Widespread support is lacking to expand passenger rail in Ohio
Updated Feb 18, 2021;
Regarding the Feb. 13 Editorial Board Roundtable about the likelihood of Amtrak substantially increasing service in the Buckeye state (”Amtrak bringing new passenger rail service to Cleveland and Ohio?”), which was reprinted in “Mass Transit” magazine: As a 40-year resident of southwestern Ohio now living in New Hampshire, much as I support public transit, I feel Amtrak’s proposal is a nonstarter.
In the southwest corner of the state, Amtrak could make great strides in improving its service by making the Cardinal serving Cincinnati into a daily train, instead of a triweekly train. With the establishment of a daily Cardinal, it could institute stops in Hamilton (population 62,000) and at Oxford (Miami University, enrollment 20,000).
