Reporter the new york closed. Its very, very difficult to get through that area. This summer friday has been aggravated by a dreadful accident 15 miles north. This morning, this is suffern new york this morning. A box truck carrying mattresses jumped the Center Divider and hit a tractor of exit 15b. The two occupants of the northbound box truck are dead. The driver of the southbound tractortrailer is hospitalized. Serious but stable condition. And traffic as a result all afternoon has been really slammed on the thruway, i87, route 17, route 202, the local roads in Rockland County and its just been really a mess. Its just starting to loosen up a little bit but its still very difficult. The monitors say its difficult in the immediate area. Police are questioning two other vehicles involved in the crash. Another truck headed northbound and a private vehicle. They are trying to find out what happened before the box truck jumped the median. But two people were killed. The tractortrailer driver survived. Live in tarrytown, lou young, cbs 2 news. Now to a decision from new jerseys highest court that may surprise some people. Leaving your children alone in a car is not necessarily a crime. Last month cameras captured police breaking a window to rescue a child from a hot consider while the mother was shopping. The child is okay. On average, 38 children die each year in hot car deaths. And while this mom is facing charges, in some instances, parents who leave their children alone while they shop might not. Cbs 2s Jessica Schneider explains. Reporter up until this week it was a cut and dried issue. If leave your kid in the car no matter how long or how hot or cold it is, you will be arrested. But now the new Jersey Supreme Court says there may be circumstances where it is acceptable. Is there ever an excuse to leave your kid in the car . Im sure there is. Im sure there is. Theres always circumstances. Reporter is there ever an excuse where parents say i had a momentary lapse, i made a no. No. Im a mother of four. Four kids. Reporter parents at odds about whether its ever okay to leave your kid in the car while you go into a store. Accidents are accidents and theres no excuse for that. Never be left . Nope. Reporter one new jersey mother has been locked in a sixyear court battle because she left her 19monthold daughter in the car while she ran into this Dollar Tree Store in South Plainfield for 5 minutes. The car was running locked and climate controlled. But that was no excuse until now. It was good weather. It was a sleeping child in the back seat of a locked door, the car was right in front of the store where she went. She never said it was i Good Parenting decision. The question is a oneoff aberration should that be viewed as child abuse . Reporter he represented the mother in court. She remains anonymous. The mother was in the states registry as a child abuser. But now she has the chance to wipe her record clean. New jerseys Supreme Court ruling in this opinion, whether a parents conduct is negligent or grossly negligent requires an evaluation of the totality of the circumstances through a hearing. The mother will plead her case excuse holds weight and many parents say it doesnt. Be given the chance to tell her story to the judge . No, absolutely not. Reporter it is still a long process for that woman to clear her name. She has to go through a hearing with a judge who will make the final decision if that child abuse label should be erased or remain. A Long Island High School Football Player is in Critical Condition after getting sick on a field during practice. Doctors say the 16yearold now faces weeks in the hospital because of heat stroke. Cbs 2s Carolyn Gusoff reports now from suffolk county. Reporter nick collapsed monday on riverhead high schools football field practicing outdoors for three hours. Temperatures in the 80s the humidity oppressive. Rushed to the hospital, his body temperature 108 degrees he was on a mechanical ventilator by the time he got to us. Disoriented. Reporter his condition worsened. His kidneys and liver shut down signs of heat stroke. His family at stony brook Childrens Hospital thanked teammates for support and asked for privacy as he remains gravely ill. Near his school, parents say they worry about their kids in the heat. Timeout to cool down for a few minutes and have water breaks. Thats scary because you think its not that bad but it is. Reporter doctors say heat stroke can happenner faster than many realize. The team doctor says the key for athletes in the heat is hydrating continually. Make sure they are drinking around the clock to stay ahead of the problem. If they get on to a field and they are dehydrated, its too late. Reporter he recommends monitoring your childs body weight before and after practice. The loss of a few pounds is a sign of dehydration. Drinks, fruit or salt. Avoid Energy Drinks packed with caffeine which worsen and players must recognize warning signs thirst, headaches, dizziness and the absence of sweating. Even if you are not thirsty to continue to drink. Reporter Riverhead School Officials Say they practice under a selfimposed modified heat alert monday working out in t shirts and shorts are frequent water breaks. Nicholas prognosis is unclear. He showed promising signed of improvement today according to the doctor but damage to his kidneys may be permanent. In stony brook, long island, Carolyn Gusoff, cbs 2 news schools on long island must suspend play if the heat index reaches 95 degrees. On monday, it was 92. School officials are scrambling to find a place for 4,000 students after an explosion rocked a bronx school complex. Last nights blast caused significant damage to the jfk High School Complex in marble hill. Three contractors doing work on the 6th floor were hurt. Mayor de blasio says the explosion happened when one worker lit a match to test a gas line. Police are searching for a woman with an apparent case of subway rage. Investigators say this woman pushed scratched and then bit a fellow subway rider who tried to sit in a seat that had her bag on it. It happened last week on a manhattanbound f train. The police say the attacker took off when the train stopped at 291st street and queensbridge station. The 45yearold victim was treated at mount sinai hospital. Cbs 2 demands answers and gets action. Earlier this week we showed you long island rail road trains jammed with passengers many sitting on the floor. Our exclusive video exposed the overcrowded conditions on the lirr express train headed hamptons. That prompted change. Cbs 2s alice gainer reports on todays ride out of penn station. Reporter here at penn station just before the 4 06 cannonball to the hamptons in montauk and things are actually very orderly. Theres things on the seat that tell you to put your bag up to allow space for people. Reporter flyers warn passengers against luggage blocking doors and aisles and also urge riders to leave oversized luggage at home. Did you use smaller luggage today . No. I have a lot of stuff. Reporter those with bigger bags will need to store them under seats. We hopped on to see that people were so far abiding by that with just a couple of people standing near the exits. As promised, extra staff was on hand to combat overcrowding. After cbs 2 first exposed the cramped conditions on the train, people sitting on the floors and in aisles, not to mention big bags everywhere blocking exits. Four days after our exclusive investigation, the lirr issued a crackdown. So this afternoon, all seemed good and well. But predictions for the same on the sunday ride home . Crazy time. Its the cannonball train and nobody takes it. I hope so. Its always really crowded. Some changes coming to a Westchester County jail after 13 inmates got sick last month by synthetic marijuana that was smuggled in. County leaders are saying september 14th a number of visitors who can see an inmate will be limited from 4 to 2. And the amount of contact between inmates and visitors will also be limited to a brief hug and kiss at the visits. Some people say this is is this really necessary . The answer is absolutely yes. You know, the overdoses that happened in july some were lifethreatening. And it unfortunately reflects a growing trend of arrests that we have made at the jail in connection with visitors attempting to smuggle drugs and other contraband in. Around 5 20 this evening a man walked into the federal shot a Security Guard. He then turned the gun on himself and is dead. Police believe the gunman was a veteran. The Security Guard that he shot went into cardiac arrest on the way to Lenox Hill Health plex. We have crews at the hospital and also at the scene waiting for the latest information. Well bring you updates as we get them. A commuter alert for the George Washington bridge. Beginning on monday, the lower level eastbound lanes heading into the city will close overnight. The lanes will close from 9 p. M. To 5 a. M. During the week and from 11 p. M. Until 8 a. M. Saturday. The Port Authority says workers will remove temporary construction platforms used for work on the upper level. Now on to some better news. New jersey family finds more than three bears right in their backyard. Take a look at this video. The basso family in Rockaway Township shot this video, no fooling here, its a mama bear and her five cubs all deciding that they needed to cool off in the family pool. The bears spent several minutes splashing around even playing with floats and on the slide. The bears took the pair of floaties with them when they left. Guess, um, those floaties were just right. Get it . [ laughter ] well. [ laughter ] yes. Exactly the right floatie. I love the bear trying to get on the swing. We didnt have the audio up but the kids were not happy that their toys were being ruined. I bet not. Whoo well, still an interesting sight one they will never forget hopefully never see again if the backyard. Cooler for the bears today . Much more comfortable for all of us. Well, for most of us today. With the humidity levels dropping off significantly. Well take you live outside right now to show you how pretty it is. Hurricane danny is the first hurricane of the 2015 atlantic hurricane season. Now its the first major hurricane winds at 115 Miles Per Hour right now making it a category 3 storm. Its moving westnorthwest at 10 Miles Per Hour. This is the strongest, danny is anticipated to be from here on out as it continues to the caribbean. Its expected to weaken. Another check here south of bermuda by about 200 miles, all this mess, this has about a 20 chance of becoming tropical over the next 48 hours. So obviously something well be watching closely. Rough seas over the next several days. We have a front moving through here taking its time so showers have been falling across the east end of long island throughout the afternoon, the trend will continue across the twin forks for the next few hours or so but behind it here, this dry air in place will make for a lovely evening and a beautiful beginning to your weekend. So heres what it looks like hour by hour. 11 00 tonight, possibly still a few showers on the far eastern end of long island. Some clouds lingering still, as well. Overnight clouds mainly east of the city west of the city mostly clear skies. As we go throughout the day tomorrow notice we have a few clouds around but overall its a lovely start to the weekend with the exception of the east end of long island where a few showers are possible. As we get into the day on sunday, watch what happens. The storm system that just moved through gets moved back toward us. Clouds will thicken from east to west and the showers also start spreading more westerly here. So by sunday morning, showers possible for everybody. And by afternoon that trend does continue. So saturday certainly looking like the better half of your weekend. Sunday not a washout though. As we look at your mountain forecast saturday should be okay. Quite lovely with low humidity still upper 70s low 80s. Sunday though we have a rain chance in the mountains. And really for everybody. Now, your extended forecast, tonight looking pretty good. 86 degrees. Tomorrow lots of sunshine for the city and points west. East more clouds with a chance of showers for the far end of long island. Sunday 84. Increasing humidity better chance for rain. Monday afternoon good 87. Tuesday through friday, High Pressure sits in. Dry air is in place. And temperatures are in the 80s with lots of sun. Thank you. Pope francis might add a central park stop to his itinerary when he comes to the city next month. Police commissioner bill bratton says details are still being worked out. Already the pope has several planned stops including mass at Madison Square garden and tickets are needed for that event making it much more controlled. This pope has made it quite clear that, um, he is going to participate with the crowds in a very different way. Were going to have to adjust to a pope that wants to have a lot more opportunity to mix with the faithful. The Police Commissioner says they are working on a plan with Homeland Security and the secret service that accommodates the pope as wishes. But also, keeps him as safe as possible. The jets are getting ready for tonights preseason game and Steve Overmyer has more. Reporter Otis Livingston is live at Metlife Stadium so we are going to be checking in with him and he sat down with jets coach todd bowles and asked him if geno smith should get the starting job when he comes back. He certainly has been tested already after very encouraging off season the last few weeks filled with turmoil topped off with geno smith with his jaw broken by his teammate. I sat down with the man in charge and asked him what chance geno smith has the chances of winning his starting job back when he returns. Last week we said its not a guarantee he is not going to get his job back. That surprised some people because usually the mantra is you dont lose your position if you get hurt. If we are 4, 5, 6, 7 and 0, im keeping ryan in there. If were over 4 or 5, geno may get his spot. In any sport you cant tell me barring this guy being Lebron James Type of playing if the ship is going right why are you going to rock it .
