Geoff Hurst scoring in the 1966 World Cup Final Here's a nostalgic glimpse at what 1966 Weymouth was like. In the year that England won the World Cup, unfortunately it wasn't just good news that dominated in the seaside resort. The Dorset Evening Echo's front page was dominated by the news that 100 workers walked out of the Vickers engineering factory in Wyke Regis after two men had been suspended. The men were suspended for three days, according to the paper, because they had refused to co-operate in helping with the transfer to South Marston, near Swindon. Workers had previously stated they would not co-operate with the move until the firm had offered reasonable severance payments to people who would be made redundant.
