Updated: 7:18 PM CDT Jul 2, 2021 KOCO Staff Residents of the Village are upset about what lies beneath their streets and what has been coming to the surface after a week of rain.It stinks, they say.Today, the city said they’re working to solve unsanitary drainage issues.Video posted to Facebook shows water gushing out of a manhole after days of heavy rain.“So when you have a long period of rain when the ground is saturated and then you have a big downburst of additional water, then these sewer lines can get full of water and they get pressurized,” the Village City Manager Bruce Stone said. This can lead to several problems, including what residents describe as an awful odor.Plus, the state says the water can be dangerous.“We certainly would discourage people getting in that water, you know, sometimes kids like to play in floodwater. We definitely discourage kids not to do that -- that can be a health issue, but also just a safety issue. You don’t want anyone in running, rushing floodwater,” said Department of Environmental Quality spokeswoman Erin Hatfield. The city has a million-dollar project to fix the problem and is looking for funding to do even more."And then it's also possible for other bond issues down the road to take it to the voters to, to ask for their approval to incur additional indebtedness to tackle some of these large infrastructure projects,” Sone said.If you experience any manholes bursting due to floodwaters near you, be sure to call the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality to report the issue.
