More Related Stories Related Podcast The Ngarimu VC and the 28th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarships are a Gardiner-Parata family affair this year, with Rakaitemania Parata-Gardiner being one of the six scholarship recipients and her father Sir Wira Harawira Gardiner being given the Manakura Award for leadership. It’s the first time the Manakura Award has been presented since 2018 and comes with a cheque for $30,000. Ms Gardiner-Parata is studying law at the University of Waikato. Undergraduate scholarships also went to Isaac Smiler, who is studying medicine and surgery at the University of Otago, and Kirihautu Durie-Ngata who is studying towards a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Accounting and Māori and Indigenous Studies at the University of Waikato.
