The Kinnard diary farm operates efficiently, staging cows in long barns with a sleeping area made of a recyclable sand mixture for comfort and stability, a feeding area on one side ( a truck drives through unloading one side at a time). Waste is collected in the center and dispersed to other farm lands throughout a 31 mile area. The farm milks over 6,000 dairy cattle through a CAFO (concentrated animal feeding operations). The practice has created a controversy: Their cow populations produce as much waste as major Wisconsin cities. The farm lies in a township with a high concentration of polluted wells. His massive operation is a polarizing force in the community. His expansion has been heavily litigated, and one legal issue in his case is now before the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Kinnard is making the case that he is a steward of the land, and in becoming so big, he is bringing ag professionals into a farming after years of rural kids leaving for jobs in the city. He employs 82 full-time employees - 25% have two or four-year degrees. The main cow barn of Kinnard's is about 1,800 feet long. There is row upon row of Holsteins which are milked three times a day. He milks 6,500 cows. He spreads manure on more than 11,000 acres of cropland than span fields dispersed over 31 miles. It's the fifth largest CAFO, or concentrated animal feeding operation.
