Successful Super Bowl Ad. But now facing some backlash for what their ceo said about snacks for women. And good morning, america. Hope youre well this tuesday morning. A little controversy coming into the Super Bowl Ads after all. Yeah, it was somebody riding high after that. The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback nick foles, super bowl mvp celebrating his win at the disney parade of all places, of course, he even fist bumped mickey. Kind of a fist bump. Its flu season too so, you know, dont give mickey the flu, nick. Big paw. Quite a ride for him but well start with that wild ride on wall street. Americans closely watching this market after that recordbreaking drop and the closing bell rang on monday the dow jones was down 1175 points. Abcs chief Business CorrespondentRebecca Jarvis starts us off. Markets around the world reacting thats right. Good morning to all of you. Were seeing markets selling off around the globe overnight. This morning, the dow also poised to open lower but its been fluctuating a lot. If you look at this last month, the month of february stocks have wiped out over a trillion dollars in value in the span of a few days. In the last five days the dow down 8 and to put that into real terms if you had invested 1,000 in the market one week ago, today you would have closer to 920. You would have lost about 80 on that bet, michael. Oh, wow, seems like the economy is strong. What set this off . This is whats surprising. Things are improving and the Unemployment Rate is low. Wages, those are climbing at the fastest pace in eight years and thats part of the issue here. That has sparked fear. The improving economy has sparked fear after a decade of rock bottom Interest Rates the Federal Reserve will start hiking rates to prevent inflation and as those go up, loans get more expensive. People in businesses spend less. That can weigh on the overall economy and, remember, lets put this into context here. Stocks have been rising now for the last nine years, almost consistently over those last nine years up 160 . Pretty unusual to see such a dramatic climb for such an extended period of time and many on wall street have been saying at what point is the stock market going to better reflect whats happening in the real economy . If youre in the real economy youve been saying, why is the market up so much . I dont necessarily feel that the market should be up this much. Now were coming back down to that reality moment. As you both know, investors get nervous when they see numbers like this drop but h historically as you say it always corrects itself. When youre thinking about the long term here, the hardest thing to do is often the best, staying the course. Its a lot easier said than done but investing for the long term, starting young, giving yourself and your portfolio the time to recover, this is the thing that works for people over time and i want to put this into context. If you had pulled out at the bottom of the market during the Great Recession you would have lost a lot. If you would have stayed the course within three years you would have had all that back. After the great depression. Yes. Easier said than done sometimes. All right. Thank you both. George. Thank you, guys. Several new developments in the russia investigation and i want to bring in jon karl. The big headline, president s legal team now taking a stand against Robert Mueller advising the president against a wideranging interview with the special counsel. Reporter theres a lot of negotiation going on here. Mueller has made it clear he wants to talk to the president. His legal team is trying to negotiate to have simply a written q a and told the president it would be a bad idea to go into a fullrange interview with the special counsel, a very risky thing and, george, ive got to tell you, i have spoken to some of his outside advisers who say it would be a disas ter but believe ultimately he will not be able to avoid sitting down with the special counsel. Chris christie said he didnt think the president should testify either and were seeing steve bannon not appear before the House Intelligence Committee today. Reporter theres a lot of back and forth. He had been before thecommittee earlier and refused to answer any questions about his interactions with the president in the white house or during the transition. Now bannon is saying hes not going to come unless the terms of the interview can be worked out. But i can tell you this, george, bannon has told others that he knows that although he can play this game with the committee there is no way that he can avoid answering all questions with the special counsel. Executive privilege works with congress. It doesnt work when youre sitting down with the special counsel. Meantime, the controversy over that House Intelligence Committee memo dealing with the wiretapping of carter page continues. The democrats, they have now voted to release the democrats memo as well on the president s desk. Reporter it is. It was a unanimous vote. All the republican, all the democrats voted to release it. Now the president has five days to decide whether or not he wants to block it. Advisers tell me hes inclined to allow it to be released. Well see. Were joined by the man at the center of this memo controversy carter page. Thanks for joining us. You say this republican memo that was released shows the abuse of your civil rights was worse than you imagined. Why . It just there is no basis for it. If you think about our constitution, you know, due process rights, freedom of, you know, First Amendment rights, it was just shredded, the constitution. As you know you cant get a warrant like this unless they can demonstrate probable cause you were working as a Foreign Agent and you actually had been on the fbis radar for working for russia for several years, the target of a russian recruitment effort back in 2013, the fbi interviewed you about that, correct . It was a witness to a case that they were doing, so i was supporting the fbi. You gave documents to someone they charged with espionage. This is sort of spin. I was teaching a course down broadway here at nyu and i told them a couple of things about what i was talking about in my course and i gave them a couple of my notes from or the documents that i gave my students, so in terms of it sounds when you say giving documents to a quote unquote spy it does sound it sounds a lot worse than reality but thats reality. You also wrote just a couple months after that in september 2013 to an Academic Press reported by Time Magazine ive had the privilege to serve as an informal adviser to the staff of the kremlin. You were recruited at one point by a russian agent then you wrote yourself that you were ang informal adviser to the kremlin so that leads people to believe is he working with russia . Well, you know, first of all its the g20 summit was in st. Petersburg that year and were bringing people from around the world so a lot of people were from literally australia, uk these are your words. I served as an informal adviser to the staff of the kremlin. Youre advising the kremlin. There was a lot of people advising we were part of an informal group, you know, and meeting in geneva, paris and the new york stock exchange. The first meeting was in the new york stock exchange. You can understand how that would raise questions and lead to probable cause on the one hand. You say youre an adviser on the one hand then an adviser to donald trump. The probable cause based on all the evidence that keeps dripping out and now has been further substance yachted with the friday first memo is it was based on that dodgy dossier which was, you know, a political stunt which is unfortunate, which is false evidence, so if you talk about obstruction of justice, thats real the democrats have said it was not based just on that dossier but said there were other reasons and this was an application that was renewed at least three times by people who worked for President Trump as well by judges appointed by republican president s. Well, itll be interesting. I appreciate the New York Times putting in their request for the they want all the underlying documents. I hope they get it. What do you think that will show . I have no idea. What i have seen thus far is complete ridiculousness. The fact that the dossier and news report, the New York Times pitched this information by mr. Steele and they said, you know, no way. But youve been under surveillance from the court since 2016. Since that time have you ever spoken to donald trump . I never spoke with him since i never spoke with him any time in my life. You have never spoken to donald trump in your life. No. No email, no text, nothing like that. Never. Carter page, thanks very much. Thanks, george. Over to michael. Thank you, george. Now to that winter blast leading to massive pileups killing at least 13 people. It reveals the chaos on board as the train barreled onto the wrong track and Abcs Steve Osunsami has the latest. Everything is everywhere. We wrecked on a train. Reporter these were the calls from the train for someone to come help and to come fast. Theres babies on here bleeding out their heads. Its a lot of people are hurt. Reporter its just moments after an amtrak train on its way to miami crashed head on into a Freight Train sitting on the tracks in south carolina. Investigators say the train engineer realized the rail switch was set wrong sending his train to the track where the Freight Train was parked but by the time he put on the brakes it was already too late. That switch should have been lined so that that amtrak could have continued southbound as planned. Reporter amtrak says that csx was controlling the switches on that track manually and that late saturday or early sunday after they moved one of their Freight Trains from the main line, the switch was not flipped back. When amtrak 91 arrived, it too was shifted onto that same sidetrack and in less than 700 feet slammed into the parked Freight Train at more than 50 miles an hour. How many are injured .
