There is always a bit of drama around the St Emilion classification, which is revised every decade or so. But the news this week that two of the best-known Bordeaux châteaux have withdrawn from it altogether made headlines beyond the specialist wine press.
Ch. Ausone and Ch. Cheval Blanc were the only two château considered worthy of a place at the very pinnacle of the St Emilion classification system when it was first drawn up in the 1950s. They have remained in that lofty position ever since, through four revisions of the classification, not joined by any other properties until 2012 when Ch. Angélus and Ch. Pavie were both promoted to share “Premiers Grand Cru Classés A” (yes, I agree, it’s a mouthful, more on that later) status with them.
