VHSL quickly rescinds mask requirements for athletes

The Virginia High School League has backtracked on last week’s announcement that student-athletes in certain sports would be required to wear masks at all times during games and practices as a way to limit the spread of COVID-19.
Monday’s rescission came just four days after the VHSL noted in a news release Thursday night that the Virginia Department of Health “strongly advises athletes to wear masks at all times during group training, competition, and on the sidelines” during periods of “substantial COVID-19 activity” and that it was “requiring” schools to follow the recommendations of the VDH and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Last week’s news release, which came hours after Gov. Ralph Northam issued tighter statewide restrictions in response to growing virus numbers, also stated that if mask wearing makes participation difficult, “it is advisable not to participate in sports at this time.”
