Wakefield, Massachusetts, votes in support of controversial Native American logo Share Updated: 11:27 PM EDT Apr 27, 2021 WCVB Share Updated: 11:27 PM EDT Apr 27, 2021 Voters in a suburban Massachusetts town voted Tuesday in support of a controversial Native American mascot logo that a school committee previously voted to eliminate. Wakefield Memorial High School’s Native American Warrior logo morphed from a school committee discussion last month into a full-fledged political campaign. The vote indicated 55% of residents favored keeping the logo while 45% felt it should be changed. The ballot question, which occurred about a month after the town's school committee voted to eliminate the school’s Native American logo but keep the warrior name, is nonbinding. Quincy, Barnstable and several other communities have eliminated Native American mascots, logos or nicknames in the last year.
