to make sure you have coverage without having access so you can afford it. The opportunity for everyone to get the health care that they have today is crucial to maintain both of those with disease and all of us will this bill provide that . At this point i cant say because of all the provisions we dont know. Also the fact that the senate is going to be there. Whats interesting about this, even when they voted on it, they had not read the bill because they had not had a chance prepare the bill, correct . I dont know if they read the bill or not. The bill is still a work in progre progress. It will go to the committee where it will finally bedecided on. The president talking to the australian Prime Minister said they have a Better Health care system than we do. The question i have is who has the right Health Care System and which should we try to create . The most important thing and were not even talking about it yet is the care Delivery System. Most of these bills are about coverage. Whos going to pay, how much are they going to pay, whos going to get the ability to get the care. Whats key is the system. Care is great. If the physicians Work Together as one, of course, this it ee prepaid so its not dropping in volume. Its getting in value. People are focusing on unnecessary debt. People die every year in this country. Why . They die from a combination of prevention, my father died because of medical intervention. You cant get the convenient care. The care all three of you want to get in your travel, in your banking. Can you go online and make an appointment with your doctor . Can you email . No. You accept so much less. They say Older Americans will see higher premiums under this proposed bill. Is that true . Under the Affordable Care act, the maximum you can be charged on age three times the in the new bill its five times. Under the waivers, no one knows. What about mandating Preventive Care services . Thats the coverage piece. Absolutely. If we dont do the things in advance to prevent disease, then people are going to get sick and costs are going to rise over time. Over time when it exceeds our ability to play, every Insurance Plan will fail. Would you acknowledge this republican plan puts more power in the hands of insurers like you and out of the government . I think it puts more power under the states where its going be. This is moving from the federal one size fits all to the possibility of 50 different sizes coming out of this particular plan. Why is it so hard, dr. Pearl . So many want it to be inclusive. In one sense, why is it so hard . Because we have yet to make the Delivery System be a 21st century Delivery System. Its leftover from the past. Its like from the 1970s. Its fragmented, scattered around the town, piecemeal, 20th century technology, all the modern things that could be done, its not an American Health care today. Its got to change. Thank you for coming. Thank you, dr. Pearl. Thank you so much. Health care will be a big topic on sunday. John dickerson speaks with mick mulvaney, senator joe manchin and condoleezza rice. The mother of the suspect sat for an interview that was among the most painful things i ever had to watch as she was sort of resling with the notion that maybe her son was a killer. This is an hour full of emotion. Wow. And i think dr. Garcia had the motivation . It was a revenge story. Theyll need to break the marathon time by nearly three minutes. Dana jacobson with is here with a race to leech a milestone of human endurance. Fascinated by the story. Good morning. Yeah. Two hours, two minutes, and 57 seconds. Thats the fastest a human has every run a 26. 2mile maratho companies vying to break through that barrier. Neither would have gotten this close without help from science. The morning after a late spring snowstorm in boulder, colorado. Roger and his friend go for a daily run. But for this pair, running is more than just a hypo. Theyre scientists at the university of colorado and theyre trying to solve a very specific challenge, bring the world record marathon time below two hours. In a recently published study they found a few surprisingly le equipment could do the trick. First, if an elite runner wants to break the record, h has to choose a raese with the right course, one which also conforms to the rules of the sports governing body. If you had a course that had the mauks millimeter downhill, that saves about 30 seconds. Theys need to go downwil. If you can break the wind, ha would save 3 minutes according to our calculations. This idea of drafting in running which can obviously help, why dont we see it . Its like, all right, guys, if you can Work Together, you probably need some incentive to make that happen. Finally it all comes down to the shoe. If we make the shoe lighter by one gram, we save 100 in energy. How much time is that . For toplevel marathoners, saving 1 is one minute. It determines how much energy or spring the runner gets back with each stride. Two of the biggest name in the sport, asdida and nike have built brandnew shoes to break the new milestone. The two companies are taking new approaches. The new nike shoe is light, but night the lightest shoe but it has the best cushioning and energy return. The adidas shoe, they seem to have kept the same return, but maybe 100 gramming lighter. Theyre really light. Its ridiculous. The finding gave its shoe name. Vapor fly, 4 . I can feel the spring right away. It saves 4 of energy. So if a person was running a tenminute mile, thats 24b seconds per mile. Thats me. At the elite level if one had someone who could run a marathon many phenomenal time of two hours and four minutes, we think this shoe can take off enough time to get them under two. Whats the deal about a sub 2 marathon . This is a bit like a moonshot. What appeals to me is people saying, no, its upon. Id like to prove them wrong. Theyre studied two components. Its important to point out that the nooik promarathoners making this attempt already have elite personal best times that are within minute os the world record. Awesome. I need those energy feel whatever it is. If you run, you feel that. Thats good for norah to know. Nba legend Charles Barkley is in the show. Standing tall with a new effort to get us talking stronger is blasting without risking her bones. Its training her good cells. To fight the bad guys. Stronger is less pain. New hope. More fight. Its doing everything in your power. And everything in ours. Stronger, is changing even faster than they do. Because we dont just want your kids to grow up. We want them to grow up stronger. Sir Charles Barkley had a record in the nba for 16 seasons. s since become pop already analyst inside the nba. He has a new documentary series called race relations. Its called american race. In one he speaks with two. You know, we dont want anything different in life than you do. Are you sure about that . You just want what white people want h. Yes. Yes . I want a good family, i want a good job, i want my daughter living in a world where she doesnt have to worry about discrimination. Thats all we want. Charles barkley joins us. Good morning. Good morning. Thanks for having me. Is this early to have you . Yes. Im not a morning person. Glad to have you here. Theres nothing you can do in the morning that you cant do later in the day. Thats not true, charles. Sometimes something good doesnt happen until after 10 00. Just fine. Lets talk about the series. Yes. Its an important series and youre engaged by this, you seem. It was the hardest thing ive every done in my life, meading with these families. Obviously Richard Spencer meeting with mothers whose kids had been killed by police. This was a very difficult conversation you have. Race is so tricky and so difficult to talk about because nobody wants to talk about race, charles. Im so glad youre doing it. We never talk about race until something bad happens and then everyone is mad. I want to sit around, do they have a point, do he have a point, do she have a point . Everybody is so afraid. They got mad at you in baltimore. It seemed like you were defending the plen. No worry about that. First of all, we need police, especially in the blang community. That doesnt mean they mace mke mistakes and do something wrong. It was a painful night. We could see that. I felt when it was over, i bet you that lady never had the opportunity to express what she held to the news media. She was angry at me and thater son got killed. And you point out communities. Ive gotten in trouble too. Black people, we need to do better ougs. We cant treat each other with disrespect and then call the coins. What did you learn . I learned theres amazing people out there. I met with a pastor in atlanta who works with undocumented kids. Those people are amailing working all time. He start and after School Program where these kids go. Those people are interesting and powerle but how did you learn the take the right step forward . Number one, the only thing you can do is talk about it. I wanted to put the voice to a face. The mother and father who lost a son in baltimore, i wanted more than 25 seconds. We throw those words around. We talk about police brutality, but we dont ever see it. We talk about undocumented immigrants but we dont know any of them. Youre showing a human story yes. Did that ever happen to yo . Did you experience thiengs leak that why youre on the court. Snow e was more disappointed in the people around people saying the race iftd stuck because out of human decency. If someone says s someone whos jewish or whatever, im going to say something. The witnesses sitting there letting people scream slurs at adam, they should have screened or policed that better. Good to cow good to see you.
