As we heat up this afternoon, well see scattered showers and thunderstorms redevelop by the afternoon and into the evening. So temperatures will be a little bit lower today in the upper 80s. You can see all lanes pretty much crawling for the most part. You can account for that by adding anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes to your commute time. Reporter we are live in colesville where firefighters are still trying to find the people who live here in this home on white drive. Theyve knocked out the bulk of the fire, as you can see, but there is significant damage. Its not clear if the homeowners are here or simply out of town. Firefighters have still not been able to get in contact with them. The fire broke out just around 3 45 this morning. Firefighters have been here all morning. When they first got here, they saw heavy flames shooting out of the roof and that caused the roof to collapse there in this home. There are about 75 firefighters that are here right now on the scene in the street. White drive is blocked off. Firefighters have just been working to search throughout the home and make sure that no one is home. If they are again still until accounted for. Happening today outside analysts take a closer look at the Police Response during the Baltimore City riots. Rioters looted and set businesses on fire just hours after freddie grays funeral. Jerome simmons from laurel is accused of assaulting a woman who was trying to complete her community service. Police say the 32yearold simmons was overseeing a work detail in rockville when he attacked a woman in a restroom. Detectives say simmons also told the woman if she had sex with him at a later date, he would sign off on documents showing she had completed her community service. The case is renewing the debate over immigration policies and how they pay have played a role in the case. Hannah daniels has more. Reporter juan pan cisco lopez Francisco Lopez sanchez sits behind bars accused of killing 32yearold Kathryn Steinle last week as she walked along the San Francisco pier with her father. A Law Enforcement official revealed tuesday the gun used in the crime belonged to a federal agent. An illegal immigrant Lopez Sanchez has been deported back to mexico five times since 1994 and has seven felony convictions. He was arrested two months ago on drug charges and then released from jail after prosecutors dropped the case despite a request from immigration and Customs Enforcement to hold him for a federal deportation hearing. In the wake of the shooting many lawmakers on capitol hill are questioning San Franciscos sanctuary policy, a policy that prevents Law Enforcement agencies from holding a person because of their immigration status. Lawmakers are calling on the Justice Department to investigate the former head of the agency that investigates chemical accidents. Theyre concerned where the former chairman made false statements during testimony before an oversight committee. He resigned as chairman of the chemical safe following accusations of mismanagement. Meanwhile the right to die bill in california is on the shelf after lawmakers decided not to present it at the Assembly Health Committee Meeting yesterday. Authors of the bill feared they didnt have the votes to get it through. The bill would have allowed doctors to prescribe lethal drugs to terminally ill patients to end their lives. Its a little known but heart attack is the leading cause of death for people younger than 40 who have type 1 diabetes. Theyre ten times more likely to suffer a heart attack. At med star georgetown theyre inviting volunteers to take part in a new study looking at the risk for heart attacks and strokes in children with type 1 diabetes and how best to treat them. Reporter robby murphy is a typical 13yearold excited to begin a busy funfilled summer. Were going on a cruise to the virgin islands, playing some golf. Reporter a normal kid with one difference. Robby has type 1 diabetes. He was diagnosed two years ago. Surprised. It doesnt run if our family at all. Reporter Something Else his mom kim never thought would be an issue right now was robbys possible increased risk for a stroke or heart attack. Approximately 25 of the adolescent population that have type 1 diabetes have already two cardiovascular risk factors, higher blood pressure, higher cholesterol, lower numbers of the good cholesterol. Reporter but only 1 of adolescent patients are on medication. A pediatric endocrinologist at med star georgetown says doctors are hesitant to prescribe cholesterol lowering medication like lipitor because there isnt clear evidence theyre safe or even effective in children. Robby is helping the doctor gather that evidence. Hes participating in a new type 1 diabetes study. The question is do we if we treat the children, do we actually make a difference . Do we prevent the progression of the disease . Reporter she needs 150 younger study volunteers. It helps for a good cause. Were trying to find a cure for this because its really not fun but hey, youve got to live with it and just try to get a cure for it. The trial is enrolling children both with and without diabetes who are not currently on cholesterol medication.
