I was 18 when I walked into a bunch of banks and building societies clutching a handful of CVs and wearing a slightly ill-fitting suit. It was a tad on the baggy side, which I’m sure was typical for the time. I soon found myself working on the till in the Victoria branch of Nationwide, and before too long advising customers on their mortgages back at Moorgate. I was always a little baffled and disappointed that, as a mortgage adviser, I could advise on general insurance but not protection, and wondered how much influence I could have had on my customers’ protection arrangements.
