Myoung Ypma, 47, and his wife Marianna, 48, met on a Sydney street in 1997. After a stint teaching English in South Korea, they moved to southern NSW and bought a bookshop, where they sought shelter during last summer’s bushfires.

MARIANNA: I’d just graduated from uni [with a bachelor of science] and I lost my dog. A girlfriend and I were driving around inner Sydney looking for her, and my friend suddenly said, “Oh, there’s Myoung and Matt, they can help look.” Myoung had long, black hair, right down to his butt. He seemed very quiet and chilled out, but also smart and interesting.
