Will a Congress-AIUDF alliance end up helping the BJP?

In the second week of January, when the Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) announced a pre-poll alliance for the Assam assembly election scheduled for April, there was jubilation among the Opposition parties in the state. The ruling BJP had reasons to worry for, on paper, the alliance, which includes the Left parties and the newly formed Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM), could seal at least 46 seats in their favour. This is because Assam has a 35 per cent Muslim population, according to the 2011 Census (unofficial estimates put this figure at over 40 per cent), and the AIUDF is a party formed in 2005 to protect the interest of Muslims of immigrant origin (who are often alleged to be illegal infiltrators from Bangladesh). The Congress too, in the past, has banked on the votes of Bangla-speaking Muslims in Assam. A division of Muslim votes has benefitted the alliance of BJP and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) in the multiple elections since 2014.
