VARDAMAN ⢠A 7-year-old girl was killed and her 5-year-old brother seriously injured when they were struck by an 18-wheeler just after they got off the school bus Wednesday afternoon. The driver of the lumber truck was arrested and charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault. He is being held in the Calhoun County Jail in Pittsboro. Calhoun County Coroner Salena Westmoreland said Valeria Montero, 7, of Vardaman, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her brother suffered a broken hip and a broken femur and was airlifted to the Le Bonheur Childrenâs Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. He was scheduled to have surgery on Thursday, and his current condition is not known.
