How BJP ducked CAA and retained Assam

Ruling Bharatiya Janata Party created history in the north eastern Indian state of Assam by becoming the first non-Congress party to win two successive terms in the state assembly elections there.
Staving off a spirited fightback from its main challenger Congress, the saffron party, along with its regional allies like Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), won 75 out of the total 126 seats, 11 less than the previous assembly elections five years ago. The Congress-led 10-party alliance including All India United Democratic Front (AIDUF) of perfume baron Badruddin Ajmal, finished runners up with a total of 50 seats this time. The Congress-led United Progressive Alliance, which did not have AIDUF in it in 2016 but had Left parties, got 26 seats in the 2016 poll. ....

An exhaustive study of Muslims in Assam

There are some books that immediately grab your attention by dint of their titles. Indian journalist Zafri Mudasser Nofil s
The Identity Quotient: The Story of the Assamese Muslims , published by Har-Anand Publications, New Delhi, is one such book. The publication of the 179-page book could not have possibly come at a more opportune time with fresh assembly elections in the north-eastern Indian state of Assam just a couple of months away, setting the stage for playing out of linguistic, ethnic and religious fault lines among the voters. In recent times, the contentious issues of National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) have heated up the political cauldron in Assam, especially for its 1.07 crore Muslim residents, who constitute 34.22 percent of the state s total population of 3.12 crore (as per the last census in 2011). ....

In the second week of January, when the Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) announced a pre-poll alliance for the Assam assembly election scheduled for April, there was jubilation among the Opposition parties in the state. The ruling BJP had reasons to worry for, on paper, the alliance, which includes the Left parties and the newly formed Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM), could seal at least 46 seats in their favour. This is because Assam has a 35 per cent Muslim population, according to the 2011 Census (unofficial estimates put this figure at over 40 per cent), and the AIUDF is a party formed in 2005 to protect the interest of Muslims of immigrant origin (who are often alleged to be illegal infiltrators from Bangladesh). The Congress too, in the past, has banked on the votes of Bangla-speaking Muslims in Assam. A division of Muslim votes ha ....
