with new details. Reporter people have been coming here around the clock to check up on that officer. The dad has been here since about 10 00 last night and basically hasnt left his bedside since then. For everybody involved here, a big sigh of relief tonight. Crying. Just crying, and i couldnt calm myself down. Reporter it wasinari nearly minutes of terror for the family. His aunt tells nbc 10 it was an agonizing wait before finding out the fate of the cop. I feel my heart beating like this. Reporter keith james was first on scene after finding out the 21yearold had been shot in the leg during a struggle with this 19yearold. Even though he was shot he was still able to get the gun away. He radioed for help and called for a tourniquet for his leg. Everything was so fast. We had him out of there within three or four minutes. Probably faster than that. Reporter chelsea coil couldnt believe it when investigators said his gun jammed when he tried shooting her cousin again in the face. I heard he tried to shoot him in the face, and i my jaw just dropped. You cant deny that he tried to kill him. Reporter of course his family tonight wants to thank all of the officers that came to his aide. Were told he possibly could leave the hospital as early as tomorrow. Also one more note. hit a tree setting his car on fire. First responders had extinguishers with plastic handles. They didnt work, roscoe died. The government said it wasnt an isolated issue. 16 people got hurt amidst hundreds of reports of clogged or detached handles. takes us to the last line of defense, the trauma unit where gunshot victims are saved. At the hospital in center city, saving the life of a gunshot victim begins outside the emergency room itself. A man so critically injured he was rushed to the hospital by police. Its a team effort in phillies changing battle against gun violence. The weapons that are used these days are not the same weapons that were used in the civilian world ten years ago. Hes the medical director of trauma and the conductor of a medical symphony that we got to watch behind the scenes. The

started on the scanners. Person with a gun. A male, reported a male shot. Reporter and it was a headline on nbc 10. But in the meantime at the hospital an alert goes out overhead and the trauma team rushes together from across the hospital. Smocks, gloves and masks. By the time the patient is in the trauma bay this symphony doesnt miss a beat. You dont see a bullet anywhere. Reporter even in the cases where they know the victims life may never be the same. A lot of times you know, and youre trying to keep them calm before you break the news. Reporter last year they treated 80 gun victims. By midoctober of this year it had already cared for 58, more than the fouryear total for 2014 and 2015. Hawnmans increases are reflected in citywide data. Police records showing homicides kicking up in recent years off their 2013 lows. The homicide count was 12 persh higher than it was at the same time last year. Those same records indicate that eight out of every ten homicides are committed with a gun. For many here the urgency of a nights work and sometimes the second guessing doesnt hit until after their shift. Crime i me personally i dont do that until im home.
