Work hard play hard work hard play hard work work relax harder with the real ginger taste of canada dry. On the daday that i found ou, everything kind of calmed down, that night is when i opened it. I think that hehe wrote the letr because if it did happen, he wanted me to have something. Through the years, ive asked a great deal of you. Therefore, it should surprise you little that i have another favor to ask. I ask that you live. He wanted me to, like, find a way to keep living my life, as difficult as that might be, and thats really the thing that i still come back to all the time. You guys ready to rock n roll . Stretch it out. Marie tillman took pats advice and, 7 1 2 years after his death, remarried. She now lives in chicago with her husband and their children. So, my son, mac his middle name is patrick. You know, when you have kids, you want to be able to teach them lessons and tell them stories about people that you think are worth telling stories about. And he certainly is one of them. He is a part of who i am. He is just, like, here with me always. After pat was killed, people started writing checks, and they just started sending them to the cardinals. And it wasnt very long before there was close to a million bucks sitting there. And its like, wait a second. [ laughs ] what do you do with a million bucks . You cant bring him back, right . You know, i cant explain to my sons where uncle pat is. I cant. We were able to channel that frustration and anger into doing something with the foundation. Pat tillmans family and friends started a foundation that bears his name and a Scholarship Program that captured his essence. We select servicemembers and spouses who have shown this commitment to service and are really looking to continue that service in some other way. Since the Scholarship Program started, we have now almost 500 scholars and have given over 14 million to that group of scholars. The reason were talking about him is because he lived, because this great man lived this incredible life. The foundation is trying to take part of that and continue that forward, and its embodied in these tillman scholars. Im currently working on my phd in clinical psychology. I plan to continue Cancer Research and work in a laboratory, working towards a cure. Being a tillman scholar means legacy alive, but it means that im empowered to make a difference. It really just meant a lot to be able to add to pats legacy. He had a life of serving others, and i want to take part of that, as well. He was a man of many things, and i just hope to emulate the qualities and the characteristics and the type of person that he was. For anyone to have their life have such an impact in peoples lives i mean, because of him, we have an organization that benefits so many people. Pats run started in 2005, and, you know, we had 2,500 people signed up the day before. And it was a megaphone and a boom box and a few balloons. And it has become i think its the states greatest day. Good morning. I want to thank everybody for coming out this morning. Its truly great to see everybody come out. Obviously, we can never forget what pat sacrificed for our country. So we want to really reflect on that today. Every year, over 28,000 people come from all over the country to tempe, arizona, to run 4. 2 miles for the foundation of the man who wore number 42 for arizona state. When you see kids 12 or 14 years old they cant run this race and not learn about pat tillman. They are going to ask a question, and someones got to answer the question of who pat tillman was. And when they do, the learning continues. It means a lot. I mean, he had so much influence on all these people. Little kids that might not even have met him he has influenced, and he has, you know, touched their hearts and he has just impacted so many people. All these people are here to support him. And people were like, hey, i really want to do pats run, but i live in new york. What can i do . So, lets just do it. Lets just have runs all around the country. It just reinforces and reinforces of why people are really doing pats run. Its pat. People are coming because of pat. Whether you knew pat, were a fan of pat, you were touched by his life, were very fortunate to have her here today, marie tillman. We are happy to be here, have the whole family out. Its been really amazing to see. Still, you know, 12 years later to see everyone coming out. The runs awesome. I mean, you know, its cool that thats gonna last forever. [ laughs ] cause hes not here, you know . If you were gonna retire, what would you want your coaches and teammates saying about you . Well, geez. Well, hopefully ill give them more to say. At this point, i havent been here too long. Passion is kind of an important word for me, whether its playing sports or whether its, you know, just living or whatever youre gonna do. In my opinion, you should be passionate about it, or else why do it . And thats, you know, kind of i dont want to be dramatic, but thats what id like. Kind of, yeah. The heart thing is kind of important to me. Whatever you were about to do just became whatever youre about to do after you get coffee. Nothing comes before coffee. Thats why were introducing a new line of cafequality espresso drinks from mccafe. Get a small peppermint mocha for just two dollars. This is fox 5 local news at 6 00. A Winter Weather alert.
