The Oklahoma State Board of Education will oversee all school board operations of Western Heights Public Schools after the district was placed on a 90-day probation that ended last week.Board members said Western Heights Public Schools repeatedly failed to address the issues, like mismanagement and poor performance, that put it on probation in the first place. The state is taking action with the hopes the district will be put back on track."We are disgusted at what has transpired in the two short years," a parent said during Monday's Oklahoma State Board of Education meeting.Western Heights Public Schools officials failed to show up to answer whether they've corrected a list of complaints that led to their probation. The general counsel wanted to amend conditions of accreditation with probation. The conditions included the state overseeing the district's operations for a year, implementing an improvement plan, designating state and community leaders and teams to oversee performance, appointing an interim superintendent and engaging with law enforcement if needed. The board voted unanimously to move forward with the measure, which brought some district parents and former staffers to tears."Finally, intervene in a situation that has only gotten worse over time," Amy Boone said."I am so happy with today's decision. Tears of joy. And it’s been a long journey that we’ve all been waiting for," Kieyohnna Owens said.Parents, staffers and school board members believe this could be the oversight and intervention that could turn things around for Western Heights Public Schools. The state said Western Heights Public Schools has such disregard for the probation that instead of addressing the issues, the district filed a lawsuit against the state but failed to retain staff or focus on learning loss. The general counsel also said the district board did not follow through on actions against Barnes after the state board suspended his education certification last month. Instead, the district board extended his contract and gave him a $25,000 performance bonus. The interim superintendent could be appointed later this week.
