As Lake Area Technical College continues to grow, officials provided an update on the five-year, $40 million capital campaign launched in 2019. At the time of the update, they didnât expect to receive a significant boost from one of the worldâs wealthiest people. On Wednesday, LATC announced the school, along with Mitchell Technical College, received monetary donations from philanthropist and novelist MacKenzie Scott. Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon owner Jeff Bezos, allocated the collegesâ donations as part of nearly $4.2 billion in charitable giving to 384 organizations. In a Medium blog post, Scott wrote she targeted the donations via a data-driven approach to support people suffering the financial effects brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Scott wrote that the donations will go toward a mix of short and long term initiatives including food banks as well as educational institutions that train people for skilled careers.
