The Virginia High School League has backtracked on last weekâs announcement that student-athletes in certain sports would be required to wear masks at all times during games and practices as a way to limit the spread of COVID-19. Mondayâs rescission came just four days after the VHSL noted in a news release Thursday night that the Virginia Department of Health âstrongly advises athletes to wear masks at all times during group training, competition, and on the sidelinesâ during periods of âsubstantial COVID-19 activityâ and that it was ârequiringâ schools to follow the recommendations of the VDH and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Last weekâs news release, which came hours after Gov. Ralph Northam issued tighter statewide restrictions in response to growing virus numbers, also stated that if mask wearing makes participation difficult, âit is advisable not to participate in sports at this time.â
