Trial set for three prison guards charged after fatal assaul

MOUNT STERLING — A date has been set for the jury trial of three former Western Illinois Correctional Center corrections officers facing federal charges stemming from a 2018 assault that resulted in a prisoner’s death.
Former corrections officers Todd Sheffler of Mendon, Willie Hedden of Mount Sterling and Alex Banta of Quincy will go on trial April 6. They will appear at a status hearing online March 9, according to Sharon Paul, public information officer for the U.S Attorney’s Office Central Illinois District.
